Summary
Given months of anguish and self-application, hearts have been known to slowly but surely remove from hopeless, if noble, attachments. The journey can be a wretched and revealing whirlwind—to the two lovers involved, that is. To society at large, to the onlookers and the whisperers, it can seem lifeless and lacklustre.
Unsurprisingly, when watchful eyes in Devon and Dorset realise their expectations of a grand romance between Colonel Brandon and Marianne Dashwood are not to be, disappointment abounds. Fortunately for the colonel, his (apparently shocking) new dear one has fortitude and forbearance in spades.
