Chapter 1: You Can Try, Oh but I

Chapter Text

The Captain marched down the halls of Button House humming The March of Gibraltar with a little bit more pep in his step then usual, swinging one arm back and forth while holding his swagger stick. Making his way down to the lobby halls, he heard a song from his time. He conjured up a closed smile that reached his eyes because he knew a certain Major was waiting for him to pass.

Havers sat at one of the unoccupied seats looking up at the ceiling of Button House. He’s been here before obviously but due to the renovations it was as good as new. Modern but still held its foundations and traditional history. He heard humming coming from down the hall and he turned his head. He smiled at the sight in front of him and he stood up. “Hello, sir.”

The Captain beamed back at him, “Havers! At ease. No need for formalities.”

Havers began walking side by side with the Captain, their destination was a patrol around the grounds. Hands behind his back

“I could say the same for you too, sir. You don’t have to call me by my family name.”

“Ah, force of habit I’m afraid.”

Havers chuckled and the Captain’s heart soared. “I’ve missed you terribly, James.” Havers confessed quietly. Bumping his shoulder to the latter.

The Captain stuttered, “I-I missed you too.”

“And…” Havers stopped and turned to the Captain, “I meant what I said to you when we first saw each other after all these years.”

“Really?” The Captain’s voice became quiet and shy.

“Of course!”

Their cheeks began to blush pink and Havers took hold of the Captain’s hand, interlocking their fingers, “I love you.” He declared, his voice garbling a bit like radio frequencies being adjusted but still clear.

James smiled and tightened his hold on Havers’ hand, “I love you too.” He didn’t want to let go. “Oh- before I forget… obviously I- well- we need to introduce yourself to the others!”

Ah, Anthony forgotten the others who he is now going to share the rest of eternity with along the Captain. “Right, I’m afraid I might have completely forgotten about them.” Havers said sheepishly, scratching the back of his head.

“As soon as you get to know them, it’s hard to forget about them entirely.”

When they entered into the ballroom, the ghosts were all in the midst of attempting to listen to Thomas’ 400th recital of Hermione and Roger.

Julian groaned, “when will this end?!”

Kitty answered, “I’m not sure, but from what I remember, it was two hours long!”

There was another chorus of groans and a voice of offence, “for goodness sakes! Hermione and Roger is an epic poem that has raptured the audience!!”

If Mary were here she would have said, ‘not how I remembers it.’

The Captain looked at Havers apologetically, “I apologize about them. They can be… well.”

Havers smiled at him, “it’s okay. It’s infinitely better than absolutely nothing at all.”

The Captain’s eyes beamed at Havers. Oh how he was lucky to have him back. The ghostly CO of Button house turned his attention to the squabbling group and cleared his throat loud enough for them all to hear. The group turned their attention to the two army men.

“Alright, now we had a very eventful thing happen a couple days ago, as you know, a new ally is now with us here at Button House!” The Captain gestured Anthony to step forward.

Anthony waved and nodded politely, “Hello everyone. My name is Anthony Havers. I was stationed here at Button House with the Captain here while I was alive. I don’t think I’ll be… stating how I died considering you all have already heard it.”

There was a collective nod and murmurs of, “yeah.”

“Yeah no we did that.”

“Mhm.”

“Yup.”

“Well, it’s good to have you here with us Anthony!” Pat perked up, “I’m Pat, and this is Robin—“

The caveman grunted with a wave.

“This here is Julian, Kitty, Thomas, Lady B—“ they all waved and said hello.

“Aaand-! Where’s Humphrey?” Pat asked around, everyone looking around the ballroom. Turns out he was just under one of the tables.

“I’m right here!! Hello!” Humphrey greeted, albeit a bit muffled with his face planted to the floor. “My body says hello too! Somewhere… probably.”

“And that’s everyone!” Pat concluded with a clap of his hand.

“Nice to meet you all.” Havers smiled.

“Good! Now that you are all acquainted with my former Lieutenant, turned Major—“ the Captain turned to Havers and smiled, “care to join me on my morning patrol?”

“I’d love to.”

The pair headed out to patrol the grounds of Button House. As the ghosts watched, they remained quiet. Until they were sure that the group was out of earshot from the pair, Julian said, “Something is up with the Captain.”

“What do you mean?” Pat asked, his head twisting confused.

“I can hear it in his voice, and the way he looked at Anthony,” Julian flapped a hand about. “I’ve seen it in the House of Commons with the secretaries.”

“It’s not exactly a secret is it?” Thomas asked.

“He told us the day Robin thought we'd all pass on!” Fanny squawked and glared at Robin in the end who looked around the room, whistling attempting to ignore the lapse in his judgment that day.

“Well, he’s hoarding Anthony from us!” the Politician threw his hands up in the air.

“You wanna bet?” Robin wagered.

“I’m not betting when I’m right!!”

----

Julian Fawcett, former MP (disgraced) was in fact correct.

“Remember when I said—“

“WE GET IT!” The ghosts yelled at him, all sat at the ballroom talking amongst each other

“It has been an entire week! And we’ve barely gotten to know the man the Captain is betrothed with!” Thomas sighed exasperatedly, lounging along the sofa.

“Not just that! We not see Captain in days!” Robin said.

“Ohh, I miss the Captain.” Kitty pouted.

“What we need is an intervention.” Fanny suggested, “he’s avoiding us entirely! It is exceptionally rude, especially such for a gentleman like himself.” The Victorian woman stood up, the rest watched as she surprisingly lead on. “We need to find him.”
