You Fix My Heart, and I'll Fix Yours

Summary:

After his thorough humbling at the X-Games, Bradley Uppercrust the 3rd is on the road to redemption. And he really wants to succeed at this without cheating. So far, he's been doing well. However, he hasn't worked up to properly apologizing to a certain Goof who he may or may not be developing feelings for. It's only when a recent series of events provides Bradley with an opportune chance to make things right. Both for Max's sake and his.

Work Text:

The summer season seemed to leave as quickly as it came. One minute everyone was hanging out on the beach in their daisy dukes and driving with the top down on their convertibles, the next minute cafes all around were pushing out their pumpkin spice stock and the tree limbs were naked after the leaves fell off to ring in the autumn season. But sudden as the change was it didn't stop people from enjoying their lives – good and bad moments.

In particular a certain Saluki was living it up as only he could.

“Hey Bradley!” Called a male cat student as he watched the Saluki grind down a handrail before skating down the sidewalk.

The Saluki waved at the person who called out to him and continued to skate down. You would think, after how the X-Games ended, that Bradley would be too ashamed and disgraced to stay at Welig University. Nevermind show his face on campus. But not Bradley. As per his usual unflappable confidence – Bradley held his chiseled chin up high and still carried on like nothing happened.

At least, that's how he appeared on the outside. Of course, a lot of stuff happened. Ever since the X-Games had come and gone, a lot of the students lost respect for Bradley and the Gammas for cheating. And of course the Gammas had a falling out among themselves. Several members left the fraternity – and Bradley was this close to leaving his room there and staying in a campus apartment until a mediator advised him to stay. But the friendship between him, Tank, Slouch, Kevin, Shades, Federico and Boris had all but dissolved. They kept their distance from Bradley, and Bradley definitely stayed clear of them. His parents were just as unhappy with his actions, as they had to do a lot of apologizing and make many donations to the school just to keep their son from getting expelled. And while he didn't show it in the beginning Bradley was ashamed of how much he had made his parents look at him with such disdain over what he had done. Deep down all he ever wanted was to be the best, both for himself and for them. That and a lot more stuff came out when they fought about it. Some stuff he didn't totally mean and, as a result, he hasn't really spoken to his parents directly since then. Broken friendships, unimpressed peers and disappointed parents. It seemed like no one was in Bradley's corner anymore. And he deserved every bit of loneliness.

...However, one person didn't think that way. Maximilian Goof didn't think that way.

Bradley can still remember when Max came to visit him in the hospital after the Saluki had come down from his literal high after the whole Tank hurling him into the TV blimp thing. Bradley was amazed that he didn't die and just walked away with a broken ankle and sprained wrist. That kind of luck you only see happen in cartoons. But as he sat in his hospital bed he didn't really have a rush of visitors. His parents came, of course, to check on him. They felt the concern first before the anger and shame of his prior actions took over. And then some reporters and the dean of the university came to interrogate him. And the hospital staff came to check his vitals. But after that Bradley was pretty much left to be on his own in his VIP hospital room. No one came...until Max. Bradley wasn't sure if he was asleep or not until Max referred to him as Brad, then he knew he wasn't dreaming. He also vividly remembered the bouquet the Labradoodle brought in. They were pale peach roses – which symbolize harmony, sincerity and new beginnings. Bradley inwardly chuckled at the floral language. Of course, Max would get roses that represented such happy, serene traits.

I'm glad you're not too hurt”, he remembered Max saying.

I gotta say, you really had me worried when you didn't show up for class for so long. Never pegged you as a slow healer”, came the awkward joking statement from the younger Goof next.

Bradley just remembered staring at Max in shock, wondering why he would even come to check up on him. Especially after all he had done. Apparently the question was clear on his face without him having to say it, and Max answered the unspoken question with words that Bradley didn't know he needed to hear until they were spoken.

Look. Of course I'm mad at you for what you did. Of course I don't like how you acted. But that doesn't mean I hate you exactly. Hell – when you're not being a jerk I actually admire your charm, skill and ambition. But seriously, you gotta tone it down dude. You almost lost something you couldn't get back. And no trophy could ever replace it. I want to skate against you again, and I want you to bring your A-game. No tricks. I know you can do it. You just have to want to do it. So...I guess that's it. Take care, Brad”.

And with that, Max left. Like a supporting lead in a movie giving Bradley, the down on his luck main character, some important advice that once went over his head that he only now understands while he was at rock bottom. And by God did that advice hit Bradley like a freight train, corny as it may sound. In that moment the Saluki stopped feeling sorry for himself and actually worked to get back on his feet – both with his health and as a person. Bradley's broken ankle and sprained wrist became things of the past when he actually started working at it with physical therapy. From there he slowly but surely worked to become new person. The first people he had a heart to heart with were his parents, formally apologizing to them for how he acted. Bradley admitted that he didn't mean all of what he had said, that he was mainly angry at himself and just felt hurt like his parents didn't see how far he was willing to go to be the best for them. Of course, he now understood that they wouldn't want him to go as far as he did just to prove something like that. Many tears were shared between son, father and mother. But it was necessary to help them finally get on the same page to fix their fractured bond. Bradley also started to be more helpful to his peers on campus. At least with the ones who'd give him the time of day. Others who wanted to keep their distance he didn't push to accept him. He already knew that not everyone would be so quick to forgive as some others would. But those who did acknowledge the work Bradley was putting in to improve himself were very touched by his efforts. Even the dean became less of a hard ass on the senior. And the coach of the varsity team allowed Bradley to re-apply for the sports team but put him through twice the work to test if he really had his heart in it. And the Saluki gladly ran every extra lap, did twice as many push-ups and carried three times as much weight in order to prove that he did in fact have his heart in it. As he put in the work Bradley's confidence was more genuine and deserved, rather than being fueled by bravado. And he found that he liked this type of confidence much better.

Still, even with all of that there are still two sets of people he hadn't yet apologized to properly. His Gamma brothers and Max. They all still kept their distance from each other at the Gamma House. So much so that they haven't even held any parties since the X-Games passed. And Bradley hasn't come up with a proper way to apologize despite all of the sleepless nights he spent trying to think of how to do so.

And Max...Bradley knew that he had to apologize to him in the best way possible. He was the one he hurt the most, after all. Giving him so much grief ever since he turned down his offer to join the Gammas and nearly killing him and his father just to win a dumb trophy. That wasn't something you could just say 'my bad' and wash your hands of the matter. Whatever he did the senior knew it had to be genuine and come from the heart. He just wasn't sure how to go about it. Little did Bradley know, however, that an opportune chance at redemption was about to present itself to him.

As Bradley skated down the sidewalk he saw Max at a vending machine up ahead. He smiled brightly at seeing the Labradoodle's back and slowed his skateboard down before kicking it out from under his feet and catching it. Bradley then bridged the gap between him and the freshman and called out to him.

“Hey, Max!” Bradley called out, waving to the younger man as he walked up.

But as Max turned to face him Bradley stopped dead in his tracks. Something was...off about Max. He didn't seem like his usual self. He had bags under his eyes, the cheerful spark in his cheeks weren't there and he was dressed in all black. Granted it was still baggy like his usual attire but that was in a fun, sporty way. This type of baggy was like Max was trying to hide himself away.

“Hey.” Came the unenthusiastic, one word reply. Bradley blinked for a moment before recovering and giving a smile.

“Y-Yeah! Ahem, I saw you at the vending machine and just figured I could use a drink too. What did you get? I usually go for the vitamin water myself.” Bradley said as he tried to start a conversation. Max just shrugged.

“Haven't decided yet. I just put my money in. Now I don't know if I even want one anymore.” Max said as he looked at the vending machine with a tired expression. Alright – that certainly isn't a normal response from Max. But Bradley decided not to address that and continued.

“Well, if you don't mind I can pick on for you.” The Saluki offered with a smile. Again Max shrugged, and so Bradley decided to put his best foot forward and chose a ginger ale. He pressed the button and soon the fizzy drink popped out. “Here! This is a second favorite of mine when I don't feel like vitamin water. I honestly prefer ginger ale to most sodas. Not as heavy on the caffeine, you know?”

Bradley held out the can to Max, giving a small smile. Max turned to look at the can, and then at Bradley. It was then that Bradley got a good look at his face. His expression...it was so sad. So upset. So very unlike Max. He didn't like it. And it even looked like the Labradoodle was crying. Before the older canine could ask a question Max took the can and nodded.

“Yeah, I get whatcha mean. I have to go now.” Max said and slowly turned away as he started to walk off.

“Wait! Maybe we could hang out after school, later?” Bradley carefully asked. Max stopped and he looked over his shoulders to give a tired, fake smile.

“Yeah, later. Sure. See you around, Bradley.” And with that Max walked away.

Alright, now the senior was convinced that something was wrong with Max. He called him Bradley. His whole, proper first name. Not the abbreviation of Brad that he had grown accustomed to, and honestly liked to hear from Max. But the freshman didn't call him that on top of faking a smile. Something is definitely wrong. And Bradley Uppercrust the 3rd was not going to rest until he got to the bottom of this. Luckily, he knew exactly who to start asking for information...

As the day carried on Bradley sat in his last class of the day - evening history. However, he was only mildly paying attention to the actual lesson. His eyes were keenly focused on two specific classmates he shared the evening class with. Max's two best friends. The portly tuxedo cat named P.J., and the pothead terrier mix with the orange ginger hair named Bobby. Prior to now, the Saluki had no idea why his rival would hang around such a motley pair. Even with being a mixed breed Max was still several leagues above most of the people at Welig. And as he looks back on his abhorrent behavior Bradley realizes that that was another thing about Max that he was jealous of besides his innate skills. Max was still a pedigree breed like Bradley despite coming from such a humble background. Like he was perfect without even trying. And it made Bradley want to crush that perfection. But now he realizes that it wasn't that Max was perfect. He was just a genuine person who was comfortable in his own fur, and didn't go above and beyond to be more than what he was for other people. Bradley didn't think he had the freedom to do that, and his envy over this self-imposed boundary projected into unfounded anger towards the Labradoodle.

That's all changed now, though. And he wants to make it right. So he'll need the help of Max's two friends to figure out just what has made Max be so gloomy, figuring cheering him up would be a step in the right direction. The bell rang as it signified the end of the history class and the teacher bid the students farewell as he and the rest of the occupants in the room gathered their things and began to leave. Bradley quickly packed up his belongings and watched as P.J. and Bobby both left out of the room. Bradley briskly walked down the stairs from the top row he sat at and quickly caught up with the two in the hallway.

“Hey, you two! Wait up!” The senior called out. Bobby and P.J. stopped and turned around to face Bradley, each one looking incredibly confused that he of all people was approaching them.

“Forsooth, is it indeed the third Uppercrust of his name that approaches us? Or should I not have eaten that old slice of cheesecake yesterday?” Bobby asked as he pushed up his sunglasses to get a proper look at proper look.

“Yeah, Bobby. I think it is.” P.J. said to his friend as he regarded Bradley with a look of surprise and slight apprehension.

“Good evening, gentlemen. I hope I'm not taking up your valuable time. But I needed to speak with you.” Bradley explained.

“Us? You wanna shoot the breeze with me and Peej, Bradley boy? Color me surprised. But don't color me purple. It doesn't do a thing for me.” Bobby said, and Bradley couldn't quite tell if he was being entirely serious, joking or a bit of both.

“Why do you want to talk to us? I thought freshmen were beneath you.” P.J. said sternly. He was clearly the most on guard of the two and didn't totally trust the senior coming up to them. Bradley expected this and steeled himself as he explained.

“Yeah, well, I guess you could say I've come a long way in a short time. Or at least I'm trying to. Sorry can't begin to cover everything I did, I know. And even if I did everything to make amends, I know I'm not entitled to your forgiveness. But I need your help. You two are the only ones who can help me with this.” Bradley stated – his words strong and sincere.

