Summary
“I think I’m pregnant,” she blurts. Her voice isn’t loud, but Kiara swears her words stick to the air itself.
The silence after is thick, hanging between them as JJ lifts his head. Now, there’s no avoidance, no eyes on the ground, no pretending she’s anyone but her. Instead, his blue eyes – wide in a way that makes him look younger – dart from her face to the arms wrapped around her stomach and back again. In his hand, the cigarette burns lower and lower as the silence lingers between them.
He opens his mouth. Closes it. Blinks. And, where earlier she’d wished for him to look her in the eye, now she just wishes he would look away.
JJ takes one shaky step toward her – still favoring his left side – and then jerks his hand with a sharp, “Fuck!”
He fumbles, tugging at his shirt with one hand and swiping at it with the other. The remnants of the cigarette hit the sand, smoldering out between them as he croaks out, “Like… with a baby?”
“No, with a fuckin’ puppy,” she bites out before she can stop herself. His brows twist down, forehead creasing in – confusion? hurt? annoyance? – and she hisses, “Yes, dumbass, a baby.”

Lying on the floor with every inch of her body aching. The scent of vomit in her nose. Lips trembling and tasting like sick.
John B lies in front of her and pretends not to smell the death on her breath. He just watches her with those eyes – the ones that had always gotten him everything. Dates at The Boneyard. Extra attention from teachers. Even a crush from Kie once.
JJ would have done anything for those eyes. Would have given anything. And did, a mean little voice whispers to her.
She doesn’t know how she got here either.
In a world without JJ. In a world without the fucking sun.

Following Morocco, the Pogues come home one short. While the rest of the island seems to be moving forward, Kiara finds herself standing still in a world haunted by the boy she lost. (AKA, the slowest of slow burn fix-its)

Summary
It’s like he’s been collecting pieces of her heart, slowly, leaving a gap between her lungs. A space that, if he chooses, his heart might one day fill. It’s dangerous and terrifying, falling for her best friend, but the sun is warmer than it’s ever been, the salt breeze stronger and whole, and every time JJ turns to her, smiling after some stupid joke, her face lights up in return.
JJ and Kiara have been spiraling towards each other for years, and all it takes is one trip to Charleston, a thunderstorm, and a dance.

“You just…” Her eyes rake over his body, as if searching for an answer. “I don’t know. You seem… heavy?”
He didn’t think there’d be much of a change. He didn’t think anyone would be able to tell. He certainly didn’t think it would make you heavy. But he doesn’t really feel light, either.
He wants to reach out and put his hand on her back, or better yet, tug her by the sleeve until she’s lying down next to him, but his hand stays glued to his side.
“I had sex.”

She thinks of the words on the plaque, recites them over and over in her head, until she pinpoints exactly why they bother her. They describe JJ perfectly, of that there is no doubt. He was the best brother to the Pogues, especially John B and Pope. John B did ask him to be Josie’s godfather, and he would have been amazing and taken his role very seriously. He absolutely was the King of Friendship, bound by love and loyalty, both running deep. A martyr, devoted beyond what anyone ever asked, until there was nothing left of him.
All these things are true. The words themselves are accurate.
But where were the words for her? Where were the words that told the world of his love for her?
