Work Text:
Dean snuck into his bedroom. As he expected, Cas was lying in bed asleep. He closed the door as quietly as possible and slowly felt his way in the dark to the edge of the bed. His eyes adjusted as he stripped off his flannel and jeans, standing there in only his t-shirt and boxers.
He silently admired Cas’ sleeping form. The way the crinkles around his eyes and mouth smoothed out in his sleep. The way small snores escaped his mouth every few breaths. The way his hair was splayed across the pillow.
Dean felt the familiar tug in his heart whenever he looked at Cas. Pure love and adoration. How he deserved Cas, he’d never know, but he knew better than to question it.
Dean pulled back the blankets and crawled in next to Cas. Cas stirred, not fully awake, but somewhat aware of Dean climbing into bed. Dean curled up against Cas’ side and rested his head on Cas’ chest. He let out a long, relaxed sigh.
Cas stirred again, his arm reflexively going to Dean’s waist, his other hand reaching for Dean’s hand lying over Cas’ heart.
Dean wrapped his hand around Cas’, his fingers touching the cold metal band nestled on Cas’ ring finger. Dean brought Cas’ hand to his mouth and kissed his knuckles. Feeling the metal against his skin calmed him and reminded him of their commitment—their promise to stay together through hard times.
Cas had been wrong, the happiness was in the having. To have and to hold. That’s all Dean wanted after having wasted the better part of the day arguing.
“You came to bed,” Cas whispered, startling Dean from his thoughts.
“Of course I did,” Dean replied, cuddling closer to his husband.
“It took me forever to fall asleep without you here.” Cas sounded sad and that tore at Dean’s insides.
“I’m so sorry, angel. I shouldn’t have let you go to bed without me apologizing. I was acting like a jackass today.”
“Yes, you were. But so was I.” Cas reached up and started playing with Dean’s hair. It was long enough now that he could tuck it behind Dean’s ear. “We can talk about it in the morning. Right now I just want to go to sleep with you in my arms.”
“You’re such a sap,” Dean teased. But he turned his head and laid a tiny kiss on Cas’ chest. “I love you so much.”
“I love you too, husband,” Dean could hear the humor in Cas’ voice.
“How many times do I have to tell you that ‘husband’ isn’t a pet name?” Dean could hardly get the words out through his muffled laughter.
“Go to sleep, Dean,” Cas planted a kiss on top of Dean’s head. Dean let out a happy sigh and fell asleep to Cas drawing patterns on his back.
