I Can Be Me

Summary:

People say far too often eyes are the window to the soul but when people see my ugly eyes, things change.
My beautiful eyes say nothing about Me. The window to my soul is through Me.

Work Text:

People say far too often
eyes are the window to the soul
but when people see my ugly eyes,
they see someone who:

cannot think
cannot speak
cannot decide
cannot feel
cannot simply be

People say far too often
eyes are the window to the soul
but when people see my broken eyes,
they see someone who:

Should be mocked
Should be hated
Should be exploited
Should be gone

Merely a thing which needs to disappear
for they see but the fragments of shells,
They cannot to see Me.

Me.

When I listen to them long enough
I do believe.
I am not soul at all.
I am an empty shell.
I am not real.
I am invisible.
I simply cannot be.

But.

My beautiful eyes say nothing about Me.
The window to my soul is through Me.

Me.

My creativity
My  humour
My passions
My joys

If the eyes were truly the window to the soul
people will see Me.

Me.

my existence
my mind
my consciousness
my thoughts
my being

They would see all the qualities which make me human.

Because. I. Am.

I can simply be Me.

Notes:

The hardest part of my life is self- acceptance. I do exist and not merely for the sake of others. Because I am disabled in so many ways, people overlook me. I don't exist to them. They decided my every step and choose what I will do thinking I cannot do this myself because I cannot see. How could I possibly make a decision if I don't have eyes?! They believe this, yet I prove them wrong. I CAN!
Just because I can't see or walk well doesn't mean I don't deserve a life of autonomy in my own way. I know I need help but there are things I'm capable of accomplishing-independently.
