Adora shot upright, a scream tearing out of her. "No!"
Oh, stars, not again… Groaning, Catra shoved herself upright. Her hand found Adora's arm and held on. "Hey… hey, Adora, it's okay," Catra croaked, rubbing her eyes. "It's fine, we're fine, no one's dead... I think."
Adora gasped for air, her hands scrabbling at the sheets. "B-but Horde Prime–"
"Is gone, remember?" Catra bit back a yawn as she stretched, her tail curling around Adora's leg. "You beat him."
"I… I did?"
The question was so painfully hopeful that it actually hurt. Catra finally pried open her eyes to look at her girlfriend, who was bent over in bed, blue eyes brimming with tears.
"You did," Catra said, rubbing her hand up and down Adora's arm. She retracted her claws, just to make sure she didn't accidently nick Adora. "You kicked his sorry behind all the way to the next solar system."
Adora sniffled, running a hand through her wild hair. "He's gone?"
"Yeah." Catra leaned her forehead against Adora's head, a soft purr working its way out of her chest. "He's gone."
Adora sat there, breathing hard as tears slipped down her face. "Catra… I… I thought you died," she whispered, voice breaking. "That everyone…"
Catra's hand tightened around her arm as her neck itched. He's gone. "It was just a nightmare."
"B-but I wasn't able to–" Another sob wrenched out of Adora as her hands grasping at her shirt. She pulled at the fabric, fingernails no doubt digging into the skin underneath. "Wait, the Heart, I–I have to–before everyone–"
Catra grabbed her hand, pulling it away so Adora couldn't hurt herself. "Yes, you did. You saved everyone, idiot, remember?" Catra rolled her eyes. "Stars, you'd think your almost sacrifice would be a little more memorable."
Adora blinked fast as she shook her head. "No, I didn't… Did I? But did everyone–"
"Everyone's fine, Adora. Sparkles and her man are in the room next to us, Entrapta in the next door down, then the jerky mermaid and infuriating captain, and blah, blah, blah, everyone's fine. All alive. All still in one piece and fully in control of our minds." Catra shook Adora's hand around, raising an eyebrow. "See?"
Adora finally stilled, her brow pinched as she stared at Catra's hand wrapped around her wrist. Catra sat patiently (or as patiently as she could, since she was bursting with nerves and exhaustion) as Adora looked at herself, around their room, then at Catra.
"Catra?" she whispered, blue eyes shimmering in the low light.
"Yeah, it's me." Catra let go of her wrist and curled into Adora's side. Purrs ran up and down her spine as Adora leaned into the hug. "You back with me?"
"I… I think so." Adora pressed her face into Catra's hair. She shuddered as her arms wrapped around Catra. "I'm sorry I freaked out."
"It's okay." Catra yawned, her tail flicking back and forth. Stars, she was tired. "Just don't do it at three in the morning next time."
Adora chuckled, pressing a kiss to Catra's forehead. "I can do that."
"Good." Catra slumped backwards, pulling them into the mattress. Adora let out a shout, but Catra just snuggled close to her girlfriend. "Stop moving," she grumbled.
"Fine, bossypants," Adora shot back.
After some shifting around and quiet arguing, they settled into a comfortable position. Their legs tangled together as their hearts beat in unison, so soft and safe. Adora's arms curled loosely around Catra's body, an invitation to come closer.
And, of course, Catra did.
She sighed as she breathed in the scent of Adora, or safety, of home.
We're okay. We're finally okay.
"Go to sleep, Princess," Catra drawled, even as a smile tugged on her lips. "I'm tired."
And Adora laughed, breathless and scared, but still so Adora, it had Catra's insides lighting up like the night sky. "Alright, Captain, I will," Adora breathed, pulling Catra closer. "Goodnight, Catra."
Catra smiled as she listened to Adora's heartbeat, steady and strong… Safe, healthy, happy… and there. Adora was here. She was here with Catra. They were together. And when push came to shove… that was all that really mattered.
Even if it meant waking up at three in the morning to deal with nightmares, Catra was glad she got to spend the rest of her life with Adora.
"Goodnight, idiot," she whispered back.
And the star-filled night slipped into peaceful silence.
