As Ren's body exploded in a shower of his gear and materials he carried with him, Pearl's breath hitched in her throat. The process of gathering his things and depositing them in a chest was automatic, even though her hands were shaking. She had to be quick - he was streaming, this was risky, he could be back at any second and everyone would hear -
"I was serious," she said, her voice sort of wavering in her throat. Gem's character paused, and she heard through the mic the way she hissed through her teeth. She continued, "Gem, I'd marry you-"
"Pearl," Gem said, and Pearl could hear her swallow. "Not now. Please, just... Not right now."
"Alright," she breathed, and heard the tell tale sound of distant rockets firing. They were fast approaching, and Pearl risked whispering, at what she knew from experience was just barely loud enough for Gem and Gem alone to hear her, "I mean it. I love you."
There was a twitch of the character. Ren appeared in the sky, a distant dot, and - Gem bumped their characters together. A facsimile of a kiss, an answer without words that others could hear.
And, just in case anyone could see them now, Gem punched her.
"Owwww!" she cried out, all part of the routine. No one ever had to know what went on when the streams were off. It would stay between them, and their fans would never have to know.