Both feline and canine regarded Bradley with shocked expressions. They definitely weren't expecting to hear all of that from the senior. And, in all truth, not even Bradley himself thought he was going to speak that candidly. But he was able to say it without missing a beat. And it made Bradley feel proud of himself for being able to do so. After a while P.J. finally spoke up.

“That was...really mature, Bradley. And introspective. I can respect that.” P.J. replied with a smile.

“Major respect! I guess we're buds now, huh, Bradster?” Bobby asked as he walked over and wrapped an arm over Bradley's shoulders, then dug out a half-eaten bag of nacho cheese puffs. “Wanna commemorate this with some artificially processed cheese dusted products?”

“Uh...I had some on the way to class, but thanks.” Bradley said with an awkward smile as he moved out from under Bobby's arm, who just shrugged and proceeded to gobble up the rest of the cheese puffs. “So, getting down to brass tacks, I did want to ask you both about something important.”

“What is it?” P.J. asked.

“It's about Max. I was saw him earlier today, and he didn't look all that great. Did something happen to him?” Bradley asked.

At this, the two friends shared a look of concern and uneasiness. Clearly Bradley hit the nail on the head. The two shuffled about in an awkward manner, obviously trying to find the words. Then P.J. seemed to nod in silent agreement to Bobby, as if saying he could tell him, and the pothead then looked to Bradley. A rare focused, serious look on his face.

“Well dude...the problem with Max has to do with the heart.” Bobby slowly started.

“He did look like he was crying. Did something happen to a family member? Wait. His dad, Mr. Goof...he's not...?” Bradley trailed off, a horrified look of question on his face.

“No, no, no! He's still alive and well.” P.J. immediately clarified.

“Oh yeah! The OG Goof is living large with his larger-than-life personality, and that hottie librarian is now his newest main squeeze.” Bobby added.

“Whew, thank God. I was honestly worried for a moment. I know I have to apologize to him, too. So what happened that's made Max so depressed?” The Saluki asked.

Again, Bobby looked to P.J. As if he was asking if it was alright to tell the senior. P.J. nodded and Bobby looked to Bradley to continue.

Picture it, Bradster. Welig University. The Bean Scene, last Thursday. Me, P.J., Vicky and Maximilian were all hanging out. Minding our own righteous business and reveling in each other's company. Then he walks in.” Bobby explained, holding his hands up like he was imitating the frames of a TV screen. And as he said 'he' his eyebrows narrowed into a glare behind his purple spectacles and his fists clenched.

“He?” Bradley repeated, looking to P.J. for an answer.

“Some guy who works at the campus store. His name's Eric Covington.” The tuxedo cat explained, his ears turned back in displeasure as he crossed his arms at even saying the name.

“Eric...Covington? Oh God.” Bradley groaned in a tone of dismay as he ran a worried hand through his hair.

“What? You know 'em?” Bobby asked.

Not by choice. He was a sophomore at the time and pledged to the Gammas last year. I felt like it was a mistake just letting him apply and found out I was right. The hard way.” Bradley explained.

“What'd he do?” P.J. asked.

“The bastard tried to roofie some freshmen girls that he sneaked into a party. Suffice to say he was the shortest pledge we ever had – and I took great pleasure in reminding him that you get the horns when you mess with the Gamma Bull. I thought he got expelled. But I should have figured a weasel like him would con his way into staying around.” Bradley stated with an irritated shake of his head.

“God, seriously?! I wish we had known about that at the time. It sure explains why things turned out the way they did.” P.J. said in a solemn tone.

“What happened? What did that cretin do to Max?” Bradley asked with a worried glare.

“The dude was all sleazy smiles. Really laying it on thick to Max. He talked about skating, how he liked the same pop songs as Max and how he was in the same major as him. He even said he liked dark chocolate like Max did. Dark chocolate! Dollars to donuts the dude never even knew what the flavor was, lead alone tasted it before.” Bobby said with a disbelieving scoff at the memory.

“That sounds like him. Saying what people want to hear. Then what?” Bradley further inquired.

“They set up a date. Even though our radars kind of set off around the guy we didn't see any red flags right away. So we just thought he was a showy type of person – and let it slide. Plus, Max was so happy then. He hasn't been on a date since junior high.” P.J. replied.

“Seriously? A guy like Max hasn't dated for that long?” Bradley asked, totally surprised. Not that Max came off as a playboy – but even he could admit how fun and kind he was to be around. And he's seen people flirt with him. It's a wonder he didn't have the whole campus chomping at the bit.

“Do not let his free spirit fool you, Bradley boy. Maximilian is a romantic at heart. He wants to have little date nights at a cozy restaurant, be spontaneous and make fun memories with someone he can forge a long-term relationship with and grow old together. He only had the one girlfriend back when we were juniors – but after high school she moved across state. Now they keep in touch as friends, but Maxie still holds out the hope that he'll find the one.” Bobby explained, finishing his words with a little heart shape he made with his fingers.

This made Bradley blink in surprise, and he pondered on the new information. This was...surprisingly cute news to learn. He never pegged Max as the romantic type. At the same time, however, it did suit him. He was a sentimental sort after all. He cared deeply for his friends and father. Bradley shouldn't be too surprised that he'd give his heart and soul to a significant other. Now he couldn't get the image of Max being a little do-all homemaker out of his head.

“He'd probably wear those silly polka dot aprons, too...” Bradley trailed off to himself in fond amusement.

“Huh?” P.J. asked, not quite catching the words and the senior fought off the blush that tried to rise to his cheeks and waved it off.

“N-Nothing! Just thinking aloud. So, what happened after the date?” Bradley asked.

For a third time, the friends have soured expressions. And these ones looked particularly disgusted as they recalled what had apparently happened before P.J. sighed and spoke.

“They had a date set up for Saturday. And Max was excited at first. But then...Covington started to get, well, pushy.” P.J. said.

In that moment Bradley felt a sharp pang in his heart. Like a foreshadowing sense telling him that he knew what he was going to hear next, and he was not going to like it. But he asked anyway.

“Pushy how?” Was the cautious question that the Saluki managed to ask.

“The guy turned mad creepy! Talkin' about how 'they could skip dinner and just get to know each other personally'. Or would send texts saying stuff like 'how he wondered what Max's body was like under such baggy clothes'. And any time they'd meet in public he'd try to get in a kiss, and Max would turn into that guy from that one sci-fi movie. Dodging his crusty lips like a hail of bullets.” Bobby explained with a disgusted expression.

“Max said he was a little put-off by it, but figured Covington was just overeager. He even told him that he wanted to talk and hang out for a while first before they did anything majorly intimate.” P.J. added.

“...Then what happened?” Bradley asked in a cool, calm voice. Too cool, and definitely too calm. But the tuxedo cat continued.

“Covington turned kind of frosty after Max told him that, but said he understood. Then Saturday came – the night of their date. Max waited at the skate park where the guy said they'd meet. And he waited, waited and kept waiting. After a whole hour and a half Max finally called him to ask where he was. And he...” P.J. paused, struggling to say what was clearly the hardest part.

“He what?” Bradley asked in a harsh tone. Not harsh towards P.J., but harsh at the notion of whatever that bastard English Foxhound did.

“There was...someone else in the background with Covington. They were laughing...and it sounded like it came from his dorm room. He told Max that he 'didn't feel like talking first' and got someone who was 'less uptight'. Said he'd 'call Max some other time'. Then he hung up.” P.J. finished up.

“Maximilian was just devastated. He came back to the dorm walking, didn't even skate. And when he came in the first thing he did was burst into tears. Took us the whole night to calm him down. Not even Mr. Creamsicle could cheer him up.” Bobby said with a sad shake of his head.

“So, that's the story. Max has been pretty blue ever...s-since.” P.J. said, but his last word had a slight tremble as he turned to look at Bradley. Bobby looked at the senior as well and saw exactly what made his friend's voice quiver with fear.

Bradley's face was like thunder. He didn't look upset. He didn't look angry. He didn't look mad. He looked incensed. The kind of face someone makes when they only feel undiluted rage coursing through their bloodstream. The kind of face that people describe in exaggeration, what with veins popping out and pupils seemingly turning red and the like. But there wasn't a hint of exaggeration in his face. Bradley looked like a man contemplating murder. And his past malicious self was beginning to resurface as he thought of various forms of retribution. Like kicking Eric in the stomach while wearing his cleats. Grabbing him by the ears and slamming his face into the ground. Repeatedly. Or better yet – taking his very own skateboard and cracking the real titanium wheels and Canadian hard maple wood right over his stupid head. And all of that was still less than what Eric Covington deserved. He should feel pain. He should suffer. He hurt Max so much he didn't even skate and...!

...Max. Maximilian Goof. The only person who believed Bradley could change. The only person who thought he had the potential to be a good person. And Bradley was more than sure he wouldn't have even attempted to be good if Max didn't say he could be. So he can't go and ruin all of his progress. Not after Max expressed his faith in him. He had to be better than this. Not let his temper make him do something else stupid. Even if the reason is more than justified. So Bradley took in a deep meditative breath, held it for a short while and then slowly breathed out. He'll deal with Covington the right way later. Right now Max was his priority. His resolve set the senior looked at both freshmen with a calmer yet determined face.

“First of all, I appreciate you both sharing this with me. Max shouldn't have ever experienced that. But I intend to make it right.” Bradley stated, which made both the terrier mix and tuxedo cat smile.

“Wow, Bradster. You really have changed. But what are you gonna do?” Bobby asked.

Bradley thought for a moment until his eyes spotted the promo board just to the left wall of the hallway they were in. The Saluki walked past the freshmen to examine the board better as he read over each and every flier. At last, he saw something that piqued his interest and made him grin in triumph.

“Aha! This is perfect!” Bradley exclaimed before running back to Bobby and P.J. “Did Max say anything about going out this coming Saturday?”

“No, not that he told us.” P.J. replied with a shake of his head.

“Excellent. Keep it that way, and don't let him make any plans for Saturday. Get him to do any homework you all get early, too, so he'll have plenty of time.” Bradley said.

“Time for what?” Bobby asked to which Bradley grinned and wagged his finger in a secretive manner.

“Come now, gentleman. It's not a surprise if I share all the details. All you have to do is keep Max's schedule free for Saturday. Got it?” Bradley asked. The canine and feline looked to each other before smiling in equal determination.

“You can count on us!” P.J. exclaimed.

“Operation Cheer Up Maxie is a GO! Awooo!” Bobby howled in excitement and the two friends high-fived.

Bradley couldn't help but smile at the two. Now he was starting to see why Max hung out with Bobby and P.J. They may not be the cream of the crop, but they have a lot of heart. After giving one last thanks Bradley hurried off to the Gamma House. He had some important calls to make before Saturday arrived!

Three days later...

Before Max even realized it, the hump day of Wednesday had passed, and it was now Saturday. He honestly wasn't feeling keen on the weekend day, though. It still reminded him of the awful experience of Eric standing him up. The Labradoodle couldn't believe he fell hook, line and sinker for such a creep. Talk about a hard learned lesson. However, Max was working on feeling better and not being as depressed. Doing little things to distract himself. But he attributed most of the credit for being distracted to his best friends. Although Max did find it a bit strange how they were trying so hard to keep him distracted.

For the past three days they've been doing anything and everything to keep Max busy. They were even keen on doing their homework early instead of procrastinating it to the weekend for a cram session like they often do. Max asked Vicky what she thought was up with them, but the Abyssinian poet just shrugged and said it must be a full moon. At any rate Max did appreciate how his friends were working so hard to cheer him up. But still...

“What's up, Maxie?” Bobby asked as he looked over his shoulder and away from the game that he was playing against P.J. as he heard his other friend sigh.

“It's nothing, Bobby. I guess I'm just bummed because I have nothing to do on a Saturday night.” Max said as he played with Mr. Creamsicle's arms.

“Really? Well, that does normally bite, dude. But who knows? Maybe your plans will change when you least expect it.” P.J. said, smiling to himself as he knew the true meaning behind his words.

