Work Text:

“Remind me as to why we are here again?” Akechi grumbled as he looked around the restaurant, mouth upturned with disapproval.

“It was your idea.” Akira replied evenly, trying to conceal his amusement. “You wanted an escape from your fangirls so proposed a deal with me to be your “boyfriend” as a cover. Surely you have not forgotten already?”

“No. I have not forgotten.” Akechi grimaced, recalling his past admirers who were all, quite frankly, terrifying beyond belief.

“Well then. Let us have a lovely date.” Akira's grin widened.

“If I did not know better, I would say that you are enjoying this, Akira.”

“I never denied this fact. Who would turn up the offer of a free meal and company as fine as yours?” He teased. “Only a fool, that is who.”

“Are you mocking me?”

“Perhaps.”

“Well, please cease doing so. This is an uncomfortable enough situation already.”

“And why is that? Do you not revel in my presence?”

“No.” Akechi said bluntly.

But his grouchiness only served to further fuel the flames of Akira's mockery.

“I would be offended if you weren't so darn handsome.” Akira said, flashing him a wink.

“Akira.” Akechi raised his hand in warning but Akira was not deterred in the slightest.

“Akechi.” He replied, fluttering his eyelashes brazenly.

Thankfully, before Akechi had chance to lean over the table and stab Akira with a silver fork, the waiter arrived, materialising out of nowhere.

“Evening, sirs.” He said, the epitome of politeness. “What would you like to order today?”

“Steak.” Akira answered instantly, taking no time to even mull over the options.

Akechi shot him a withering glare. He was not made of money! But instead of protesting aloud, he sighed inwardly.

“I will have the same.” He eventually said. “And two glasses of your finest carbonated beverage too, please.”

“And how would you like your steaks, gentlemen?”

“Well done.” They spoke in unison, to the amusement of their server.

“I see. Thank you, sirs. Your order will be with you shortly.” He said, bowing low before scurrying away in the direction of the kitchen.

“Steak.” Akechi said, sighing once more.

“Yes, steak. What is your problem? Are you secretly a vegetarian and liking meat is just another one of your deceptions?”

“Another of my deceptions?” He echoed, frowning. “You make it seem like I am some sort of serial liar.”

“Well, you are on a date with me right now so you don't really have a leg to stand on.”

He grunted. “I guess so.”

“There is no guessing about it. Also...” Akira trailed off, trying to think how to word his next comment without inducing Akechi's ire.

“Also what?”

“Also, I know we are sat together but shouldn't we seem more...couple-like?” He ventured, smile still in place.

“And what does that entail?” Akechi asked, sounding extremely wary.

“You know.”

“I really don't.”

“Have you never been on a date before?”

“No.”

“Wow.” Akira gasped, stunned by his revelation. “Then let me elaborate. By 'couple-like' I mean, like a couple. A romantic couple. Hand holding and the like.”

“Do we really have to touch?” Akechi groaned.

“I only suggested hand holding, not full blown snogging.” Akira replied, ever so slightly offended. “I'm not that bad, surely?”

“Well...no....but....” He trailed off, beginning to blush, so slight at first that Akira barely noticed.

“But nothing.” Akira said, grasping Akechi's hands before he had the opportunity to protest. “Wow. They are so soft. Do you happen to moisturise?”

“It is bad enough you touching me without providing a commentary on it.” Akechi grumbled defensively. “And no, I do not moisturise. I just have generally soft skin.”

“You're lucky.” Akira said, voice full of admiration.

“But yours are similar, if not even softer.” Akechi blurted out, flushing due to his own admission. He had not meant to compliment Akira but it had flown out of his mouth unbidden and now he felt silly.

“I'm glad you think so.” Akira smirked but even he had a faint red tinge to his skin now.

“And here is your food!” The same waiter as before appeared, brandishing two large porcelain plates.

Both Akechi and Akira sighed in relief, having noticed the awkwardness that had been accumulating in the air which this oblivious man had sliced through, his words acting as a metaphorical knife.

Once the plates were on the table and both parties had cutlery in hand, they ignored one another. Instead, they chose to focus entirely on their food and not the embarrassing atmosphere.

“Mmmmm!” Akira groaned in delight after having a mouthful of that expensive meat. “This is delicious!”

Akechi displayed his agreement by raising his hand in the air in a thumbs up gesture.

Far too soon, the food had been eaten and the beverages – which had arrived soon after – had also been consumed.

“That was delightful.” Akira murmured, looking extremely content.

“Delightful indeed.” Akechi echoed, his stature almost identical to that of his companion.

“Shall we do this again?” Akira asked, once they were stationed outside of the restaurant, standing in the mostly empty street.

“Of course. Couples don't only have one solitary date, after all.” Akechi replied, the combination of food and company putting him in a rare cheery mood.

“Well then, I look forward to the next time.” Akira said before planting a chaste kiss on Akechi's hand.

Akechi stared at said hand in shock. Akira's skin had been soft but his lips were even more so.

“F-farewell!” He managed to stutter, averting his gaze so Akira was oblivious to the effect that he had upon him.

This was supposed to be a fake relationship yet it was one of the best scenarios Akechi had ever experienced. And this was only date number one. The thought of having any – many! - more made his heart hammer in his chest. This dating deception was going to be more interesting than he had ever envisioned. Akira had been the absolute perfect choice of partner, it seemed!

“Until next time!” Akira answered, waving as he walked away, leaving Akechi alone with his slightly lustful thoughts.
