Chapter Text
The warm glow of the bonfire illuminated the night sky as Pogues, Kooks and Tourons from across the island gathered at the boneyard, their laughter echoing across the deserted beach, beer flowing freely from the stolen keg.
The sound of crashing waves provided the perfect backdrop to their impromptu party, one of the first since school let out. JJ Maybank, at just seventeen, was riding the wave of summer freedom in the Outer Banks, his carefree spirit mingling with the salty air and endless possibilities.
Amidst the flickering flames, JJ's gaze locked onto a figure standing by the edge of the bonfire light, her blonde hair catching the radiance of the sun setting beyond the horizon of the sea, her blue eyes sparkling with intrigue. Something about her drew him in, like a moth to a flame, igniting a spark of curiosity.
"Hey, try not to drool," Kiara teased, her laughter ringing out as she caught JJ's wide-eyed stare.
"I'm not drooling," JJ retorted with a smirk. "I'm just admiring from afar, Kie. Do you know her?"
Curious, Kie followed his gaze, spotting the blonde figure across the beach.
"Touron," she informed him, recalling the recent encounter. "She came into the Wreck earlier this week. I waited on her and her parents for dinner."
A mischievous grin spread across JJ's lips as he turned back to Kie. "Chum for the sharks," he remarked playfully, before grabbing another drink from the keg beside them and striding purposefully across the beach towards the girl.
"Hey," JJ called out, flashing her an easy grin as he approached, introducing himself and offering her the full cup. "JJ Maybank. What's your name?"
She returned his smile, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "I'm Emily—Emily Jones. Nice to meet you, JJ."
"You're not from around here, are you?" JJ asked, already knowing the answer.
"I'm from right outside of Wilmington," she replied. "I'm just here on vacation with my parents. We leave on Sunday."
"Well, I guess we'll just have to make the most of the rest of your time on our humble little island," JJ quipped, his charm in full force.
As the night wore on, JJ and Emily found themselves engrossed in conversation, their laughter blending with the rhythmic crash of the waves. Time seemed to stand still as they shared stories by the fire, their connection deepening with each passing moment.
"Wanna get out of here," JJ suggested finally, his voice low and husky as he leaned in closer to Emily. "I know a place we can go."
Without hesitation, Emily nodded, her heart racing with anticipation as JJ took her hand and led her away from the bonfire and into the darkness beyond.
Hours later, as the first light of dawn painted the sky in hues of pink and gold, JJ and Emily lay entwined in the sheets in the room at the Chateau that JJ had claimed as his own, their bodies pressed together in the aftermath of passion.
As they lay in JJ's bed, the warmth of their bodies mingling in the dimly lit room, Emily broke the silence with a soft sigh.
"I should probably head back to the rental house," she murmured, her voice tinged with regret. "My parents are probably worried about me."
JJ forced a smile, "I had a really good time," he admitted, his voice sincere. "It's a shame you have to go."
They shared one last kiss, the bittersweet taste of farewell lingering on their lips, before Emily reluctantly pulled away.
"Here, let's exchange phone numbers," she suggested, pulling out her phone. "Maybe we can keep in touch?"
JJ nodded, accepting her offer with a faint smile, though secretly he had no intention of calling her, he never did. He entered his number into her phone, his fingers moving mechanically as he forced himself to play along.
As Emily gathered her things and prepared to leave, JJ watched her go, a pang of regret tugging at his heart. But as the door closed behind her, he pushed aside his feelings, burying them deep within as he turned his attention back to the empty room before him.
Little did he know that their connection was just the beginning of an unforgettable journey.
…..
As the days melted into weeks and the summer sun beat down relentlessly on Kildare, JJ threw himself into the familiar rhythm of island life. He worked long hours at the marina, days off casting his line into the blue waters in search of the day's catch on the dock. Evenings were spent with his fellow Pogues, chasing adventure and mischief under the island sky.
Eventually, the days stretched into weeks and the weeks into months, and the memory of JJ's night with Emily gradually faded into the background of his busy life. The carefree days of summer melted into the structured routine of school-filled fall days, where JJ juggled senior year with his part-time job, waiting tables after school to make ends meet.