“Yeah, Maximilian! Someday your prince will be in effect and whisk you away!” Bobby added, also smiling at the hidden meaning. Of course, Max just thought the two were joking and lightly laughed as he turned on his back and held his teddy bear up as he lightly tossed it up and caught it.

“Yeah, sure. And said prince will knock his manicured hand on my door with a rhythmic rapping.” Max said.

Just then, as if on cue, there came a rhythmic rapping on the friends' door. The sudden sound startled Max into setting up from his bed, looking at the door in shock as he held Mr. Creamsicle close to him.

“Weird. I wonder who's at the door?” P.J. asked, trying his hardest to seem like he was just as surprised as Max despite the tuxedo cat knowing exactly who was on the other side of that door.

“Yeah. What an auspicious event to occur that we totally didn't anticipate.” Bobby said and P.J. elbowed the terrier mix in the side.

Max blinked at his friends in confusion before turning back to the door, hearing the rhythmic knocking once again. Well, there was only one way to find out who exactly was knocking. Max sat his childhood teddy on his bed and stood up to go unlock the door before opening it. The Labradoodle started to greet the person, but stopped short and felt his mouth drop open when he saw who it was. The one and only Bradley Uppercrust the 3rd was at his door. He stood like a perfect mannequin, and he looked just as immaculately dressed. Black dress slacks, polished brown calfskin loafers, a dark orange long-sleeved Polo and his hair was slicked back. In short Bradley was truly dressed to impress. But why show off here?

“Br-Bradley? What are you doing here?” Max asked, who was so surprised he used the Saluki's full name. At this Bradley's confident smile widened and he gave an over-the-top bow to the younger man.

“Good evening, Maximilian. I heard through the grapevine that you had, shall we say, an unpleasant experience last Saturday.” Bradley said.

“Last Saturday? What...” Max started to ask until it hit him what happened last Saturday, and knowing he only told two certain people about that day he whipped his head around to glare at Bobby and P.J. in suspicion, both of whom just looked away and casually played their game as if they knew nothing.

“Now, now. Don't make such an angry face, Max. You've already marred it with tears, which were honestly wasted on certain people...But! I want to make it right by taking you out on a true date.” Bradley stated, quickly shifting to the actual point of his visit before that ugly side of him focused on a certain English Foxhound for too long. His words thankfully caught Max's attention and made him look back at Bradley in surprise once more.

“You...You wanna take me out on a date? Right now?” Max asked.

“But of course! The night is young, and there's no reason why we can't take full advantage of it.” Bradley paused, dropping his bravado for a moment to genuinely smile at the younger man. “Besides, I want you to actually have fun this Saturday. I...want to be the one who makes it fun for you, Max. If you'll allow me the honor of doing so.”

And like a magician, Bradley gave a flourish of his hand and pulled out a pink rose that he presented to Max. It wasn't as grandiose as the bouquet of pale peach roses Max gave him months prior, but this pretty little pink rose carried everything in Bradley's heart that he couldn't say himself. Among its many meanings pink roses were famously known for symbolizing appreciation, admiration and affectionate love. It made sense to get such a flower. Bradley was appreciative of how Max believed in him despite his misdeeds, he admired Max's character...and the more the Saluki came to terms with his own feelings over everything, the more he began to see that he had grown quite the sizable crush on Max. He didn't dare say it now as he didn't want to put that kind of pressure on his former rival. Tonight, his goal was one thing and one thing only. Making the Labradoodle happy.

Max blinked once at Bradley, then blinked a second time at the pink rose. P.J. and Bobby sat in the background watching the whole scene with bated breath. For a moment Bradley feared he was going to get soundly rejected...until a small smile tugged at Max's lips. It wasn't his usual big, dopey smile. But it was definitely better than the fake one from three days ago. Max reached up and gently wrapped his fingers around the stem of the pink rose, his fingers brushing on top of Bradley's, as he looked at the senior to address him.

“Sure. Could you give me fifteen minutes to get dressed?” Max asked in a somewhat tired voice, but it held a tone of life. Bradley sighed in relief inside his mind before he flashed his perfectly white teeth in a huge smile.

“Absolutely! I'll be downstairs in the lobby.” Bradley said, then let go of the rose as he waved to Max before leaving.

The Labradoodle waved back and slowly closed the door, then braced himself against it as his eyes grew wide from the rush of the moment that just now hit. Still holding the pink rose like his life depended on it. Then he turned to his friends.

“Guys...?” Max tentatively asked.

“Yeah Max?” Bobby and P.J. asked back, their faces almost near splitting from the big grins they had on their faces.

“...Can you help me get ready?” Max asked again.

And like lighting the terrier mix and tuxedo cat were styling Max to the nines.

Downstairs, Bradley was pacing about in the lobby of the freshmen dorms with a nervously happy expression. To some students going in and out, it made them regard him with concerned and even weird looks. But Bradley didn't care. He actually had a date with Max! That's all that he cared about. He hoped that Max would enjoy what he had planned. While he doesn't come off as hard to please – he still wanted the younger man to have fun.

“Maybe I should ask Tank and the guys what they think. Just so I can get a second...” Bradley took out his fiery red Nokia 3310 to call the frat house, but then stopped when he remembered that he still wasn't on speaking terms with his Gamma brothers. Least of all Tank. “Oh. Right. That's another bridge I need to mend.”

For a moment, the excitement of the date was replaced with feelings of regret and sadness. In the months that he's worked on improving himself and his relationships with others Bradley really hasn't extended an olive branch to Tank, Kevin, Shades, Federico, Slouch or Boris. Every day at the Gamma Mu Mu House they all do their own thing and go out of their way to act like Bradley doesn't exist. Even going as far as leaving the kitchen or the living room when Bradley would enter. He was glad that his room had it's own bathroom because that would make things even more awkward. Bradley didn't realize how much he thrived on interacting with his Gamma brothers and spending time with them until they all actively ignored him after the X-Games. It was only until after he made the biggest mistake of his life that he realized that the were more than just trained teammates or minions. They were his friends. But now there was a heavy emphasis on the were. Bradley wondered if perhaps his relationships with Tank and the others was too far gone for him to even fix...

“Calm down, Bradley. One hurdle at a time. If there is a chance, I'll cross that bridge with the Gammas when I get there. Tonight, my objective is cheering Max up.” Bradley said to himself, lightly smacking his face to bring himself back to focus.

And as if on cue, Bradley heard the distinct 'ding' of the elevator door behind him and soon heard Max's voice.

“Sorry that I kept you waiting. My hair was being stubborn.” Max spoke behind him.

“Oh, no worries! I'm sure that you look...” Bradley stopped short as he turned around to face Max and was greeted by a very breathtaking sight. “...good.”

Max looked more than good, though. He looked utterly fetching. He's never seen the Labradoodle in anything but his baggy clothes or his skate gear. So it really took Bradley by surprise to see that Max actually had a toned figure. His hips were a bit wider than what you may see with someone of his physique, but somehow the unique shape of his body fit Max very well. He was wearing light grey chino pants, a short-sleeved burnt gold V-neck shirt, brown sandals with green accents and a light grey vest with burnt gold and green leaf accents along the sides. But the real draw was his hair. Max said that it was being stubborn – but the final result was well worth it. Just like Bradley didn't know that Max had a figure, he didn't know how long his hair actually was. Did it grow in such a short time? Either way it looked amazing, his black tresses combed and pulled back into a low bun. He also left some softly curled bangs out which hung in his face. And to top it all off he even had the pink rose Bradley gave him pinned into the lapel of his vest.

So yeah. Maximilian Goof clearly knew how to clean up when he wanted to.

“Heh, heh. Thanks. I wasn't sure how dressy I should be, so I went with semi-formal. I hope this is okay.” Max said as he fiddled with the hemline of his vest.

“More than okay. You're stunning, Max.” Bradley said with a smile as he walked over to Max. This made the younger man smile and his cheeks turned a shade of pink just a color off from the rose in his lapel.

“Thanks. I'm glad it's alright. And even happier that I went casual with...well, you know who, instead of dressing up for him.” Max replied.

Bradley nodded in understanding, hiding the smug joy he felt at this news. It made him happy to know that Max didn't waste time preening to impress a sleaze like Eric Covington. And it made him doubly happy to know that he got to see Max in this gorgeous form and not said sleaze.

“No sense in putting pearls before swine, after all. Shall we?” Bradley asked as held out his hand to Max. The Labradoodle smiled and accepted the hand.

“Totally.” Max spoke and Bradley led him out of the lobby of the freshman dorms and out to the parking lot.

Outside in the parking lot was the most gorgeous sports car Max had ever laid eyes on. It was a Porsche 911 with a striking cherry red color. Max had only seen such cars in movies or magazines, so it really brought a smile to his face to see one up close. Bradley again felt a certain smugness at seeing Max's expression. He was responsible for that smile, and he's only getting started.

“Dazzling, wouldn't you say? A dealer was going to send her off for scrap over an engine that could easily be replaced and some bodywork that took an hour at most to do. I paid three times what he would have gotten for a scrap sale and gave her the TLC she needed, including some upgrades.” Bradley explained.

“Thank God you did. I couldn't imagine something this beautiful being crushed.” Max said as he tentatively ran his hand from the roof of the car to the hood where he stood at the passenger's side.

“Neither could I.” The Saluki muttered, more to himself than giving an answer as he looked at Max.

He had no idea the double meaning his words had. But now's not the time to think of that. Bradley smiled and used his key fob to open the doors. Max took the signal and opened the passenger door to get inside while Bradley entered the driver's side. And with a smooth rev of the Porsche's engine, the pair drove off. Bradley had the windows rolled down and let the winds from outside blow into their faces. He looked over to Max and smiled as he marveled at the view of the lake as they drove along the road. Not to mention his bangs were flowing from the rush of wind that made him look so cute. And Max when turned to look at Bradley with a curious smile he looked even cuter.

“So where are we going?” Max asked.

“First, dinner. How do you feel about seafood?” Bradley asked back.

“I don't get to eat it a lot, but I do like it. Especially shellfish.” The Labradoodle replied.

“Then you'll love this little place.” Bradley said as he turned down another road.

Max looked ahead as Bradley drove them to what looked to be a restaurant between the beach and the boardwalk up ahead. There was light green neon signage that said Cod's Kiss Diner, and next to the signage was a neon grey cartoon fish wearing an apron and chef's hat while sitting in a skillet and giving a wink and making a kiss blowing gesture.

“Wow, I don't think I've been to this place before.” The Labradoodle said as Bradley slowed the car down to park in front of the restaurant.

“It's a great little family seafood restaurant. My parents and I used to come here every autumn and spring. That's when they get the best catches for food.” Bradley said as he made a nostalgic smile at the sign.

“Seriously? I didn't think you'd like diner places like this. No offense!” Max stated, holding his hands up in a show of peace which made Bradley laugh.

“None taken. Most people think the same. But when my family moved here this is where we'd always go when I was in high school, whether it was after I had classes or after my parents wrapped up business.” Bradley said.

“That sounds really nice. Do you guys still come here?” Max asked.

“Not as often as we'd used to, but we always make sure to take one day out of our time every spring and autumn to come here. Unfortunately things have been pretty busy for all of us between mother and father handling new clients in Uppercrust Shipping, and me with college.” Bradley explained with a shrug, then looked to Max with a smile. “So, I'm glad I could come here with you Max.”

This made Max smile and he gave a happy nod.

“Me too, Bradley. Hope your parents won't be upset that I broke up you guys' tradition.” Max said.

“Not at all! It's fine. Besides, I think they'll be happy to know I brought someone special here.” Bradley said, muttering the last part to himself. But that time Max heard him.

“What'd you say, man? I didn't catch that last part.” Max said. Bradley barely fought back the blush of embarrassment at almost being caught when he turned to the younger man and dismissively waved his hand.

“N-Nothing! Just thinking out loud. Anyway, let's eat!” Bradley exclaimed, quickly changing the subject as he stepped out of the car. Max blinked in confusion before shrugging and exiting the cherry red Porsche as well.

