Work Text:
Izuna stares hard at the coals smouldering in the irori, refusing to meet his brother's eyes.
"Izuna." Nii-san touches the back of his hand gently - so much more tender than they usually are with each other - and he controls the urge to flinch away. "Izuna, I'm sorry."
Of course nii-san is sorry, Izuna is sorry, they're all sorry.
It's just that they're sorry about different things.
"I'd never have asked Tobirama to marry me if I'd known about this, you have to know that." Nii-san's hand is a trap, keeping him here, and Izuna would give almost anything to be able to escape. "I - we - would never have put you in this position."
"I wouldn't have wanted that for you, nii-san." Izuna shakes his head slowly, knowing there can only be truth between them now. "You're happy, both of you. How could I have lived with myself if I'd prevented that?"
"How can I live with myself knowing I've made you just as unhappy?" Nii-san sounds just as miserable as he feels, and Izuna curses himself.
If only he hadn't developed these, these, these stupid feelings.
Ugh.
Why does he even have to have emotions at all!
"I feel like a fool for not seeing this before." Nii-san is quite obviously cursing himself just as hard and Izuna gives into the tug of his brother's arm, letting himself be pulled into a familiar embrace. "What can I do to make this better?"
"Pretend you never noticed." It's a question with an easy answer, and Izuna gives it without thinking. It's what he's wanted for over a year now, after all. "Don't tell Tobirama."
"I can't do that." Nii-san tucks him even closer, until they're pressed together from hip to shoulder.
"We can't." Tobirama's voice sounds from over their shoulders and Izuna shudders as stupidly long arms wrap around them both. "Izuna. You know I'm bad at pretending."
Yes, he does know that. It's why he never wanted Tobirama to know, nii-san either.
"There's nothing that can be done." He touches the pale fingers that have come to rest over his heart, a heart they claimed long ago. "You're married to my brother. I just have to... live with that."
"Or you could live with me," Tobirama points out gently. "With us. As my other husband."
Izuna jerks, instinctively looking up only to find his brother smiling ruefully at him.
"I'm willing to, if you are." Nii-san leans down, brushing their lips together in the gentlest of kisses. "I don't mind sharing, not if it's with you."
"... I'm not dreaming am I?" Izuna eyes them both suspiciously. "You didn't genjutsu me, did you?"
"Not unless I did it to myself as well." Tobirama huffs a soft laugh, and leans in to claim his own kiss. "And you know I'm even worse at that."
Izuna turns into his rival, into the man he knows as well as himself, and feels his brother's warmth against his back.
If this is a dream, then he doesn't want to wake up.
Ever.
