Work Text:

Patrick is a fun drunk, well at least now he is, not so much a decade or so ago but let's not talk about that. Right now he’s 4 drinks deep at Andy’s wedding and he’s loving it. Pete watches as his boyfriend works the room, all smiles and giggles talking about god knows what. A dopey smile creeps onto his face when Patrick flashes a look to him.

A while later Pete is getting a drink of his own when arms wrap around his waist and a warm body is pressed into his back, he flinches a little and the person laughs. He reaches his free hand down to meet the others, “that’s not funny ‘Trick, that scared me.” Patrick starts to sway them back and forth and says, “mmm sorry.” He leans into the touch but says, “yeah sure,” and Patrick giggles softly. After a moment of bathing in the touch and silence Pete turns around and leads them back to the floor. They sway back and forth some more and share the drink, “I think we should do this,” Patrick says out of the blue. Pete pulls him back a little and raises a brow at him, “do what?” Patrick’s glossy eyes scans his face while letting a constant uhhhh, “do what honey?” Pete tries again. Fuck it now or never I guess, “have a wedding, get married,” Patrick says in low whisper kinda hoping Pete didn’t hear it. But Pete has the widest grin possible on his face so he definitely did, “really?!” “Y-yeah, yeah,” and Patrick has the softest smile on his face and god he loves this man so much, he grabs his face and kisses him hard, “okay, okay but I think Andy and Meredith would kill you if you actually proposed right now.” Patrick shakes his head, “I don’t have a ring or anything yet, also I could totally take them.” Pete moves his hands to his shoulders, “no, no you couldn’t. You’re drunk, let’s get you some water.” As they start to walk away Pete realizes Joe has been staring at them this whole time, don’t you dare say anything he mouths to him, he throws his hands up in defense and starts to walk away.

They’re both sober by the time they get two sleep, previous clothes piled on the floor and now just in new underwear. Pete stays up longer relishing in the fact Patrick actually wants to marry him. (Holy fuck!) Well that’s until Pete’s brain gets all Pete’s brain-y and says no he doesn’t. He was just drunk. He’s never marry a fuck-up like you. With that he just buried his head into Patrick’s chest more and tangles their legs, Patrick wraps an arm around his middle and he’s asleep in minutes.

The next few days would go like this: Pete would walk around with a beaming smile on his face for hours at a time and then it would just full stop and he would mope around for a while. Patrick couldn’t tell what it was about, he took his meds, they were working or seemed to be, Andy’s wedding just happened so he should-Andy’s wedding. Everything clicks into place. He didn’t remember at first that he’d told Pete he wanted to marry him. He meant it, he really really did, he’s wanted to for the last year and half, just hasn’t been man enough to do it. The ring was sitting in the home studio where Pete can’t find it even though he rarely goes in there. And it’s been a few days now and Pete’s overthinking it.

He goes into the living room and Pete’s sitting on the couch, lips pressed into a thin line and brows furrowed. He slips next to him and faces him, “hey, look at me.” Pete completely readjusts to where they are sitting face to face, “yeah?” Patrick takes his hands in his and rubs circles into the back of them, “I meant it y’know?” Patrick nearly rolls his eyes when Pete asks him what he’s talking about but he knows he just needs reassurance. “I want to marry you. I really do. You don’t have to get so lost in your head about it.” Pete tears his eyes away from him, “I just thought…you were drunk and just- I don’t know.” Patrick presses a swift kiss to his lips and laughs, “you’re so stupid, I love you.” Pete looks offended and Patrick laughs again, “God I’m going to love your face when I propose.” Pete just giggles and kisses him back.

It’s a week later and Pete knows he just knows. He knew from the moment he woke up and saw Patrick who was magically up before him smiling at him. He knew when Patrick actually offered to make breakfast this morning. He knew when Patrick put his hair into braids. He knew when Patrick suggested they walk the city instead of driving everywhere, making some excuse about the roads being busy. He knew when they went to his favorite restaurant and Patrick’s favorite ice cream place via Pete’s suggestion. He knew when they walked onto the beach when the sunset was just right. So now Patrick is on one knee in the sand, reaching in his pocket and pulling out a tiny black box, and saying those 4 words. Pete leans down, cupping his hands to the face, and presses their foreheads together, “yes.”
