Amy and Hartley. They’re an interesting combination, right? I mean, don't get me wrong, it’s been wonderful watching their progress. To think Amy despised Hartley at first... But it still shocks me whenever I see a physical and emotional change in their relationship. It shows how close they've gotten in the little time they have been friends, especially when Amy and Hartley spent the day together on the first of June. Yes, the irony of that is uncanny, June being Pride Month and all.
This happened two days ago when Amy and Hartley were on their way to the Sunshine Club meeting. Hartley was incredibly annoyed that Amy was taking her sweet time. "Oh my God," Hartley said, her voice coated with much annoyance and urgency to get to the Sunshine Club meeting on time. "Hurry up, Amy. With the way you're walking, without a care in the world, you’ll make us late for the meeting!" she exclaimed, tugging at Amy's arm. Jake had stayed a few feet behind them. Of course, Hartley didn’t mind if he was late for school, for she would have acknowledged him going slower than Amy. However, Jake had little to no care. Hartley had put him in charge of tending to the elderly. Jake was dead set on spending the least amount of time with them as possible. Last time, Gilda, one of the older ladies at the elderly home, more pushy than Celia, had complained, "This tea isn't made right, Squarehead! I asked for double sugar, and you only put in one." Jake was in no mood to hear her complaints.
Amy grunted, yet smiled. "I hope you know that we're always going to be late when you put me and any form of charity together," she pointed out to Hartley, speeding up her pace to match Hart's speed walking. She's walking like one of those old ladies on a Saturday morning, Amy thought. The ones who speed walk through the neighborhood at 7 AM, singing 'What a Wonderful World' by Louis Armstrong at the top of their lungs for no good reason. Hartley attempted to hold in her laugh but failed miserably as she let out a chuckle. "I know," she murmured.
Jake put in his airpods, playing ‘Late Night Talking’ by Harry Styles at full volume. This was a conversation just for the two of them.
Amy reached for Hartley's hand, Hartley let her take hold of it. “C’mon, Hart, with all this talk you're doing you're going to make us late!” Amy said as she began to run, pulling Hartley along with her. Hart scoffed playfully, “Yeah my fault.” She mocked with a roll of her eyes. “I know right!” Amy replied, her voice heavy with sarcasm.
“Oh you be quiet,” Hartley chuckled, gently punching Ames's arm.
Need I say more? And then, not even a full twenty-four hours later Amy comes out to Hartley as she drew the lesbian flag on her left cheek. Hartley gasped as fixed her position on the bed, her legs now on the edge so she could see what amy had done. “Really?” She asked amy slowly. Amy nodded. “Huh. I never would've guessed”, she said, placing her hand on Amy. Amy put the markers back in the box, placing them farther along the bed. Amy sat crossed-legged with Hartley's head on her shoulder. “That's really the only comment you’ll make about it?” Amy questioned, puzzled by Hartley not making a bigger scene than that.
Hartley laced their fingers together, “I’m being supportive, Ames. What more do you want from me?” Hartley may have scoffed at the end of her sentence, but she was far from upset at Amy. Amy stayed quiet for a long time after that. What do I want? Amy mused. “I don't know,” She replied with a sigh, “Can we just, stay like this for a bit?”
“Sure, Amy.” Said Hartley, flustered.
But if you were to ask either of them if something was going on between them, of course, they'd deny it. That is how its always been, and how it's always going be. They do like each other like that. They know it, we know it. They're just too dumb to put it to words. Jake got Colby's perspective of this whole “Amy x Hartley” situation earlier today. Jake asked, “Do you think they like each other, or what?” The reply was “I’m pretty sure it's a craving, not a crush.
So I suppose that’s what we're labeling whatever this is.
