Work Text:

It was their goddamn wedding day, and they couldn’t even catch a break.

It was supposed to be the happiest day of their lives. The most memorable. The most amazing day. After being engaged for almost two years, they could officially call each other husbands.

But instead of standing at the altar, kissing his soulmate, and being declared husband and husband, Lance found himself jogging down the hall of the hospital until he found the right room.

Keith!

His stupid, stupid husband fiancé smirked at him tiredly from where he lay in the hospital bed, in his red slacks and half-unbuttoned white button down with leads on his chest. A bandage was wrapped tightly around the back of his head and ending at his forehead, hidden underneath his bangs. His nose was also encased in a white cast, bits of dried blood on his upper lip.

“Hey baby,” Keith nodded, sounding absolutely wrecked.

Lance turned to Shiro and Adam, the only others in the room. “What -- What happened?

Shiro heaved a huge sigh, the red jacket of Keith’s tuxedo hanging off his arm. “He fainted in the bathroom and --”

“You’re supposed to say I got into a fight,” Keith slurred tiredly.

“-- he broke his nose, busted his lip, and cracked his forehead.”

“M’fine…”

Lance gaped at his fiancé. “Jesus Christ, Keith, what the hell…?”

“Here, we’ll give you guys some privacy,” Adam cleared his throat and gently pushed Shiro out the room. “Holler if you need anything.”

“Yeah, thanks,” Lance called, almost numb. He hurried forward, sitting down on the edge of Keith’s bed and brushing his hair away from his eyes. “Good god, carniño. Are you okay? Are you in pain?”

Keith shook his head slowly. “‘M on a lot of painkillers apparently.”

“I can tell.”

“Mm, Lance?”

“Yeah?”

“Are we married?”

Lance chuckled and tried to brush away some of the dried blood. “Not yet, baby.”

“Damn. Told you we shoulda’ eloped,” Keith smirked, though his eyes were falling shut into half-lids.

“I don’t know if that would have minimized your fainting risk.” Lance paused. "How did you faint, anyway? Did you drink enough water? I told you to drink water."

"I'll have to listen to that for a whole lifetime. I wanted one day to not drink any water."

"And look where that put you."

Keith only smiled, his eyes still glazed over as he twirled their hands together.

“I just wanna be married to you already.”

Lance grinned, eyes suddenly watery, but he blinked it back. “Me too, mi amor . Soon. Once we get you oughta here. And when the cast comes off, cause that’s not going in the photos.”

Keith smiled slightly, but it slipped off his face as his eyes slipped fully closed. “‘M sorry I ruined the wedding.”

The grin fell off of Lance’s face too. “No, carniño , not your fault. It was a freak accident. You didn’t do it on purpose. You have nothing to apologize for.”

Keith cracked his eyes open slightly. “Really?”

“Yeah. We can always just go to the courthouse, like you said. And all the guests will understand that we can’t really have a wedding if one of the grooms breaks his face the morning of.”

“M’fine.”

“Sure you are, carniño .”

Keith lifted his head slightly. When he met Lance’s eyes, he smirked. “You’re so pretty.”

In response, Lance leaned in closer, mindful of Keith’s injuries, to gently cup the top of his head and press his lips to Keith’s. The other man groaned but didn’t pull away.

“Hey,” Lance whispered, pressing his forehead to Keith’s. “I’m so glad you’re okay. I love you so much.”

“I love you too,” Keith mumbled.

“Can’t wait to call you my husband. Mi esposo. Mi esposo guapo .

Keith blushed slightly and hid his face in Lance’s shoulder. Lance kissed his head.

"We're going to have an amazing life together, amor. Waiting a few more weeks won't change that."

"I know."

They found each other’s hands and laced their fingers together. The wedding might have been ruined or guests might have been angry, but they were okay, and they were together. To Lance, that was all that mattered.

Notes:

At this point, they'll just get married at the courthouse
