Work Text:
Sam suggested they stop in a diner for a moment. They had just finished with a ghoul case, Dean was celebrating at a bar while Sam and Castiel were going to quote on quote celebrate in the tiny diner.
Sam led the angel over to a booth seat, which guaranteed space for them to sit together comfortably and surprisingly plush booth seats. Sam takes out his phone, most likely telling his brother where they are. A woman walks to their booth with a small notepad and a menu.
"Welcome, how may I help you this evening?" greeted the waitress. She puts down the menu and holds her notepad at the ready.
"I'll have a grilled chicken salad and a strawberry milkshake. You want anything Castiel?"
"Just a water."
"Then that's everything."
"You got it, I'll be out with your drink momentarily," replied the waitress.
Castiel gazed out the window while Sam set up his laptop on the booth table. The waitress appeared and dropped off the water at the table before returning to the counter. Castiel listened to Sam clack away on his laptop. The familiarity of the sound relaxed the angel and he leaned back in the booth's cushion.
The waitress returned with a large strawberry milkshake with whipped cream a cherry on top; and two straws.
"Do humans who normally drink with two straws?" Castiel asked once the waitress was gone. His head was tilted as it normally did when the angel was confused.
"If they're sharing the drink," Sam explained as he poured his dressing on the salad and mixed the ingredients.
"Are we sharing the drink?"
Sam blushed and cleared his throat.
"We can share if you want," Sam replied.
"I would like that, I've never had a milkshake before." Castiel examined the glass. "Is it just thick milk?"
"Kind of, it also has ice cream mixed in, that's usually how they flavor it."
Castiel nodded. Sam leaned over the table first and took a sip from the shake. Castiel followed suit, albeit hesitantly.
"It's very viscous," Castiel said. Sam snorted.
"Yeah, it's a little too thick. It might need to melt down before we can drink it.
Castiel stared at the glass for a moment. They put his hand on it and it began to glow. Sam's eyebrows flew up and his eyes widened. His hand moved around the glass to block the grace glow.
"What are you doing? There are so many people here," Sam stage whispered.
"I am warming it up."
Sam stared at him and Castiel stared back. Suddenly, Sam was aware that he was touching Castiel's hand. He felt his face heat up, "You're gonna make it gross if you do it too long," Sam muttered and pulled his hand away, embarrassed. He hoped Castiel wouldn't notice his quick reflex. Sam didn't want to explain how touching the angel was weird to him, especially now that they were sort of, kind of dating.
Castiel took their hand off the cup shortly after Sam did. He leaned forward and drank from the glass.
"See, it's much smoother," Castiel commented. Sam took another sip.
"Yeah." Sam smiled with an eye roll. "You are tense, are you alright Sam?" Of course, Castiel noticed, they always seemed to notice when it came to Sam, it was sweet and Sam thoroughly enjoyed the attention, but it was also inconvenient.
"It's nothing, just hunter stuff- we're always paranoid and ready to fight... and stuff," Sam said. It was an incredibly unconvincing lie, he hoped the angel wouldn't mention it to Dean later. Castiel gave Sam a skeptical look. "Look, this is just really weird for me, I haven't been on a date in a long time," he mended.
"I have never been on a date as you say."
"I figured as much."
Castiel smiled and Sam melted, like the whipped cream on their milkshake. Speaking of which, their table was a sticky mess where the topping had spilled over the side of the cup. The hunter ignored that train of thought and put his hand on the table and Castiel placed their hand over his.
Castiel raised Sam's hand to his lips and pressed a feather-soft kiss there. Sam scrunched his nose.
"Could you hand me a napkin,"
"Must I?"
"You just had to melt the milkshake."
"Fine"
Castiel grabbed a few napkins. He handed Sam one and put the others under the glass to absorb the mess.
Sam wiped his hand off as Castiel cleaned up the table.
"They put too much whipped cream," Castiel muttered.
"It was the perfect amount before you heated it. Your grace works so strangely."
"My grace works as I want it to," Castiel said. "You are calling me strange, aren't you."
Sam grinned at them. He picked up the glass and took another sip of the milkshake. His face sours slightly.
"It melted a lot, it's gross now."
"That's your fault.
"I am not having this argument. I'm going to eat, then we are leaving."
