Henry’s first word is ‘dogdog’, pointing at one of their grandmother’s hounds. His second is ‘Pip’ which is as close as a child can be expected to get to Philip. No one is in the least bit surprised.
When Henry gets bad dreams, or if he’s scared of the dark or during a thunderstorm, it’s not his parents who he seeks out in the night. It’s Philip. More times than he can count Philip wakes up to find his arms already full of his younger brother.
Philip tells himself over and over, that’s not where it started. Let those memories be innocent, even after everything that comes later.
