He hadn’t wanted to let go of her, even though he knew what awaited him at home if he dallied in the forest. There was a reason why the villagers, including his parents, were wary of the forest, where nature refused to bend to man’s will. Within it dwelled many unimaginable things, including the creature he held in his arms.

He'd seen his father's drawings often enough to recognize what she was and what he ought to do. Dragons were predators beyond compare; capable of laying waste to countless places and faces when the mood took them. Yet, he found the pathetic sight of her oddly thrilling, rather than repulsive or revolting, as if she had already sunk her claws beneath his skin and burrowed her way into his very being. She needed someone to care for her.