Late-night adventures with the Pogues remained a constant amidst the changing seasons, providing moments of respite from the demands of everyday life. Together, they navigated the challenges with laughter, loyalty, and unwavering friendship.
As the air turned cold, heralding the arrival of the holiday season, JJ found peace in the warmth of his friendship with the Pogues and the sanctuary of the Chateau. Together, they celebrated the holidays with a sense of camaraderie that transcended mere friendship.
But amidst the joyous festivities, JJ's 18th birthday loomed on the horizon like a beacon of hope. It was a milestone he had long awaited, marking not only his transition into adulthood but also the end of the abuse he endured at home.
On the day of his birthday, surrounded by the love and support of his friends, JJ made the easy decision to pack his belongings and move into the Chateau permanently, leaving behind the shadows of his past and embracing the promise of a brighter future.
As he settled into his true home, surrounded by the comforting presence of his chosen family, JJ knew that he was finally free to live life on his own terms, with the Pogues by his side every step of the way. And as they toasted to new beginnings and endless possibilities that night, JJ felt a sense of gratitude wash over him, knowing that he was exactly where he was meant to be.
He had long ago convinced himself that he'd never see Emily again, another fleeting encounter lost in the sands of time.
But fate, never a friend to JJ Maybank, had a way of playing tricks on him.
……
One afternoon in early Spring, as JJ lounged on the deck at the Chateau, nursing a cold beer and soaking in the salty breeze just starting to again turn warm, his phone rang, shattering the tranquility of the moment.
With a furrowed brow, he glanced at the caller ID, his curiosity piqued by the unfamiliar number.
“Hello?" he answered tentatively, wondering who could be calling him out of the blue.
"Is this JJ Maybank?" a voice on the other end asked, its tone serious and urgent.
“Uh, yeah," JJ replied, his heart beginning to race with apprehension.
“This is Wilmington General Hospital. We have a situation here involving a patient, Emily Jones, who listed you as the father of her newborn”.
The news slammed into JJ like a freight train, electrifying his senses with a surge of disbelief. Emily—her name echoed through his mind, stirring memories of blonde hair dancing in the firelight, later that night in his bed at the Chateau.
The missed call on his phone from her a month later that he never returned.
Emily... a baby... him as the father? It felt surreal, like a cruel twist of fate. Yet, buried beneath layers of denial, he knew it could easily be true. With a sinking feeling in his stomach, he managed to stammer a simple reply—"What?"
“Emily Jones came in this morning unexpectantly and delivered a baby. She surrendered the child and has since been discharged but before she left she provided your name and information as the father.”
“I-I didn’t know” JJ told the nurse, still in shock.
"I understand this must be incredibly challenging. Given the circumstances, we'll need you to come down here either to establish custody or address termination of parental rights, as you're listed on the birth certificate. Are you local, honey?" The nurse's voice carried a compassionate tone.
"No, but I can get there in maybe…like... six hours. Is that okay?" JJ's voice wavered with uncertainty.
"Of course, dear. We'll make sure he is well taken care of until you arrive. Drive safely, and we'll be waiting for you."
"Wait…'he'?" JJ's question hung in the air, met only by the abrupt dial tone, leaving him stunned with disbelief echoing through his entire being.
As he hung up the phone, JJ felt a surge of conflicting emotions washing over him. Anger, confusion, fear...with a heavy heart and a sense of determination burning within him, JJ made the decision to confront his past and face the consequences of his actions head-on. Little did he know, this choice would set him on a path that would change his life in ways he never could have imagined.
…..
"Hey, John B, I need a favor?" JJ approached his friend outside Hayward’s with a sheepish grin, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his board shorts.
"Sure, man. What's up?" John B replied, his brow furrowing with curiosity as he glanced at Pope, who shrugged in response. They had both just finished deliveries across the island for Pope’s father.
"I, uh, need a ride to the mainland," JJ mumbled, avoiding John B's gaze as he shifted uncomfortably on his feet.
John B and Pope exchanged puzzled glances, their confusion evident in their expressions.
"Why do you need to go to the mainland, JJ?" John B asked, his voice tinged with concern.