The pair walked up the short flight of stairs and Bradley led the way inside, pushing open the door which made the little bell above it ring. The first thing that struck Max were the delicious smells. A mix of fried, steamed and baked fish, the savory vinegar scent of coleslaw, a rustic hint of craft beer and the oh so comforting aroma of garlic butter. The next thing that drew in his attention was the decor. It was a cross between a cozy picnic set-up what with the checked designs of the tablecloths and the wooden picnic benches and New England aesthetics with the tilt window frames with the elaborate light green seashell designs on them and the pressback oak wood dining chairs. There was even a statue of the restaurant's mascot standing to the left of the foyer with a hand gesturing to the dining area – as if telling entering patrons to come right in. And in the background soft jazz music could be heard through speakers. Max could see why Bradley and his family came here so often. He may just call his dad and Miss Sylvia to come here for his next break.

“Wow, this is a really rad place.” Max said as he marveled at the simple yet charming decor.

“If you like the look, you'll love the food.” The senior said, then turned to look into the restaurant and took in a big breath before calling out. “AHOY, CAP'N AND CREW! REQUESTING PERMISSION TO COME ABOARD!”

Max was startled by the sudden call Bradley made, not expecting that at all. And he was further surprised when someone responded from behind the counter inside the diner.

“AHOY, LANDLUBBER! PERMISSION TO COME ABOARD GRANTED!” Called out the boisterous, deep voice of an older man. The next thing Max knew about five people came out from the kitchen.

It was a family of water monitor lizards consisting of an older man with a long brunette beard that was starting to grey and wearing a chef's apron over a plaid shirt and jeans, a woman about his age who had shoulder length blonde hair that was turning grey wearing a lovely purple sun dress, two men who looked a bit older than Bradley and Max with one having blonde hair with brunette bangs and the other having brunette hair with a single blonde streak and both had the classic beach jock aesthetic to them and one young lady who had brunette hair on her head and a blonde plume along her tail who had a preppy style to her attire. The Saluki smiled at the group and approached the older man with open arms.

“Craig, you old leather wallet! How's it going?” Bradley asked as he went over and hugged the older man, Craig apparently, who happily hugged him back.

“I may be an old leather wallet, young pup, but I'm still attached to myself! And that's all that matters.” Craig stated with a hardy laugh.

“Can't say I disagree. And Loretta; enchanting as always.” Bradley said as he turned to the older woman and took her hand to kiss the back of it.

“And you're quick to charm as always, Bradley.” Loretta said with a grin as she patted Bradley on the shoulder.

“Bradley bro! It's been ages!” Exclaimed the water monitor lizard who was predominantly blonde as he held his hand up to which Bradley gave him a high five.

“So it has, Carl. But I'm sure you can still serve a volleyball from a sky scrapper height even after all the time that's passed.” Bradley complimented to which Carl flexed his muscles.

“Course I can! Just stop by the beach any time and I'll prove it to ya.” Carl said with a wide, toothy smile.

“Only after he hits the waves with me like he's been promising all this year. I haven't forgotten about that, y'know!” Said the water monitor lizard who was predominantly brunette as he put Bradley in a playful headlock.

“I didn't think you would, Kyle. And I swear the next big wave to come is ours. Just don't expect me to go easy on you.” Bradley replied with a grin as he playfully punched the scaled arm which prompted Kyle to let him go. Just then the preppy dressed, young lady approached him with a bright smile.

“Bradley! I'm so happy to see you! How's college? How did the X-Games go? Oh wait, you lost. Did you get hurt really bad when you got thrown into that blimp? You don't have any bruises so I guess you're feeling better. Are and your family going to come to my sweet sixteen next month? I got a really pretty dress for it! Oh, and I also got an A+ on my algebra test and...!” Bradley gently covered the younger female's mouth as he chuckled at her hyper talkativeness.

Breathe, Antoinette. You'll pass out again. College is fine, and yes I did in fact lose at the X-Games. But I think I came out the winner in a more profound sense. I only got a broken ankle and a sprained wrist from the blimp toss. But they've both since completely healed. Father, mother, grandfather, my sister and I wouldn't miss your birthday for the world. And I know my sister will love to see your new dress especially. And congratulations on your A+. You deserve it after all the hard work you've spent studying.” The Saluki said, addressing all of the things Antoinette said and asked one by one before letting go of her mouth. Max was amazed he heard all of that as he only just caught the first two questions. And once she was free to speak again the reptilian teenager smiled again and hugged Bradley.

“That's great news, Bradley! We're so glad you're here.” Antoinette said.

“And I'm glad to come here again, Annie.” Bradley replied as he hugged her back.

Max observed the whole scene with, at first, a shocked expression. He's seen Bradley be charming and sociable in the past but that was more for keeping up appearances. His interactions and responses didn't come off as genuine back then. But right now? Max saw nothing but genuineness. In this moment it felt like he was seeing the real Bradley Uppercrust the 3rd with his own eyes – which made his shocked expression turn into a fond smile. He had to admit, he rather liked this side of Bradley. He liked this side a lot...

“Oh my, Craig! We've completely forgotten our manners! We didn't even greet this young man here.” Loretta's voice spoke in shame, which snapped the Labradoodle out of his internal assessment.

“Sake's alive, we're sorry about that boyo. It's just been so long since we've seen Bradley is all.” Craig explained, walking up to Max and holding out his hand. “Nice ta meet'cha! We're the Donnelly family. I'm Craig, this here's my gorgeous wife Loretta, my tough as nails twin sons Carl and Kyle and my sweet but mighty little girl Antoinette.”

“Hello!/Sup, bro!/Hiya!” The rest of the Donnelly's all greeted in their own way.

“Nice to meet you all, Mr. Donnelly.” Max replied with a smile as he shook the older man's hand.

“Oh please, son! If Bradley brought ya here then there's no need for mister. Just call me Craig.” The aged reptile said with a hardy laugh which made Max smile. He couldn't help but think that he and his own dad would become fast friends on account of their similar dispositions.

“Everyone, this is Max Goof. He's the one I told you all about.” Bradley said, stepping over to stand beside Max.

Max wondered what Bradley meant when he said that. But based on the surprised looks the Donnelly's shared with each other and then seeing how their faces split into mischievous, gleeful smiles it was either something good or there's an inside joke Max isn't savvy to.

Oh...” The water monitor lizards all spoke in sing-song voices as they looked from Max to Bradley.

“Please don't make this weird. I just want to introduce you all properly.” Bradley stated, and Max could have sworn he saw a slight tinge of color on the senior's cheeks. Was he chilly from the cold winds?

“Of course, ma boy! There's nothing weird about having dinner with a friend.” Craig replied with a huge smile.

“Or boy-friend.” Carl and Kyle spoke in teasing unison to which Loretta smacked both of her sons upside their heads with her tail.

“Antoinette, take Bradley and Max to the table with a view of the lake. That's the coziest, most scenic seat we got. Perfect for two people to be in.” Craig spoke with a hinting wriggle of his eyebrows to Bradley.

“Craig! Less chattering, more cooking!” Loretta scolded as she grabbed her husband by the tail and dragged him off to the kitchen. But as she passed by Bradley she whispered to him. “For the record, deary, I do wholeheartedly approve of this little doll.”

Bradley gave Loretta a look that was a cross between annoyance and embarrassment but said nothing otherwise as he watched the missus drag Craig away with the twins following.

“Right this way, gentlemen.” Antoinette said, giving a curtsy to the two canines as she led them to their table.

Max and Bradley were brought to the table that Craig had instructed they'd be given, and it did indeed provide a spectacular view of the lake. And the waning gibbous moon gave off just enough night light to provide an ambient glow upon the water's surface. Ever the gentleman, Bradley was quick to pull Max's chair out for him to sit first. This made the freshman smile and he couldn't help the blush come to his face as he sat down and allowed Bradley to push his seat to the table before taking his own seat.

“So Max, whaddya feeling for? Clam chowder? Fried shrimp? Tuna steak? Anything fish related, Craig can whip it up.” Bradley said as he listed off each option.

“Hmm...they all sound really good. I can't decide. What do you often get here?” Max asked. Bradley hummed in thought for a moment before smiling as he turned to Antoinette.

“Two of the usual, Antoinette. A pink lemonade for Max and apple cider for me.” The Saluki said to the reptilian teenager.

“Right away, Bradley!” Antoinette said as she gave a cheery salute, giving a curtsy once more to Max and then heading off to the kitchen.

“What's the usual?” Max asked with a curious smile.

“It's a surprise.” Bradley said with a wink. “So, what do you think?”

“This is a really cool place! I wish I'd known about it sooner. And the Donnelly's are nice, too. Sounds like you've known them for a long time.” Max said.

“Oh yeah, we all go way back. It was actually my grandfather who came to know them first. Then he introduced my father to them when he was a kid, and later when him and mother dated in college they worked for Craig for a few summers until they moved after graduating.” Bradley explained.

“Wow. That's so cool how you have family friends like that. Makes me think of my dad's two best friends. And honestly they're more like uncles to me.” Max replied.

“You really do have a strong sense of family, Max. I admire that.” Bradley said with a kind smile.

“Heh, thanks. Honestly even though I wanted to make a name for myself without my dad...I can't not love him. Not care about my family. Immediate, extended and family friends alike. It's just part of who I am.” Max said he looked out to the lake.

“Well, it certainly adds to your character.” Bradley replied as he looked out at the lake with Max. It's been far too long since he's gotten to just sit down and see that beautiful view.

“Hey, speaking of character...what was with that reaction from the Donnelly's when you told them I was the one you were talking about?” Max asked.

Bradley snapped his head around to look at the younger male and inwardly cursed. Damn it to Hell, the Saluki thought. He had hoped that little scene slipped by Max. But of course he would be especially observant in that moment. But right now...he couldn't tell Max the whole truth of what the Donnelly's reaction meant. He couldn't tell Max what he really meant to him. At least not yet.

“Well...I told them about how you...were a driving force to me becoming the person I am now.” Bradley replied. It wasn't a total lie. He just wasn't going to explain how deep that driving force went.

“What? Being less of an asshole?” Max halfheartedly joked with a lopsided grin which made Bradley laugh.

“Pretty much, yeah! I'm not going to act like I was ever America's Sweetheart. My family and our servants can certainly attest to that.” Bradley said, then his cheery smile turned more serious. “But seriously Max. After the X-Games, after you came to the hospital to visit me with those roses, that was a turning point for me. It truly was. I told my parents about it. Craig and his family. Some of my favorite professors, even. You changed me in a lot of ways. And I...I'm grateful for that. So, thank you.”

Max looked at Bradley with wide eyes. This profound confession was not something he expected to hear today. And Bradley looked so candid as he spoke. So honest, so vulnerable. Max saw not a glimmer of deceit in his eyes nor did he hear a tone of lying in his voice. He really was grateful to Max. After all of this sunk in the Labradoodle gave a kind smile.

“You're welcome, Bradley. But you should give yourself more credit. I just said a few words that anyone else could have said. You put in the work.” Max said.

“Yeah. I guess I did put in the work.” Bradley agreed with nod. Just then Antoinette came over with a large tray in her hands.

“Sorry for the wait, gentlemen! Papa wanted to make sure this spread came out perfect!” Antoinette cheerily stated as she sat down the tray with their dinner and drinks. “Viola~! The famous usual of Cod's Kiss Diner. New England style lobster rolls in brioche buns with garlic butter for dipping, cucumber tomato salad with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing and macaroni and cheese! And of course pink lemonade for Max, and your apple cider here Bradley.”

“Wow! What a meal!” Max exclaimed in joy as he felt his mouth water. The senior smiled widely at Max's reaction and turned to nod at Antoinette.

“Thanks a lot, Annie. Tell Craig that he's outdone himself.” Bradley said.

“I sure will! And I hope you'll really enjoy this, Max. This is Bradley's favorite meal.” Antoinette said.

“If this tastes as good as it looks, I can see why.” The freshman replied.