"That's fine with me, do want my water to drink instead?" Castiel moved his glass of water over to Sam's side of the table.
"Yes, thank you."
After Sam finished eating and the bill was paid for, Castiel reached for Sam's hand, interlacing their fingers with the hunter's.
"You never finished explaining the plot of the Twilight Saga," Castiel said once they were in the car.
"You want me to keep going?"
"Very much so, yes."
"Alright, but you're driving then."
"I am alright with that arrangement." They swapped seats in the car and Castiel started the engine.
"Where did I leave off?"
"Eclipse I believe."
"Right, so Bella is graduating high school, her friend gives a beautiful speech about being young and making mistakes. I kinda hoped Bella would take it to heart, and reconsider becoming a vampire, but it didn't change her mind." Sam paused for a moment to stop himself from going off-topic. "Anyway, she goes to this graduation party that Jabob goes to so he can give her a little graduation present and Edward gets all weird about it, so he gives her a more expensive present to show up Jacob; as if he and Bella weren't already together, so it's just a pissing contest on who can 'mark their territory on Bella more'."
"Why are they fighting over her, I do not understand why they act as if she cannot choose for herself."
"Plot is my guess, it makes for an interesting read if there's a love triangle."
"It is to my understanding that there are many other people in the town they live in."
"Bella is the main character Cas, she is wanted by every creature ever 'cause that's what the author wants."
Castiel hummed, "It is stupid."
Sam snorted, "I never said it wasn't. I'm getting off track-- Victoria is still a threat because the Cullens are the most incompetent vampires when it comes to conflict, even though Jasper was a solider of some kind-" The angel let out an aborted laugh. "Victoria is starting a vampire army to take down the Cullens since she is the last left of her little group. Stuff happens in between the vampire cult and Bella going into hiding again, but it was boring so I don't remember."
"Bella goes into hiding again?"
"Yup." Castiel sighed which made Sam laugh. "Are you done interrupting?" Sam asked pointedly. "For now," Castiel replied. Sam chuckled.
"Bella goes into hiding, with Edward and Jacob which is awkward because she has to cuddle with Jacob for warmth because they are on a snowy mountaintop." Castiel looked like they had something to say, but held it in. Sam had to stop himself from laughing before continuing. "Victoria finds them, 'cause of course she does. Edward kills her and Bella has a strange moment with Jacob where he's like 'Do you want to be with him- kiss me or I'll kill myself,' blah. blah, blah. Bella kissed him 'cause of course she did, she still cares about him even though he is a total tool."
"Wait, Jacob made Bella kiss him?" Castiel interjected.
"Surprisingly, that's not even the worst thing he does," Sam sighed and he shook his head.
"He gets worse?"
"I haven't even gotten to Breaking Dawn yet."
Castiel exhaled heavily and stopped the car. Sam placed his hand on Castiel's knee in mock comfort. He patted it a couple of times before he removed it.
"Before we get out, I forgot to say that Edward proposed to Bella, and that is why Jacob wanted to kiss her," Sam explained. He exited the car. Castiel rolled his eyes and followed after Sam, "Of course, Edward proposing is what caused that reaction, do Edward and Bella get married?"
"That's the next book. Which is for the next car ride."
"Very well."
They walked in silence briefly until they reached the door to the motel room Sam and Dean were staying in. Sam smiled at him and grabbed the sleeve of Castiel's trench coat. He pulled him into a kiss. Castiel's hands move to rest on Sam's abdomen while Sam's hands lightly grasp Castiel's arms. The door opened unbeknownst to them.
"Get out of here you weirdos," Dean groaned. Sam and Castiel pulled apart. Castiel squeezed Sam's hand before they left for their motel room. Dean made a face at his brother who punched him in the arm. "So-o-o-o, how was your date?"
"I'm not discussing this with you." Sam pushed past Dean into the room."
"What? You too old to tell your big brother about your date?"
"Yes!"
"Boo, you are no fun."
Sam walked back over to punch Dean again. "Dude, lay off!"
The younger man only scoffed and disappeared into the bathroom. Dean pulled his phone out of his pocket and went to call Castiel, "Don't you ask Castiel about it either!" yelled Sam from the bathroom. Dean mocked him and threw his phone down on his bed.
"I wasn't!" Dean called back. The silence that followed was judgemental.
