don’t look back

Summary:

why kazuki and soushi were a tragic pair.

Work Text:

Kazuki was Orpheus, and Soushi was Eurydice. A tale told old as time, it goes like this:

Orpheus, graced by the muse of song, loved Eurydice.

“Did I fall in love with you first, or did you fall in love with me first?” Kazuki asked, his giggle soft as the way Soushi combed his hair.

“Kazuki, the moment I met you… the song in your heart enthralled me.” Soushi responds, which only makes Kazuki roll his eyes. To him, it was sappy — but how else could Soushi explain the hasty rhythm of his heart?

“But who knows,” Soushi said, “who slipped love letters to whose locker?~”

“S-Soushi—!” Kazuki blushed. “… You dummy..”

Soushi laughed, but who was the fool in this tale? Was it Eurydice, who accepted him without hesitation? Or Orpheus who was careless and hopelessly in love?

They were both fools! Their love was destined to never last forever!

And yet they stayed, hand in hand, because they were fools that loved each other. Of course Orpheus was careless, of course Eurydice befell in death to Hades. But they were in love, their love beats stronger as a powerful song.

“Are you there, Kazuki?”

Kazuki was here.

Soushi was there.

Hades promised Orpheus Eurydice’s safety, but under one condition:

‘Don’t look back.’

but what did Orpheus do?

Kazuki turned. Orpheus turned.

They looked back.

Why did you do that?

Why did you look back?

“… Soushi…”

Kazuki’s throat began to knot, as they were in their Alvis uniform — within nothingness. Ah — in Hades’s domain…

“Why did you look back, Kazuki?”

Why did Orpheus look back?

Farther and farther were they pulled further apart from each other.

Why did Orpheus look back?

“… because..”

Because…

Because Orpheus loved Eurydice.

Because Kazuki loved Soushi. That is why he looked back. Because he couldn’t hear Soushi, he couldn’t see Soushi. He thought he was tricked — He loved Soushi / Orpheus loved Eurydice.

That, Soushi understood. That, Soushi knew. That was why Kazuki was Orpheus and Soushi was Eurydice.