“Oh yeah! It's super tasty. As a matter of fact, Bradley only eats this on special occasions. And only when he's eating with special people.” Antoinette said, putting an emphasis on the word 'special' as she grinned knowingly at Bradley.

“Antoinette, I do believe I hear your parents calling you.” Bradley said with a tight smile but his eyes held an unspoken warning. The reptilian teenager held her hands up in a mock show of surrender as she skipped off to the kitchen, giggling all the way.

“Why was she focusing so much on the word special?” Max asked with a confused face.

“Who knows? Probably a teenager thing.” Bradley lied with a shrug. Max didn't need to know the hints Antoinette was trying to lay out. Not until he told him how he felt, at least.

So the pair ate. Predictably Max greatly enjoyed the food. Bradley discovered that he was a vocal eater, making audible mmm's after every other bite and even outright saying 'delicious' as he was chewing. From anyone else the Saluki would've rolled his eyes in annoyance and view this kind of behavior as childish. But from Max, he smiled at the endearing genuineness of his reactions. Even when he ate he would smile. It was the kind of sight that would make a man smitten. And oh how smitten Bradley was. When he suggested Max try spreading some of the macaroni and cheese on his lobster roll along with a bit of the cucumber and tomato salad, his eyes widened in amazement at the mix of flavors in his mouth. Max enthusiastically nodded his head in approval as he gave that trademark big, dopey smile as he dug into the cheesy seafood and veggie mix. And as he drank the fresh homemade pink lemonade that he knew Loretta made with all the love in the world Bradley could have sworn he saw the younger male's loppy ears flap a bit in joy.

Bradley just barely finished his share of the dinner because he was so busy staring at Max while he ate. How his cheeks got stuffed as he took in so many bites. The way he would make those cute little sounds as he ate. And just how happy Max was during the meal. It warmed Bradley's heart in a way that he didn't think was possible. It made him want to be the one to make Max smile like that all the time.

Focus, Uppercrust. Don't make this about you. Tonight is about Max. Just make him happy.” Bradley's rational side scolded to him in his mind. And while he knew his rational side was right...still. He just wanted to spend more time with Max where it was just them. And the thought that this would be the only instance where that would happen made him feel sad.

Apparently that sadness was evident on his face, too, because Max's own face turned to a look of concern.

“Brad? Are you okay?” Max asked in worry. The question made the senior snap back into reality, but what really brought Bradley back to earth was the name Max used.

“...Brad.” Bradley spoke in surprise.

“Huh?” Max asked in confusion.

“That's the first time you've called me 'Brad' since Wednesday.” The Saluki explained, a smile slowly coming up to his lips.

“Oh, it is? I guess, uh, I never really noticed. I wasn't trying to poke fun at you, though. I know you don't like being called that.” Max said with an awkward chuckle as he rubbed the back if his neck.

“No, no, no! I've grown rather accustomed to Brad. From you, anyway.” Bradley said.

“Yeah? Well since you mentioned it, I've noticed you haven't called me 'freshman' in a while. Does that mean we're on first name bases now?” The Labradoodle asked with a teasing look.

“In your dreams, freshman.” Bradley replied with a teasing grin of his own, and the two laughed at their little joke. “But to answer your previous question, I'm fine. I was just...lost in thought for a moment.”

“Oh, well I get that. As long as you're okay. And man – that dinner sure was great!” Max exclaimed happily.

“I'm glad you enjoyed it, Max. And we finished just in time, too. We have one more stop to make on our itinerary.” Bradley said just as Carl and Kyle came over.

“Hey, dudes! You really wiped these plates clean. Up for dessert?” Carl asked.

“Unfortunately we'll have to pass, Carl. We have to get going. But dinner was amazing.” Bradley said as he took out his wallet and handed the predominantly blonde reptile his credit card. “And feel free to match the tip with the bill.”

“That's real gnarly of you, Bradley bro! Thanks.” Kyle said as he gave two thumbs up.

“What kind of desserts do you guys usually make? I'd love to know the next time I come here.” Max said as he stood up.

“We make all kinds of tasty treats, Max! Brownies, cookies, hot fudge sundaes – you name it. But our numero uno dessert is the Double-Down Chocolate Mousse that me and Carl make. It was originally crafted from my genius.” Kyle said with a smug smile, tapping at his skull to emphasis the 'genius'.

“What!? Don't tell the little dude that shuck and jive, bro! The Double-Down was my idea!” Carl vehemently corrected.

“Was not.” Kyle said with a glare.

“Was so.” Carl replied with a glare of his own.

“Was not!” Kyle stated as he got in his twin's face.

“Was so!” Carl yelled in return as he literally pushed back against his brother, their scaled snouts now pressed together as they growled to try and intimidate one another.

Max just chuckled at the pair like they were an after-dinner show while Bradley rolled his eyes in annoyed amusement. The twin bros definitely haven't changed. Luckily Antoinette came in and grabbed the front of her older brothers' shirts and yanked them down to their knees with surprising strength.

“Enough bickering! Bradley and Max have to get going. Charge the card already so they can leave.” Antoinette ordered with a stern look.

“Yes, Annie. We're sorry, Annie.” Kyle and Carl spoke in remorseful tones as they looked down.

“And besides, you both came up with the Double-Down Chocolate Mousse. Well you both came up with the name, anyway. Then you tried to make it the first time...and you blew it. So I helped you guys tweak the recipe. After you got it right the second time it's been your signature dessert ever since.” Antoinette explained.

Oh! ...Yeah, now I remember. Heh.” Kyle said with an awkward chuckle.

“Guess we forgot the finer details about our dessert origins.” Carl added with an embarrassed blush. The reptilian teenager shook her head and turned to the canines.

“Do either of you guys want twin brothers? They come with a free microwave.” Antoinette said with a joking grin.

“Hey! We're worth more than a microwave!” Kyle argued.

“That's right, bro! We're worth a microwave and a VCR TV!” Carl stated and the two nodded to themselves in agreement.

“Ha! Sorry, Antoinette. I already have a little sister. One sibling is plenty.” Bradley said as he playfully ruffled Antoinette's hair.

“And I've been a proud only child since I was born, so I'll definitely pass.” Max added with a grin.

“Oh well. Can't blame a girl for trying.” Antoinette said with a shrug.

After Bradley paid for the dinner and left a most generous tip, the pair bid the Donnelly family farewell. Bradley then revved up his Porsche and drove out of the diner's parking lot to hit the road once again. Max asked Bradley where they were going next, but Bradley told him that it was a surprise and to cover his eyes until they got there. Immensely curious but even more excited the freshman obliged and covered both hands over his eyes. Even though he felt the urge to peak Bradley playfully scolded him not to try and look, as if he read his mind. After a few minutes Max felt the car slow down before coming to a stop, presumably from Bradley parking. He then heard the driver's side door open and close, then a moment later he heard his front passenger's side door open.

“Alright, give me one of your hands. But you still have to keep your eyes covered. I'll lead you there.” Bradley's voice spoke, and it held a certain tone of eagerness.

“Okay, okay.” Max said with an excited smile as he moved one hand to cover both of his eyes while he gave Bradley his free hand.

The Labradoodle stood up and let himself be pulled along by the Saluki. He tried to make out where they were by the sounds. He heard a mix of different voices, ranging from adults to teenagers to kids, and they all sounded like they were laughing. He also heard various little odd noises like bells dinging, splashing and things popping. Max also picked up some new smells; some sweet and some salty. Before he could ask Bradley where they were as the curiosity just ate him up the senior stopped walking which made the freshman stop as well.

“Alright, open your eyes!” Bradley spoke in an excited tone.

Max removed his hand from his eyes and was immediately greeted to a wondrous sight to behold. It was a boardwalk carnival – which explained all of the sounds he heard and the smells he picked up. The sweet and salty scents were from the various concession stands that sold a variety of carnival goodies from fried cheese to cotton candy, the popping was from both the popcorn and the little party poppers going off, the splashing was from the water based games the carnival offered like catching fish and the dunking stool, the dinging was from bells being rung as people met the goal to win a game and the laughter was from the patrons all enjoying the carnival.

“Wow...” Was all Max could say as he stared at the sight.

“It's a pop-up carnival the boardwalk holds every fall. And by sheer luck they were having it this weekend. I thought it'd be fun to attend.” Bradley said as he grinned at the look of awe on Max's face. “And clearly you think so.”

“Of course I do! I haven't been to a carnival in ages! This is so cool, let's go!” Max exclaimed cheerily as he grabbed Bradley's arm and led the way over the threshold. And Bradley was happy to let himself get led away.

The canines took in every sight of the carnival. From marveling at the unique street performances to partaking in a couple concession stands. Max even got to do an impromptu performance of karaoke and sang one his favorite songs from Powerline. The crowd was amazed, and Bradley was even further enamored. As they walked closer towards the opposite entrance/exit of the pop-up boardwalk event, a special game caught Max's attention as the game operator called out to the passersby.

“Hurry, hurry, hurry! Step right up, folks, and try your hand at the Great Balloon Burst! Grab a BB and shoot all fifteen balloons before the timer runs out to win a prize.” The sea lion game operator said, gesturing to his stand.

“Hey, that looks like fun.” Max said as he stopped to look at the game stand.

“Why freshman, color me surprised. I didn't peg you as the type who'd care for even toy guns. You come off as more of an action figure type.” Bradley said.

“Well Grandpa Goof was a champion skeet shooter and a hunter. And he taught me how to handle a rifle before I learned how to skate. I'll try it!” Max stated determinedly as he walked over to the game stand with Bradley behind him, then handed the operator a five-dollar bill. “One round, please.”

“Sure thing, buddy! You got thirty seconds to shoot all fifteen balloons.” The game operator said as he took Max's money and handed him a BB rifle.

Bradley stood three feet behind Max and observed him as Max stood and took his position with the toy rifle. He was impressed to see that the Labradoodle was making the proper shooting stance. Clearly he took his grandfather's lessons to heart. And just as Bradley wondered if Max could back up his pose with action, in the blink of an eye Max was shooting each and every balloon. A small crowd even began to gather and watched in awe as Max made short work of the balloons. With a satisfying pop and eight seconds to spare, he shot the last helium filled colored orb of rubber. Bradley, the game operator and the small crowd all clapped at Max's sharpshooting.

“Grandfather Goof certainly taught you well, Max! You should come to the country club and show up the pricks in the skeet shooting club.” Bradley cheered, thoroughly impressed.

“Heh, heh. I may just take you up on that request. I'm just amazed I still know how to work these things.” Max said as he turned to the game operator to give him the BB rifle.

“A marvelous display you put on there, buddy. Pick whatever prize ya like.” The sea lion said as he gestured to the wall of stuffed animals and trinkets to his left.

Max stroked his chin in contemplation and looked over each and every prize, trying to decide which one to pick. Bradley also wondered what he would choose. Maybe that new boombox? Or perhaps that statuette of a robotic character from that cartoon of alien robots that turn into different modes of transportation. Eventually it seemed like Max decided on something as Bradley saw his ears perk up and Max leaned down to pick it up. Before he could ask what prize he got a sudden blur of dark purple filled his vision.

“Look! Isn't he cute?” Max asked with an eager smile.

Bradley stepped back to get a better look at what Max had just shoved into his face and was rather surprised at the prize he had chosen. It was a chinchilla plush toy made of boysenberry purple velvet and had glittery black button eyes and a matching glittery, realistic black nose. Bradley blinked a bit in surprise. He never pegged Mas to be one for plush animals. But then again, he did have a child at heart disposition to him. So perhaps he should have expected it.

“Yes...he's quite adorable.” The senior awkwardly replied.

“I'm glad you think so, because he's yours now.” Max said, smile still on his face, as he pushed the velvet chinchilla towards Bradley.

“W-What!?” Bradley asked in shock as his hands froze – not sure of what to do.

“I won him for you! You did so much already, taking me to dinner and everything. The least I can do is win you a prize. It just made me think of you.” Max explained with that earnest honesty that Bradley once despised but now respected.

