TRANSCRIPTION
[Vertical video of a random New York City street, posted on Instagram by @meetcutesnyc. A young man, around 23, walks into frame with a black Chanel beanie, silver mullet peeking out from under it, and dressed in a black sleeveless hoodie, dark wash denim jorts, and brown boots. He’s walking with his arm slung around the shoulders of another shorter man, also around 23, with long, shoulder length blonde hair that’s slicked back, dressed in an oversized plain white tee, black shorts, and black slides. They’re each drinking iced americanos.]
INTERVIEWER: [Off-camera] Excuse me, sorry, are you two a couple?
BLONDE GUY: [Scowling, walking faster] Not interested in what you’re selling.
INTERVIEWER: [Quickly] I’m not selling anything! We’re asking couples for the story of how they first met!
BEANIE GUY: [Walking back from where he was pulled forward by his partner, moving his arm away and jumping up and down] Oh my god, I know you guys!!! [To blonde guy] We have to do it.
BLONDE GUY: [Frowning, but already walking back] Why not.
[A username and name pops up on the beanie guy’s body, edited in, @ho5hi_kwon, Soonyoung. On the other, @woozi_prod, Jihoon]
SOONYOUNG: Jihoonie is a barista at my favorite coffee shop down near Washington Square park and he makes the best coffee in New York City.
JIHOON: He’s flattering me.
SOONYOUNG: No, I’m serious! I’m a coffee connoisseur, I’ve tried, like, every coffee shop in Manhattan AND Brooklyn.
JIHOON: Doubtful.
SOONYOUNG: Anyways, I kept on going to the shop, for the coffee at first, but then because I was so intrigued by him. He barely talks to the customers, even if they are regulars.
JIHOON: I’m just here to give people their coffee.
SOONYOUNG: [Continuing, as if Jihoon hadn’t said anything] And plus, he’s sooo cute! [He turns to Jihoon and reaches to squeeze his cheeks. Jihoon lets him.]
JIHOON: He kept on coming in and talking to me— and it’s not like I hate people—
SOONYOUNG: [Interrupting] — babe, you kinda do.
JIHOON: [Protesting] I don’t! I swear! [He shakes his head fondly, and sighs] Okay I kinda do, but Soonyoungie doesn’t count. He kept talking to me and I realized he’s actually a really cool guy.
SOONYOUNG: [Deadpan, but jokingly] Glad to know my boyfriend thinks I’m a [in air quotes] “really cool guy”.
JIHOON: [Grumbling] You know what I mean.
[Soonyoung ruffles Jihoon’s hair and Jihoon smiles, softly.]
SOONYOUNG : After we kept talking, I realized he’s also this insanely talented music producer and that coffee is just a side hustle of his. His main passion is music and he’s really good, probably the best producer in New York City!
JIHOON: Stop saying I’m the best in New York City Soonyoung…
SOONYOUNG: No I’m serious! I’m a dancer so I listen to a lot of music and Jihoonie’s is seriously excellent. Great for dance too, his rhythms are so creative. We found that we have a lot in common after we talked for a while and we started dating not too long after our first date.
INTERVIEWER: What was your first date?
SOONYOUNG: [Gushing] Oh my god it was the best. We went to this underground concert thing at this random bar in Brooklyn that had this insane lineup of artists I hadn’t heard of before but Jihoon knew. We danced and drank for a bit but then we ended up finding a corner and talking, just the two of us, until, like, 3 am.
JIHOON: The performers were actually a bunch of my friends and they all teased me for weeks cause I brought my date to their gig instead of just supporting them.
SOONYOUNG: They all need to get laid. Especially Vernon and Shua. Preferably together.
JIHOON: Agreed.
INTERVIEWER: How long ago was this?
JIHOON: Just over 6 months.
INTERVIEWER: 6 months in, what’s your favorite thing about each other?
JIHOON: [Looking between the camera and Soonyoung] He’s so energetic. At first it sorta scared me, but now it just keeps me going. He’s a glass half full kind of guy and he somehow always has motivation and positivity, and it really helps me when I feel down.
SOONYOUNG: [Wiping a tear] Baby, that was so beautiful.
JIHOON: [Blushing] Shut up.
INTERVIEWER: [To Soonyoung] What about you?
SOONYOUNG: [To the camera, lightheartedly] There’s too many things about my Jihoonie that are my favorite! [To Jihoon, suddenly very serious] You’re so driven and it inspires me so much. You’re also the best listener, I worry sometimes that I talk too much or that I bore you [At this, Jihoon frowns and shakes his head, adamant] but you always listen to me with such attention I don’t really know what I’ve done to deserve it.
[At this, Jihoon reaches for Soonyoung’s hand and rubs over the junctions between his thumb and pointer finger. They look at each other, and seem to have a moment just watching each other.]
INTERVIEWER: [Clearing his throat] Uh, and what are your names?
SOONYOUNG: I’m Soonyoung, or Hoshi when I dance.
JIHOON: Jihoon. Woozi when I produce.
INTERVIEWER: Thanks!
[The pair walk off, this time hand in hand and sipping their coffees. The video ends.]