JJ hesitated, his mind racing as he struggled to find the right words. Finally, he let out a sigh, his shoulders slumping in defeat. "It's... complicated. But I need to go to Wilmington—please."
Sensing JJ's distress, John B and Pope exchanged a knowing look before nodding in silent agreement.
“Okay, man. We'll get you to Wilmington," John B said, clapping JJ on the back in a show of solidarity, “but we gotta stop by Kie’s first. I promised we’d pick her up after we were done with the deliveries.”
“Can’t we just call her. I really gotta go man,” JJ said with frustration.
But John B and Pope shared another look, if JJ was acting this serious, something was wrong and Kie could help crack him.
As they arrived at Kie's house, they found her waiting for them on the porch.
"Hey, guys. What's going on?" Kie asked, her eyes darting between them. John B exchanged a glance with JJ, silently conveying his support before turning to Kie.
"We're taking JJ to Wilmington," he explained, his voice grave.
Kie's eyes widened in surprise. "Wilmington? Why? What's going on?" she pressed, her tone tinged with confusion.
JJ hesitated, his throat feeling dry as he struggled to find the right words. Finally, he took a deep breath and met Kie's gaze head-on. "I just need to get there okay?”
Sensing the seriousness of the situation, Kie nodded, her expression softening with understanding, but deep down she knew she wasn’t giving up that easily.
"Okay, JJ. We’ll take my car. It’s a long trip," she said, her voice steady and reassuring.
As they settled into Kie's car, the tension in the air was palpable, each member of the Pogues silently grappling with their own thoughts and emotions.
JJ sat quietly in the backseat, staring out the window with a determined expression.
"Come on, JJ, spill the beans. We're in this together, remember?" John B, finally spoke up. "Seriously, dude, you're freaking us out. You need to tell us what's going on."
JJ sighed heavily, realizing he couldn't keep his friends in the dark any longer. Taking a deep breath, he began to explain the situation, "I got a call from the hospital," he began, his words coming out in a rush. "Emily—a tourist from last summer— she had a baby this morning. And— and apparently, it's mine."
The news hung heavy in the air, the gravity of the situation sinking in as the reality of JJ's words settled over them. John B's jaw dropped in disbelief, while Pope's eyes widened with shock.
"Are you serious, JJ?" Kie exclaimed, his voice laced with disbelief. "A baby? What are you gonna do?"
JJ's gaze fell to his hands, his mind racing with a whirlwind of conflicting thoughts and emotions. "I don't know," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. "But I can't just ignore it. I have to do something."
John B nodded in agreement, "We'll figure it out, JJ." He said, his voice steady and reassuring.
And as they continued on their journey to Wilmington, each member of the Pogues knew that they would stand by JJ's side, no matter what challenges lay ahead. They were more than just friends—they were family, bound together by a bond that could weather any storm.
…..
As they arrived at the hospital, Kie took charge, guiding the boys through the maze of corridors until they reached the maternity wing. With a sense of urgency, she approached the nurse's desk, her voice calm yet determined."Excuse me," she said, addressing the nurse behind the desk. "This is JJ Maybank”.
The nurse nodded, her expression sympathetic as she picked up the phone to make the call. Moments later, a social worker emerged from a nearby office, her warm smile offering a glimmer of reassurance amidst the uncertainty.
"Mr. Maybank?" she said, addressing JJ with gentle kindness. "I'm glad you're here. Would you like to see the baby?"JJ's heart pounded in his chest, his palms clammy with nervous anticipation.
"Yes," he managed to croak out, his voice barely above a whisper.
As the social worker led him towards the nursery, JJ felt like he couldn't breathe, his mind swirling with a whirlwind of emotions. Fear, uncertainty, but also a flicker of hope—a glimmer of possibility.
And as he stepped up to the large window pane looking into the nursery and laid eyes on his son for the first time, JJ felt something stir deep within him—a sense of responsibility, of purpose, of unconditional love.
As JJ stood in awe, gazing down at the tiny blonde bundle in the bassinet marked as ‘Baby Boy Jones’ next to the window, Pope, John B, and Kie crowded around him, their eyes wide with awe and wonder.
"Whoa," Pope exclaimed, his voice hushed with reverence. "He looks just like you, JJ."