That made Bradley stop and look into Max's chocolate brown eyes. He just vaguely heard a few aww's said by passersby as they likely heard and saw the scene, but Bradley didn't care about them. All he cared about was the person right in front of him. The bright lights and moving people at the pop-up carnival become indescribable, unimportant blurs. The only thing they did was highlight Max's sweet face and make him stand out. Just like Max stood out that fateful day when the new students came to Welig University and the Labradoodle skated past the Gamma Mu Mu Fraternity. He stood out to Brad then, and at the time he only saw Max as a potential means to an end. Now...he sees him as so much more. How could he possibly say no to him now? With a sincere smile Bradley reached up and carefully took hold of the plush toy, his long fingers brushing over Max's just like they did when Max took the rose from him.

“Thank you, Max. This is very thoughtful, and I will cherish him.” Bradley replied as he accepted the plush toy.

“You're welcome!” Max brightly exclaimed. Bradley stared at him for a moment before he took note that some of the stands were starting to close. Seems like the evening was giving them a cue to call it a night.

“Well, I think that about wraps up this day. Ready to head back to the campus?” Bradley asked. Max nodded in agreement and the pair left the boardwalk.

The drive back to the campus was filled with laughter, recounts of the evening and revealing certain things that occurred prior to the date. Bradley told Max how he had called the family butler, Alfonso, to bring his Porsche from his family's home yesterday morning in secret because he had completely forgotten he didn't have a car on campus as he had just gotten used to skating to get to wherever he needed to go. And the freshman admitted that his hair didn't really take that long to get together. He was just nervous about actually going on a date with Bradley and was spending time second guessing himself on if he would mess everything up before Bobby and P.J. both reassured Max that everything would be alright. Bradley made a mental note to send very generous care packages to the tuxedo cat and terrier mix. He definitely owed them big time for helping him bring this together. Finally the canines made it back to Welig University and Bradley parked the car near the main entrance.

“Heh, heh, heh.” Max chuckled.

“What's so funny?” The Saluki asked.

“Nothing. Just that the campus seems so small now after the night we had. I really had a great time, Bradley. I wish it wasn't over.” Max said.

“I'm happy to hear that, Max. And as for it being over...we can stretch it out a little more by walking to your dorm.” Bradley suggested.

“Sure, I'd like that.” Max said with an agreeing nod.

And so the pair exited the cherry red Porsche and proceeded to make the trek from the parking lot to the freshmen dorms. Once again their conversation was filled with laughter as they were now talking about their families. Max told Bradley about how happy he is that his father had met Sylvia, as he feared he would never love like that again after his mother passed away when Max was a toddler. Bradly gave his condolences, naturally, and to lighten the mood told Max about how his parents told him that they would disown Bradley if he even thought about naming a potential son Bradley Uppercrust the 4th. That did the trick in making Max laugh as he asked if they were serious, to which Bradley confirmed that they in fact were. Not that he didn't understand where they were coming from since, between him, his father and his grandfather, the name 'Bradley' and its variants was already stretched thin.

But as the freshmen dorms were coming closer and closer into view, a voice spoke in Bradley's head. Do it, the voice spoke. Do it now, it said again but louder. Tell him, the voice screamed. Bradley stopped walking as he took in the words. He knew what the voice was talking about. What it was telling to do...But was he ready to say it? He looked at Max as he watched him stop, apparently noticing that Bradley wasn't walking besides him any longer, then walk back towards where Bradley stood.

“Brad? You okay man? You're spacing out again. Is something wrong?” Max asked in concern. As he gazed into those concerned eyes, Bradley decided that he was ready. He had to be ready. Taking in a shaky breath and making a long exhale the senior looked at Max squarely in the eyes as he began to speak.

“Yes, something is wrong Max. Something with me.” Bradley replied slowly.

“Oh, did you eat too much maybe? We got some anti-acid in our medicine cabinet if you...” Max began but stopped when Bradley shook his head.

“No, no. It's not overeating, Max. Nothing is wrong with me physically. Something is wrong with me, inside...In my heart. I...I need to tell you something now that you should have heard months ago.” Bradley stated. Max's face turned serious as he stood a bit more firmly to look at Bradley.

“Alright. What do you want to tell me?” The Labradoodle asked.

This was it. Right here, right now, Bradley Uppercrust the 3rd would lay all of his cards on the table. He would speak with his heart completely on his sleeve. After breathing in and out one last time – Bradley spoke.

“Max...! I'm...I...I'm sorry. For everything. I'm sorry about how I treated your friends at the Bean Scene when we first met, I'm sorry for twisting your father against you, I'm sorry for cheating...” Bradley paused for a moment as he recalled the last few events and grounded himself to keep from breaking down as the image of his malicious former self had appeared before him. “And I...I am deeply remorseful for how I very nearly killed you, your father and Tank. God, after I woke up in the hospital everything from the X-Games to my title as 'the king' felt so irrelevant I wish I could forget about everything that led up to that point.”

Max stared at Bradley; eyes wide as he listened to his candid words. Bradley checked to see if he looked angry or disgusted, but he didn't see any such emotions. Or perhaps Max was just hiding them. Either way he gave a nod for Bradley to continue. So he did.

“At first I tried blaming you for losing, for the Gammas practically acting like I don't exist, my family being ashamed of what I had done and for most of the campus wanting nothing to do with me. I blamed you for so long...but it was only after you visited me that day at the hospital that I finally understood everything. Everything that I said and did was no one's fault but my own. It wasn't the responsibility of anyone else but me to make things right.” Bradley further explained, pacing around a bit before stopping to look at Max.

Max just stood there for a moment, blinking. Then he spoke up.

“Do you...or did you...hate me?” Max asked tentatively. He even seemed to shrink away, as if he was scared of the answer he'd get.

There it was. The question that would make and break this whole situation. Bradley shook his head in a violent 'no' before he responded.

“No, no Max! I don't hate you! I didn't hate you then and I don't hate you now. I was just...Argh! I was a petty, jealous bastard! I was jealous that you're talented without even trying, jealous of how people hung around you because they wanted to and not out of obligation or to get something in return like they do with me. I was jealous because you're a pedigree breed, and a designer pedigree on top of it. Meaning I wasn't as special as a purebred pedigree. And I was so petty and stupid about it all that I decided the better way to deal with it all was to cheat, to hurt you, instead of putting in the work to be just as good.” Bradley sighed as he ran a hand through his styled coiffure and ruined it, but he didn't care.

Max listened, blinked and he nodded. Then he looked at Bradley.

“So, how do you feel now? About skating...About me.” Max said carefully. This time Bradley blinked, and then he slowly walked over until he was standing right in front of the Labradoodle.

“Now, Max, I feel like I want to actually put in the work to be good at skating. On my own. Without any tricks! And I'm embarrassed to admit I didn't think I had to until recently. However, I'm proud to admit that I have you to thank for making me want to put in the work.” Bradley replied. When he saw that Max's expression didn't change, he continued, now sort of rambling. “Look, I get that this probably sounds like a lot of crap coming from me. Heck I can't believe I'm saying all of this. But I do mean it, Max! I'm sorry to you, and I want to apologize to Tank and the guys and also your father. I just haven't worked my way up them, but I at least wanted to...”

Bradley's words came to a sudden halt as he felt something wrap around his neck followed by something pressing against his chest. He blinked in surprise for a moment before looking down. And that was when he realized that what was pressing against his chest was Max, and what he felt around his neck were his arms. Maximilian Goof was hugging him. The Saluki's eyes widened in shock. He didn't know what to do. He didn't know what to say. Thankfully, though, Max said something for him.

“Apology accepted, Brad. You clearly had a lot to get off your chest, and I'm sure it wasn't easy to even think of. Lead alone say. I forgive you, man. So stop letting it weigh you down.” Max spoke, and while Bradley couldn't see his face he knew that buck-toothed snout had a kind smile.

And just like that – Bradley felt all of the ugly emotions from the past gradually fall off his heart. His entire body welcomed the new light feeling. His chest wasn't tight anymore from the guilt that gripped it, and his throat didn't feel dry and choked up from the words he didn't say that were stuck. Bradley felt free. And once again he had Max to thank for that. Slowly Bradley raised his arms to wrap around the younger male's torso and hugged him back. It felt so nice. Like holding his favorite blanket fresh out of the dryer and letting the warmth embrace him to protect his fur from the brisk morning chill. Bradley couldn't hold back the relieved smile that spread across his snout. Or the happy tears that began to fall down his cheeks.

Thank you, Max.” Bradley spoke in a soft whimper as he let the tears fall. It was a feeling of weakness he welcomed because it was so freeing.

“No, Bradley. Thank you for being honest. And for working so hard to be better. I knew you could be.” Max replied.

The pair stood like that for a while. The chill of soft billowing fall winds unable to break their warm embrace. After a moment more they pulled away to look at each other. Bradley stared into the unrelenting kindness in Max's brown eyes – and Max gazed tenderly at Bradley's baby blue eyes that looked like they had finally found the light at the end of a dark tunnel. Max reached a hand up to wipe away Bradley's remaining tears, and the Saluki leaned into each tender rub. The pair stared at each other once again with sweet smiles. Suddenly their faces began to move closer. Neither were sure who moved first and who followed after, but that didn't matter. All that mattered was that they were getting closer together, and closer. Eyes closed as their lips were almost touching...

But as they say, almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

“WOOHOO! YOU GO, MAXIMILIAN! THAT'S HOW YOU LAND A KEEPER!” Shouted an all too familiar voice from above.

This made the two men snap their eyes open with shock as they pulled away, although they didn't break up the hug, and search around for the voice that yelled out. And upon looking upwards they saw none other than Bobby Zimmeruski hanging out the window of his, P.J. and Max's dorm room giving two thumbs up. Bradley's mouth hung open with incredulous shock while Max just had a plain old 'seriously, dude' expression on his face. Clearly used to similar situations like this. Suddenly Bobby was yanked back inside the dorm room and P.J. poked his head out.

“I'm really sorry about that, guys! He always gets this way when he watches night-time soap operas! So uh...carry on! Sorry again!” P.J. awkwardly called out as he went back into the dorm and closed the window.

Bradley rolled his eyes and let out an exasperated groan, all of the fuzzy feelings now replaced with sheer annoyance. He was so close! Why did that pothead have to come out and voice his support before he and Max kissed? What MTV host with overly moussed up hair son of a bitch is in the bushes with a candid camera recording his despair? This is obviously a conspiracy! But all of that ire quickly vanished as Bradley heard a special sound come from Max, who was laughing once P.J. had ducked back into their room.

“Ha, ha, ha, ha, ah-hyuck!” Max laughed, making the signature yukking chortle he inherited from his dad. Max immediately cleared his throat and blushed in embarrassment at the sound he made. “S-Sorry! It's not funny, but that was just so like Bobby. God, that laugh must have sounded weird coming from me, yeah?”

“No. Not at all. It actually sounded kind of cute coming from you.” Bradley said, then grinned as he was unable to help himself and added on. “In a nerd way. Just like a freshman.”

“Tch, whatever. You're the nerd.” Max playfully quipped back. The two looked at each other again before sharing one last chuckle.

“Well then. I guess this is goodnight.” Bradley said as he slowly unwrapped his arms from around Max's torso.

“Yeah. Guess so.” Max spoke in a somewhat sad tone as he lowered his arms from around Bradley's neck. But just before they totally parted Bradley took both of Max's hands into his.

“If you're up for it, maybe we could do this again? Say next week after that big English Literature test?” Bradley asked, eyes hopeful. Max's own eyes widened before they shined brightly as he gave a matching smile.

“I'd like that a lot, Brad. How about the movie theater? There's this really cool sequel to an action-comedy film about a Chinese cop and an L.A detective that's out now.” Max said.

“Ha! Sounds like it has a lot going on. Why not? I'm sure it'll be miles more entertaining than the hundred and one renditions of Swan Lake that I've seen with mother.” The senior replied.

