Work Text:
The hospital room was practically freezing, even compared to the chill in the almost empty halls of the coma ward. It was deathly silent, save for the beeping of machinery and the distinct clicking of heels on the tiled floor.
Mia Fey knocked on the doorframe as she entered, closing the door behind her. “Sorry I’m late today. Phoenix needed help studying up for a mock trial.” She chuckled. It wasn't long ago that Phoenix was falling over his own two feet for… She pushed the thought away. Now wasn’t the time.
She sat on the edge of the hospital bed and reached up to brush a white hair away from Diego’s face. “You look good as a silver fox, you know… Could use a trim though. I’ll have to let the nurse know on my way out. I’d do it myself but you’d kill me if I messed up.” She snickered, but her facade fell fast as her eyes landed on the dozen or so machines hooked up to her beau.
“... I’m sorry. I know I apologize every day, but it's all I can do. If I had been faster- If I had known what Dahlia was planning, I…” She trailed off as she felt hot tears on her face. She wiped them away quickly and cleared her throat. “... Yeah. I know. I’m not allowed to cry yet. It's not over. Even with the conviction, we’ve still got a battle left to fight. So don’t you give up on me, Armando. We’re partners, you hear me?” She gave one of his cold hands a squeeze.
“I’m not giving up either. We’ll get through this together. You’ll wake up, and we’ll leave Grossberg and start our own firm. Fey & Armando. Or- Maybe just Armando…” Her cheeks flushed pink at the thought of the engagement ring she’d found in one of his drawers. “... My answer is yes, by the way. I guess that’s another thing we’ll have to plan for when you get out of here. Maya’s gonna be thrilled.” She smiled, bittersweet. “Between the two of you, I’ll never have the right opinions on food. You’ll love her, I just know it.”
The door opened behind her, and she jumped a bit. One of the regular nurses had peeked in. “Evening, Ms. Fey. Sorry to interrupt. We just need to do a vitals check.”
Mia gave them a nod. “No, that's okay. I was just leaving. If anything changes, my number should be in his file.” She looked at Diego again as she spoke, drinking in his appearance. She hesitated for a moment before bringing his hand up to kiss his knuckles. “See you soon, okay? I love you.”
With that, she stood up and brushed off her skirt. “Alright. That’s all from me. Have a good rest of your shift.” She waved to the nurse as she slipped out of the room.
“You have a good evening, Ms. Fey.”
Mia stopped a few steps down the hall. “Oh– And before I forget. Could you have someone cut his hair? He hates having it too long.”
“We’ll get someone on it first thing tomorrow.”
“Great! Thank you.” She continued on her way, tugging her coat tighter around her shoulders. Truth be told, it was good that a nurse had shown up. Mia had been known to fall asleep at Diego’s bedside on more than one occasion. It was hell on her back and her commute to the office.
Though if she had to choose between that and another lonely night in her apartment, she’d choose the backache in a heartbeat.
