Evan Buckley stood in front of the full-length mirror in Tommy Kinard’s home, smoothing down his shirt for what felt like the hundredth time. His reflection showed a man with tousled brown curls, free from their gel jail, and a nervous fidget in his blue eyes. He glanced over at Tommy, who was casually leaning against the doorframe with a smirk.
“You know, you’re making the collar on that shirt look worse every time you touch it,” Tommy teased, his blue eyes sparkling with amusement.
Evan chuckled nervously, trying to hide his anxiety. “It just doesn’t feel right. What if she doesn’t like me? What if I say the wrong thing? I mean, it’s not every day you meet your boyfriend’s younger sister.”
Tommy crossed the room and placed a comforting hand on Evan’s shoulder. “Babe, it’s just dinner. She’s not gonna judge you harshly. She’s excited to meet you.”
Evan bit his lip, his eyes flitting between Tommy and his own reflection. “But what if she thinks I’m boring? Or she doesn’t like the restaurant? What if she’s disappointed in you for dating me?”
Tommy let out a soft laugh, shaking his head. “Evan, she’s not gonna judge you like that. She’s a foodie who’s more interested in the appetizers than analyzing the people at the table. And she’s a lot like me—if you’re nervous, she’ll just try to make you feel at ease.”
Evan took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. “I just really want to make a good impression. I don’t want to mess this up for us.”
Tommy stepped closer, cupping Evan’s face gently in his hands. “You’re not going to mess anything up. You’re smart, you’re funny, and you’re kind. That’s all she’s looking for.”
Evan managed a weak smile. “I guess. It’s just that this is important to me. I want to be part of your family, and I want her to see that.”
Tommy’s eyes softened as he leaned in and pressed a tender kiss to Evan’s forehead. “You’re already part of my family. She’ll see that you’re a good person, just like I do. All you need to do is be yourself.”
Evan took another deep breath, this time feeling a bit steadier. “Okay. I can do this. Thanks for calming me down.”
Tommy grinned, holding out his hand. “Anytime. Ready to head out?”
Evan took Tommy’s hand and squeezed it, feeling the warmth and support in the gesture. “Let’s do this.”
They walked out of the apartment together, fingers intertwined, as the evening light poured into the hallway. Tommy led the way to the car, a comforting presence beside Evan as they drove through the city streets.
The restaurant was a charming bistro with a cozy, dimly lit atmosphere. As they entered, Tommy spotted his sister sitting at a table near the window. She was absorbed in the menu, her dark hair cascading over her shoulders. She looked up as they approached, her eyes lighting up with recognition.
“Hey, Tommy! Hi, Evan!” she greeted, her smile genuine and welcoming.
“Hi, Izzy!” Tommy said, pulling out a chair for Evan and then one for himself. “This is Evan, my boyfriend. Evan, this is Isabella.”
Izzy’s eyes sparkled as she extended her hand to Evan. “Nice to finally meet you, Evan. I’ve heard so much about you. Please call me Izzy.”
Evan took her hand, his nerves calming at her warm demeanor. “Nice to meet you, Izzy. I hope I can live up to all the good things Tommy’s told you about me.”
Izzy laughed, a musical sound that made Evan feel more at ease. “Oh, don’t worry. I’m sure you’ll be great. Now, let’s see what’s on the menu. I’ve been craving the truffle risotto here.”
As the evening progressed, the conversation flowed easily. Izzy shared stories from college, and Tommy chimed in with playful comments about her childhood, sticking to happy stories. Evan found himself laughing and joining in, feeling the initial tension melt away.
By the time dessert arrived, Evan felt like he had known Izzy for years. She was kind, funny, and easy to talk to. It was clear that the family Tommy claimed was just as wonderful as he had hoped.
As they walked back to the car, Evan looked at Tommy with a relieved smile. “I guess I worried for nothing. Izzy’s great.”
Tommy squeezed Evan’s hand. “Told you. See? It wasn’t so bad.”
Evan laughed, leaning his head on Tommy’s shoulder. “Thanks for being there with me. I really needed that.”
Tommy kissed the top of Evan’s head. “I’ll always be here for you. I’m glad you had a good time.”
They drove home in comfortable silence, the city lights flashing by outside. As they arrived back at Tommy’s apartment, Evan felt a sense of accomplishment and warmth.
“I’m glad we did this,” Evan said, looking over at Tommy with a smile.
“Me too,” Tommy replied, opening the door. “There will be many more dinners to come, but tonight was special.”
They entered the apartment and settled on the couch, the evening’s success hanging in the air like a pleasant afterglow.
Evan snuggled closer to Tommy, feeling content. “So, what’s next for us?”
Tommy wrapped an arm around Evan and kissed him softly. “Next? We just keep making memories together. That’s what it’s all about.”
Evan nodded, resting his head on Tommy’s shoulder. “I’m looking forward to it.”
They sat there, enjoying the quiet comfort of each other’s presence, knowing that this was just the beginning of their journey together.