“Great! I'll see you then. And that time, it'll be my treat.” Max said as he slowly pulled away, his hands beginning to slip from Bradley's.

“Looking forward to it. I had a very good time, Max.” Bradley said with a smile, which earned him a smile back.

“Me too, Brad. See ya later.” And with that Max finally pulled away from Bradley and walked the rest of the way to the freshmen dorms, waving to Bradley one last time before he went inside.

As soon as Max was out of his sight Bradley let loose a loud 'whoop' of victory as he raced back to his Porsche. In that moment he felt like he was on top of the world and that no one could touch him. Not only had Max forgiven Bradley for his transgressions but they actually had another date set. He had another opportunity to bring that smile to Max's face again. And maybe next time they'll be able to kiss uninterrupted. Bradley was so over the moon with all of the possibilities that ran through his mind that, as he got into the car, he almost didn't notice the velvet chinchilla that Max won for him at the pop-up carnival. The little plush toy was sitting in the backseat, laid on its side. Immediately thinking back to the Labradoodle who gave it to him Bradley reached into the back and gently placed the plush toy down on his velvety rear in the front passenger seat before strapping a seat belt over it.

“There you are, Count Zachariah. You deserve a front row seat.” Bradley said with a smile before finally getting into his car and driving back to the Gamma Mu Mu Fraternity, on cloud nine all the way home.

However, there was still a certain potential of overcast that could rain on the canines' parade...

The following Monday...

The new week was in full swing, and the campus was bustling with student activity as per usual. People going to and from class, some people hanging out with friends after their classes, working on homework on the benches. Just the typical stuff. Of course the majority of people were drawn to the university's watering hole; the Bean Scene. Seniors, sophomores and freshmen were gathered all around to listen to the blues band play on stage. And to the left of the stage Max, P.J., Bobby and Vicky sat at their usual booth together. Usually they would be talking about Max doing well in his culinary arts major, or how Bobby got yet another voucher from his favorite snack brand for being a long-time patron. But today the topic of conversation was more romantic.

“Come on, dude, give us the details! You don't go out for two and a half hours and just say 'we had a good time'.” Bobby said with a knowing grin.

“Why not? I'm telling the truth. We did have a good time.” Max replied with his own coy smile.

“Ah, but that is only the blanket of snow atop the majestic points of Mount Everest. How did you feel during your good time, Max?” P.J. asked as he curiously leaned in.

“Yes. Did you feel the wet concrete of Bradley's kindness pour into the cracks of your broken heart and slowly but surely harden to make yourself feel whole again? Was he every bit the blue blood and treated you with the utmost respect, that you swept your own self of your feet just to fall into his arms?” Vicky asked with an elegant eyebrow raised in question.

“Come on, you guys are reading way too much into this. We went to dinner and ate, we went to a pop-up carnival on the boardwalk and I won him a stuffed chinchilla and then he brought me back here. Beginning, middle and end.” Max replied as he pointed from one end of his side of the booth table to the middle to the other end to emphasis his point.

“Ah, ah, ah Maximilian! You forgot the end credits!” Bobby playfully chastised as he wagged his finger. “I saw you two having your little Can You Feel the Love Tonight moment. If I didn't forget my Elton John CD back home, I would've played it on the stereo.”

“Ha, ha! I think Brad would've come into the freshmen dorms after you if you did that, Bobby boy. And I don't think it'd be to get your cheese whiz stash.” Max replied with a chuckle.

“Seriously though, Max, we're all glad that you had a good time.” P.J. said with a happy smile.

“Indeed. It seems like fate took the unfortunate circumstances you both experienced and used them as catalysts to bring you together when you needed each other the most.” Vicky added with an agreeing nod.

“What they said, Max! You got our full support!” Bobby enthusiastically stated.

“Thanks, guys. I really appreciate that.” Max said with his own smile.

Just then Bradley came down the stairs leading into the cafe. Several people who saw him greeted the senior, with one group even inviting him to drink with them. But Bradley kindly turned them down. He was here for one special reason. Or, more specifically, one special person. In the middle of the night Bradley kicked himself because he realized he hadn't given Max his cellphone number and email address. So he wanted to correct that egregious oversight as quickly as possible. After searching the room he eventually saw Max in a booth with his friends. The senior smiled widely and started to approach Max when someone cut in front of him and walked ahead towards the booth. Bradley started to curse the person's rudeness until he got a good look at them and his whole body went rigid as he stood there in shock. Oh no, Bradley thought with steadily growing dread. Not him!

Max was laughing at a funny story Vicky was recounting from her most recent family reunion when he suddenly felt a shadow loom over him, followed by a hand resting on his shoulder. He stopped laughing and turned around to see who it was. And dear God how he wished he didn't. Before him stood the absolute last person Max ever wanted to see again. The horn dog of an English Foxhound, Eric Covington.

“Afternoon, Maxie! Fancy seeing you here.” Eric greeted in a sickeningly sweet tone of voice.

In that moment all of the joy that Max previously had was sucked up like a vacuum cleaner draining his very soul. After the night he had with Bradley, everything about Eric was vastly different from the first time he met him. The smile he once thought was charming now looked forced. As if it was trying too hard to maintain a friendly image. The cockney English accent that he swooned over now sounded like chalk going through a cheese grater. And two weeks ago he wouldn't have minded him putting his hand on his shoulder. Now Max felt the urge to shave off that whole patch of fur on his right shoulder and bleach the area of his band tee where Eric laid his greasy paw on. He saw the man for the disgusting creep he was. Plus, after what P.J. and Bobby told him that Eric had done when he was a Gamma pledge, calling him a 'disgusting creep' was being too nice.

“Hello, Eric. It's...shocking to see you, too.” Max curtly responded.

“Yeah well, I tend to have that effect on folks. Leave 'em stunned and all.” Eric said as he flipped his bangs in a showy fashion. Not at all grasping the hint of Max's words or noticing the looks of disdain the table occupants were giving him. “Anyways I was wondering when we should have our next date.”

“...Our next...what?” Max asked, totally shocked.

“Well yeah. I know I canceled on ya last minute and all, but you know how it is. So where do you wanna go? Sky's the limit, Maxie.” Eric said and began to wrap his arm around Max's shoulder.

Immediately the freshman jolted up to his feet, making the table rattle and causing some people to stop and look. But he didn't care. Eric's arm felt like a python was trying to coil around his neck. It was just so gross. So vastly different from how Bradley's arms...No, now's not the time for reminiscing. Now Max had to set this prick straight. Turning to look at Eric he steeled his face and spoke.

“Listen up, Covington. I'm going to make this super clear so that there's no misunderstanding. There's not going to be a 'next date'. Matter of fact – we didn't even have a date set up the first time. At least not by my standards. You just wanted something, or rather someone, quick and easy. That wasn't what I wanted. Honestly, though, that's my fault. Setting myself up for disappointment and giving you the benefit of the doubt when I shouldn't have.” Max said.

“Wha...? Now come on, Maxie. You're being a might unfair, dont'cha think? I just had a certain itch that I needed to scratch. Maybe I should have been more up front about it but I didn't wanna push you either.” Eric explained, awkwardly laughing as he plead his case.

“Oh, I'm sure. You wanted someone 'less uptight' than I was and couldn't be patient. I get it. So I'll offer you the same courtesy and be honest with you.” Max then stepped closer to the English Foxhound as he looked him in the eyes with an unimpressed glare. “Eric Covington; I want to date someone who's less of a creep. Don't call me – because I'll never call you.”

After that the people who were watching the scene unfold snapped their fingers in support of Max. Some were even laughing at the campus creep being taken down a few notches. P.J., Vicky and Bobby also grinned smugly at Eric as they watched him get taken to task. Max then turned back to his friends and started to walk back to the booth until he felt a sharp grip on his wrist and was forced to turn back around to face Eric. But his charming, crooked smile was totally gone now. And in it's place was an ugly, hateful stare.

“Well don't you have some stones on ya, Max.” Eric growled out, spitting out the younger male's name with venom. “Think that just 'cause you won the X-Games as a freshman that you got your pick of the litter, right? A Spoonerville twat like you? I'm as good as you'll ever get!”

“A good example of something bad is what you are! Let me go, Covington!” Max yelled as he tried to pull his arm back, but Eric's grip was surprisingly strong.

“Hey, mac! Not cool!” Bobby stated angrily as he stood up along with P.J. while Vicky protracted her claws and hissed lowly.

“You pissants back off! This is between me and this little uppity cu...AAARGH!!” Eric's vulgar statement was cut off by his pained scream when the arm he was using to hold onto Max was suddenly grabbed as well. And it was hard enough to make him let go of Max.

Immediately the Labradoodle stepped back and held onto his sore wrist. His friends rushed to his side to check on him and he assured them he was alright. And when Max turned to see who had stepped in his eyes widened in surprise, relief and a touch of awe. Standing there like a dashing protector was none other than Bradley. And by the looks of it his long fingers had Eric's arm in an even tighter grip than what Eric had Max's wrist in.

When Bradley saw that it was Eric approaching Max, he felt the violent urges stir up again. But he chose to calm himself and just stay close in the background as he watched the confrontation go down. It sickened him how Eric kept calling the younger male "Maxie" as if he were his boyfriend and not the horn dog who stood him up because Max was unwilling to put out on the first date. Luckily to his elation and pride Max stood his ground against Eric. In no uncertain terms Max told him to shove off and shove it where the sun don't shine. Bradley wished he brought his camcorder so he could record and watch Covington's loser creep face get rejected again and again. But that elation was soon replaced with horror when he saw Eric grab Max's wrist. And in that moment, Bradley only thought of two words.

Hell. NO.

“I believe that Max isn't desirous of your company, Covington.” Bradley spoke in a low tone of warning as he shoved Eric away from the booth, then moved to take a protective stance in front of Max. Eric quickly recovered his balance and when he got a look at who intervened he glared back at the Saluki.

“Uppercrust. You're the last mug I thought I'd see today. Did'ja call up daddums to give a donation to the school? Is that how you got to stay on after makin' a total arse of yourself at the X-Games?” Eric asked in an antagonizing tone of mockery.

Now everyone in the cafe was looking at the scene unfold, and they all turned to Bradley to see his reaction. Ordinarily Bradley would've become unhinged by the mere implication that he was using his parents' money to get ahead. But the senior just stood there calmly, hands in his pockets and staring Eric down. He gave a small shrug before finally responding.

“What's it matter? You wouldn't believe me if I told you that I worked my ass off to stay here after making an ass of myself months back, as you said. Besides, if the school is fine with watch list contenders like you staying, I don't think they'd care much about keeping a little ol' former cheater like me.” Bradley replied, giving a wicked grin.

The cafe attendees all whispered a chorus of shocked “oh's” at the counter response. Even the band played a little tune for sound effect to the reaction. P.J. and Vicky chuckled while Bobby wrote on a napkin and held it up to show a score with Bradley having ten points and Eric having zero. Max just grinned and laid a thankful hand on Bradley's shoulder who looked back to smile at him. The English Foxhound stood rigid as he felt his face flush with embarrassment and anger. But he refused to back down.

“Shut up! You ain't no better than me or any bloke on the street, Uppercrust!” Eric yelled. To this Bradley's smile dropped and he addressed Eric with a calm, resolved look.

“You're right. I'm not. And to some I'm even worse than you are. But the difference between you and me, Eric, is that I know I'm not any better. And I'm trying to be better. While you? You'll still be the same creepy loser who gets paid by prostitutes to leave them alone going out of here as you were when you came in.” The Saluki stated with crossed arms.

“Tch. Sanctimonious blighter. So you're telling me that I'm going to leave, are ya, Uppercrust?” Eric asked as he walked closer.

“I am. And you will, if you know what's good for you.” Bradley stated as he braced his feet, unfolded his arms and balled his fists. He stood in front of Max like a man who had everything to lose and was going to give everything he had to protect it.

“Brad, don't get in trouble over this creep.” Max said as he gave Bradley's shoulder a worried squeeze.

