Work Text:
I saw you, just another face,
A means to an end, in this cursed place,
Used you, drained you, stole from the blind,
You were nothing more than a fleeting find.
But when you collapsed, breath shallow, eyes dim,
Something stirred deep inside me, within.
Not guilt, not pity—but a strange pull,
A flicker of light, though this world is cruel.
In that moment, I saved you,
Though I told myself it was nothing new,
Brought you home, let you rest,
But in truth, you were different from the rest.
I sold you out—betrayed your trust,
To Maine, to the crew, it was simply a must,
But as you stayed, you began to prove,
That even here, something pure could move.
You joined us, became part of the team,
I watched as you lived, caught in a dream,
We fought together, bled side by side,
And slowly, my walls began to slide.
Your eyes held a kindness that I had long forgot,
You believed in a world where peace could be sought,
And as we spoke of my dream of the moon,
I found myself yearning for something new, too soon.
I saw the pain hidden behind your smile,
How the city, the violence, eroded your style,
I wanted to pull you away from the fight,
To save you from the creeping cyberpsych bite.
But you fell deeper, augmenting with steel,
Each upgrade chipped away what was real.
I told you my past—my haunted tale,
Hoping, just hoping, we could prevail.
But my dream of the moon seemed far away,
And you, my David, drifted day by day.
Even as you tried to save me, I knew,
That the cost was more than either of us could chew.
You fought for me when I begged you to stop,
I watched as your body and mind began to drop.
You clung to my dream, though it had changed,
All I wanted was you—not this life prearranged.
Your final stand—your sacrifice,
You gave everything to buy me my slice,
Of that distant moon, that shining light,
But without you, it’s an endless night.
Now I stand here, so far away,
The stars look down in a cold array.
I have my moon, but it’s empty, you see,
For what’s a dream without you with me?
I remember you, your innocent gaze,
Before the city tore you into the blaze,
And though you’re gone, I’ll always hold,
The memory of your love, forever bold.
Here on this moon, I think of you still,
The boy I met, whose heart, despite the kill,
Stayed pure until it broke apart,
And left me alone, with an aching heart.
I loved you, David, through it all,
Through the rise, the fall, the final call.
Though you’re gone, you’re never far,
In my dreams, you’re still my star.