John B nodded in agreement, a grin spreading across his face. "Seriously, man. There's no way that kid is not yours."
Kie reached out, gently touching JJ's arm with a reassuring smile. "You can't deny it, Jayje," she said softly. "He's the spitting image of you."
JJ's heart swelled with a mixture of pride and disbelief as he looked down at his son, marveling at the uncanny resemblance between them. The baby had his nose, his light blonde hair, iridescent in the fluorescent hospital lighting.
Despite the chaos and uncertainty swirling around him, in that moment, he felt a sense of clarity and purpose unlike anything he had ever known.
"Yeah," he whispered, his voice choking with emotion. "He's mine."
…..
The Pogues gave JJ some space as the social worker outlined his options, a heavy weight settled in the pit of his stomach. The thought of abandoning his son, leaving him to navigate the uncertainty of the foster care system, was unbearable.
"What's the other option?" JJ asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
The social worker met his gaze with empathy, her expression softening with understanding.
"He's yours," she said simply. "He'll be discharged in a day or two. You can stay with him until then, make arrangements, and take him home."
The thought of raising his son, of providing him with a loving and stable home he himself never had, filled him with a sense of purpose but also quite frankly scared the shit out of him.
But with a newfound sense of determination, JJ nodded, his decision made. "I'll take him home," he said, his voice steady with resolve. And as he prepared to embark on this new chapter of his life, JJ knew that he would do whatever it took to give his son the love and support he deserved. More than anyone, he understood that being a father meant more than just biology—it meant being there, every step of the way, no matter what.
"I'm gonna raise him," JJ declared, his voice steady despite the tumult of emotions swirling within him as he returned to the Pogues.
The others nodded in silent agreement, their unwavering support a beacon of strength in JJ's moment of uncertainty. And as they stood together, united in their determination to see this through, a nurse approached with a smile, delivering the reassuring news that the baby was healthy and thriving.
"His birthday is April 3rd," the nurse added, a twinkle of amusement in her eyes, “6lb 2 oz, 19 inches long. Congratulations.”
Kie let out a soft laugh, her gaze flickering between JJ and the baby. The three boys looked at her.
“An Aries, just like you, JJ," she remarked, a hint of wonder in her voice. "Twin fire signs."
And in that moment, as they welcomed the newest member of their ragtag family into the world, they knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, they would face them together, bound by love, loyalty, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship.
……
As the Pogues sprang into action mode, Pope swiftly made arrangements with his parents, ensuring that everything would be ready for JJ's impending arrival home.
"Mom, Dad, we need your help," Pope said urgently over the phone.
Meanwhile, John B volunteered to take Kie and Pope back home, but not before assuring JJ of their unwavering support.
"I’ll be back to help in the morning, JJ. You're not in this alone, man" John B said, his voice brimming with determination
As they said their temporary goodbyes, JJ's expression grew serious as he reveled in his decision that would change all of their lives.
"Are you sure about this, JJ?" Kie asked, her eyes searching his for reassurance
"I've never been more sure of anything in my life," JJ replied, his tone leaving no room for doubt.
With Kie offering to talk to her parents and John B declaring he would start getting the Chateau ready, the Pogues rallied around their friend, united in their mission to protect and support him.
JJ stood in the hallway as his friends left, his mind swirling with disbelief and uncertainty. This was never how he had seen his day ending up.
Lost in his thoughts, JJ was startled when the nurse from earlier appeared before him, her warm smile a stark contrast to his inner turmoil. "Would you like to meet your son?" Her gentle voice broke through the haze of his thoughts, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos, as JJ merely nodded at her in affirmation.
"Let’s get you settled in a room then,” she said, guiding him into one of the hospital rooms where another nurse was swaddling the baby in a pale blue baby blanket.
JJ hesitated, his heart pounding with anticipation. "I've never done this before," he admitted nervously, as she ushered him to a chair, placing the bundle into his arms.
"You're doing great, dad," the nurse reassured him, causing a pang in his stomach.
This was the first time he’d been called that. As JJ settled in with his son cradled in his arms, their eyes met for the first time too, four blue orbs locking in a silent connection. In that moment, JJ knew that this was exactly what he was meant for.