“Oh no, Maxie! Cause now I'm curious. I wanna see how the fallen campus king here is gonna make me leave.” Eric said with a sarcastic smile as he stood right in front of Bradley, his own fists balled and ready to fight.

Then suddenly, a large shadow blanketed itself over Eric. And a new voice spoke up.

“He's not gonna be the one to make you leave, pally.” Said a Brooklyn accented voice.

“Huh? The hell...!?” Eric cursed in surprise as he was suddenly lifted off the ground. “HEY!”

“But we are.” Said a baritone voice in a taunting rumble.

Bradley blinked for a moment to focus on the new people who stepped into the fray, and his mouth dropped in shock when he saw who it was. Tank, Slouch, Boris, Kevin, Shades and Federico...his main Gamma brothers. They were all here.

“G...Guys?” Bradley asked in surprise. Tank looked at Bradley and gave him a two-finger salute with his free hand while his other kept a grip on Eric's throat.

“Heya, baby! Long time no see! This loser giving you guys a hard time?” Tank asked.

“H-Huh? Well yeah, he is. But how did you guys know to come here?” Bradley asked – completely ignoring how Eric was now struggling for air.

“A couple little birdies told us about how Covington was on the prowl again and tried pulling his love 'em and leave 'em crap on Max.” Shades responded.

Max blinked in surprise at hearing this, then turned to look at Bobby and P.J. with a suspicious look. Of course the two just looked away and whistled in an unconvincing nonchalant manner. Vicky just gave a shrug and smiled to which Max rolled his eyes in amusement.

“So we kept our ears to the ground, watching out for him if he tried any funny business. And wouldn't ya know it? Bastard just couldn't help himself.” Boris said, pointing a thumb to the English Foxhound in question.

Slouch made a grunting noise, then laughed in a maniacal tone.

“Like Slouch said, so's we decided to step in and teach this loser that you don't mess with us Gammas.” Federico said with a confident puff of his chest.

Us Gammas? Wait...You mean...Even after everything you guys still consider me a Gamma?” Bradley asked in surprise. God, please don't let him cry right now.

“Sure. There's only one Gamma Bull, Bradley.” Tank replied with a kind smile and a friendly wink. Then he turned to look at Eric with an evil smile. “So just say the word, and we'll see this loser out.”

Bradley blinked then looked at Eric. Ah yes, he had nearly forgotten about him. A wicked smile to match the one Tank had slowly formed on Bradley's face as he rubbed his hands together in anticipation.

“Well, if you don't mind a little trash removal. Gammas, fe...” The Saluki started to say but then stopped and turned to Max. “Actually, Max, I think you should have the honor of giving the order.”

“Really? I can?” Max asked in surprise.

“Of course. You're the aggrieved party after all. It's only fair that you should have the satisfaction of seeing this creep out.” Bradley said as he gave a bow and stepped aside to stand next to Max.

“Well, do any of you guys mind?” Max asked.

“Not one bit, sweetheart. Like I said, just say the word.” Tank replied with a kind smile.

Max looked at Tank, then he looked at the rest of the Gammas, then he finally looked at Eric. The English Foxhound gave a pathetic, insincere smile as if to beg for mercy...but Max found that he didn't quite have the required amount to care. With his own devious grin the Labradoodle cleared his throat before speaking.

“Gammas, fetch!” Max ordered.

The Gammas all growled at Eric, bearing their fangs through vicious smiles. And all Eric could do was whimper in fear. With a flurry of movements out the campus creep went – somehow catapulting right out of the cafe like a shot before he slammed into the nearby water fountain, hanging on the statue's outstretched hand by his jeans. Everyone who saw the display laughed and cheered. Eric definitely had that coming for a long time. Even some teachers that were out and about who had no love lost for Eric were conveniently looking elsewhere. Finally things started to settle down in the Bean Scene which allowed Bradley to turn his attention to Max.

“Are you alright? He didn't hurt you too bad, did he?” Bradley asked in concern.

“No. My wrist is just a little sore. But it'll pass. Thanks for making him back off like you did. I really appreciate it, Brad.” Max said with a smile.

“No problem, anytime.” Bradley said. Suddenly he remembered his Gamma brothers and turned around to see them waiting beside the exit in an empty corner of the cafe, a silent cue of wanting to talk. Bradley then turned back to Max. “Hey, I need to talk with Tank and the others. But I'll be right back.”

“Sure thing. Take your time.” Max said with an understanding nod.

The senior then turned around and walked over to the table his main Gamma brothers were standing around at. He looked at them, and they looked at him. Deciding to break the ice Bradley spoke first.

“Ahem, well. I uh, I appreciate you guys stepping in like that to help. Although I'm sure it was more for Max than me. Not that I'm resentful, of course! None of you owe me anything after...” Bradley rambled a bit, then paused when he realized he wasn't saying what he had to say. So with a heavy sigh Bradley looked at his Gamma brothers with the sincerest face as he spoke. “Tanks, Boris, Slouch, Kevin, Federico, Shades...I'm so incredibly sorry for what I did. What I put you guys through. Especially you, Tank. I'm not proud of any of what I did. I was so stupidly jealous about wanting to win and stay on top...that I didn't think of how lonely I'd be if I didn't have my team, my Gamma brothers, my friends, you all at the top with me. I...I know that words can't erase what I did, but for whatever it's worth I want you all to know that I am sorry.”

The Gammas all stood silent, seemingly taking in Bradley's words. Then they all looked at each other...and smiled.

“Well whaddya know? The freshman was tellin' the truth after all.” Kevin said.

“Wh-What? The freshman? Who...?” Bradley started to ask and Shades spoke up to answer.

“Remember how I said a couple of birdies told us about Covington? Well a very special birdie, an angel even, told us about how sorry you were.” Shades replied, lowering his trademark sunglasses as he gestured his snout behind Bradley, who turned around to see that he was gesturing to Max.

“Max...? He told you?” Bradley asked in surprise.

“Eeyup. Called the Gamma House this morning just after you left for classes. He told us everything. How you've been putting in extra work with the coach to stay on the sports team, how you actually help out other students on campus. He even told us about how you went outta your way to cheer him up last Saturday.” Boris added.

Slouch made a grunting noise while stretching his neck out and pointing to Bradley, who nodded in understanding.

“Yeah, you're right Slouch. He...he really did stick his neck out for me. Heh. I guess that's three things I owe him for now.” Bradley said with a light chuckle as he looked over his shoulder to stare at Max, who was happily chatting with his friends again. After a moment he then turned back to the Gammas with a hopeful expression. “So...does this mean you guys forgive me?”

“Hey, what's ta forgive? You acted like a schmuck, you realized you were a schmuck, you apologized for actin' like a schmuck. Done and done. Fuhgeddaboudit!” Federico stated with a wave of his hand.

“Although, we do have one condition.” Tank stated with a serious look as he walked over to Brad.

“I understand. What is it? Just tell me what you want, and I'll do it.” Bradley said, steeling his mind for the worst. Tank looked down at him with that same serious face for a moment. Then he grinned as he took Bradley into a playful headlock and gave him noogie.

“We want the date play-by-play, baby! We heard how you pulled out all the stops and even got the Porsche out for little Max!” Tank stated with a boisterous laugh, making the other Gammas laugh and soon Bradley joined in. How he missed this so much.

“Come now, Tank. You know it's in poor taste to share details of a first date. A second one may never happen.” Bradley said as he pulled himself out of Tank's hold.

“Yeah right! Like you wouldn't buy the school just so's Max wouldn't have to go to class and you could spend time with him.” Kevin said half-jokingly.

“I'll neither confirm nor deny that. How about I pay for your coffees here for the next two months, starting now?” Bradley suggested. The Gammas seemed to ponder on the idea for a moment before shrugging.

“Eh, good enough. But we will get all the details later.” Tank swore to Bradley.

“You're more than welcome to try, big fella.” Bradley said with a confident grin, which then turned into a happy one as he held his hand out. “And I'm glad you guys still want me around.”

“Once a Gamma, always a Gamma baby.” The large bulldog said with a smile as he gave Bradley a hardy handshake. Just then Max came over to the group.

“Hey. I hope I'm not interrupting anything.” Max said.

“Not at all. What is it?” Bradley asked.

“Well, I figured we should all get together and celebrate throwing that creep out. The cafe owner is letting us have their really big booth so we can all fit. And the band is about to perform their special number.” Max explained.

“Sounds like a deal we can't refuse. Coffee's all on me.” Bradley said.

“What? Like it was when we first met?” Max asked with a grin as he walked to the counter to order.

“Hey, that was your fault then freshman! Some way to show gratitude to the man who valiantly defended your honor from an abhorrent wannabe suitor.” Bradley said dramatically as he followed Max.

“Ha, ha! Well do forgive me, my valiant hero. I'll pay for your coffee then.” Max replied in mock remorse. Bobby, P.J. and Vicky all walked over towards to join the Gammas as they watched their respective leaders order at the counter.

“Fifteen dollars says they make it official after a week.” Tank says.

“Twenty-five dollars says two weeks.” Bobby added.

“Fifty even. A month tops.” Shades said with a confident nod.

“What say you, Peej? How long do you think before Maximilian and Bradster announce their happy union?” Bobby asked. P.J. hummed in thought for a moment, then smiled as he shook his head.

“There's no need to bet on it.” P.J. said.

“Huh? Why not?” Kevin asked.

“If I'm correctly assuming what my scholarly stud is implying there's no need to bet on when they'll be official because, in a way, they already are.” The Abyssinian poet said.

“That's right, my well-read enchantress. Max and Bradley are a lot like my parents. It doesn't seem like it's official right now. But it is. It's just a question of when they'll realize it.” P.J. said.

Bobby and the Gammas all blinked at P.J., shared a look and then turned look at Max and Bradley. They watched as they both coordinated carrying the eleven cups, each one taking five in a drink carrier. But as they both reached for the last cup their hands touched. This made Bradley and Max pause and look at each other. The freshman gave a little chuckle while the senior smiled fondly at him. And they apparently opted for carrying the last cup together – their hands still touching. Realizing now what P.J. and Vicky meant the rest of the group smiled.

“I think you're right on the money, P.J.” Bobby said, and the Gammas nodded in agreement.

“Hey guys, come on! The band is about to start!” Max called out to their friends.

“Yeah, and I want to pass out all of this coffee before my fur frizzes from the heat!” Bradley called out as well.

And so the Goof Troop and the Gammas all sat together, drinking varying flavors of hot beverages as they soaked up the music from the band. All the while Max and Bradley were covertly holding hands beneath the table.

Headcanon Notes:

Welig University = The name I made for the college. Welig is an Old English word for "willow", specifically the willow tree. The willow tree symbolizes multiple things including adaptability, inner wisdom and rebirth. These are all things that Bradley goes through and so I felt that this would be a good name for the college.

Kevin, Shades, Federico and Boris = Names for the other Gammas shown with Bradley. Kevin is the name for the lanky Gamma with the long, crooked snout and Fonzy haircut. Shades is the name of the bald Bull Terrier looking Gamma with the sunglasses. Federico is the name of the shortest Gamma with the Italian accent, goatee and prescription glasses. And Boris is the name of the bulldog looking Gamma with the hat.

Pedigree breed/Designer pedigree/Purebred pedigree = Since the characters in the Mickey Mouse universe are primarily anthros, I figured there's a hierarchy among the different species. As far as dogs go the common breeds are average citizens and pedigree breeds are the elites/blue bloods. The Labradoodle is the first established designer dog, being a carefully bred mix of a Labrador Retriever and Standard Poodle. Max gets his Labrador Retriever side from Goofy and his standard poodle side from his late biological mother. As such he is a designer pedigree anthro dog. Bradley is a Saluki, which is a type of sighthound. He is a purebred pedigree anthro dog.

Mr. Creamsicle = Max's orange stuffed teddy bear. The coloring makes me think of the orange creamsicle ice pop.

Uppercrust Shipping = The name of Bradley's family company, which is a huge shipping conglomerate that originates from the United Kingdom.
