Humanity

Summary:

A poem about David's story of survival, love, and sacrifice. He starts as a young man trapped in the brutal streets of Night City, losing his mother and himself to the harsh realities of a cybernetic world. His love for Lucy becomes his driving force, even as he loses his body and mind to cybernetic enhancements. In the end, he gives everything to protect her, finding solace in knowing she is safe, even as the city claims him.

Work Text:

Born in the shadows of a city of sin,
Where the rich ride high and the poor cave in.
I grew up in alleys, in streets full of screams,
Where survival’s a curse and hope’s just dreams.

School was a cage, the kids looked down,
Rich boys laughed as I wore my frown.
But Mom—she worked hard, she fought for me,
Told me I was something—someone to be free.

Then she was gone, just blood on the floor,
Her body broken, dreams crushed at the core.
My world shattered, my path went black,
No more future, no turning back.

I took the sandevistan, burned with rage,
Used it to settle, to set the stage.
My fists spoke the pain I couldn’t bear,
Tore through the world without a care.

Then I met her—Lucy, a vision of ice,
A trap wrapped in beauty, a lure to entice.
She used me at first, pushed me too far,
But when I fell, she caught my scar.

She patched me up, gave me breath,
Saved me from the city’s grasp of death.
I showed her my heart, something soft and pure,
But I was sold out—betrayed for sure.

Yet I stayed with Maine, I found a crew,
A broken family, but something new.
Maine was the father I’d never known,
And Lucy—the woman who made me feel home.

We ran through the streets, in blood, in fire,
I found love in a world of wire.
But as I rose, more fell to the fight,
I saw Maine break, lose his might.

I watched him fall, I watched them go,
One by one, through endless woe.
And all that was left was Lucy and me,
So I swore, I’d make her free.

I took the upgrades, I became the machine,
I sacrificed my soul, unseen.
Each piece of metal that fused with bone,
Took a piece of me—I was never alone.

But my mind broke too, my body screamed,
The city laughed while Lucy dreamed.
I told myself, I’d give her the moon,
But I was fading, far too soon.

Her dream had changed, she only wanted me,
But I was too lost, too blind to see.
I wanted to save her from the dark,
While she begged me to stay, to leave my mark.

I fought through the pain, through the cyberpsych flare,
All for her—my last repair.
In my final stand, I faced the night,
Knowing I’d never make it right.

But I smiled as death called my name,
My tired soul leaving the game.
I did it all for her, my guiding star,
Even if I’d gone too far.

Now I rest in shadows, no more war,
No more fighting, no need to endure.
I gave her the moon, even if I couldn’t stay,
But her love—I took with me, away.

In death, I’m free, from this broken place,
But I’ll never forget her, her touch, her face.
In the city of ghosts, I found my peace,
My heart still beats, though my life has ceased.
