Work Text:
Four and X were eating watermelon slices together on the hotel roof, as it was summer and far too hot to stay in the kitchen any longer.
X had his legs dangling off the side of the roof, swinging contentedly as he munched on his slice. Four was sitting next to him, leaned against him with his legs sideways, not a care in the world except trying to not drip watermelon juice on his snuggle buddy.
They had been working in the kitchen together for most of the whole day, cooking up a storm, but the small, enclosed space gets rather hot when the oven or stove is on for a while. Especially in the summer. So, they sliced up some ripe, juicy watermelon, as it was just now in season, and carried up a big container full to the roof to watch the sunset together with refreshing snacks.
The day’s challenge was over and all of the contestants had gone off to putter around, explore Goiky or chat with friends, so Four and X were completely alone, assured nobody would come looking for them for at least a little while. Pure bliss.
The two watched the sky above turn from bright blue to light yellow to baby pink with golden orange streaks, not saying much as they were quite tuckered out from all the hard work it took cooking all the food.
They didn’t need words anyhow, all they needed was each other, and the roof, and the watermelon, and the bright, beautiful sky casting slow shimmers over the two’s faces. Hardly any clouds, either. It was a perfect night in every stretch of the imagination.
Four stretched out his legs and lay down on the roof, using X’s thigh as a pillow. X moved him slightly farther away from the edge of the roof so he wasn’t in danger of slipping.
“Thanks, X…” Four mumbled sleepily.
“No problem, Foury.” X responded, looking at the other’s eyes lovingly. He took another bite of his watermelon, dripping juice down from on top of the roof. There weren’t any contestants down there, so he didn’t mind. Four’s slice sat abandoned on the roof next to them, as he had already fallen asleep right there.
X silently stroked Four’s nub, gentle enough to not wake him up, but soothing enough to make him sigh with content in his sleep. X stopped swinging his legs, as the motion might wake Four, who was using his thigh as a pillow and was quite a light sleeper.
X wondered what Four was dreaming about. He often had nightmares, but X had a feeling that wouldn’t be the case here. It was impossible to have a nightmare in such a comforting environment. Plus, Four was smiling in his sleep and only twitching slightly. If he was having a nightmare, he would probably be shaking uncontrollably or sleep-talking like he usually did. X had learned how to recognize when Four was having a nightmare so he could comfort him. He was the only one who could calm him down after one happened. Four didn’t trust anybody quite like he trusted X.
As X finished the last slice of watermelon in the container (minus the one that Four had left on the roof, as it was too dusty to eat), he quietly packed up the rinds and put the lid back on the container. At least, he tried to be quiet, but the snapping of the lid awoke the sleeping number, who looked up at X with the dazed and confused eyes of somebody who had just woke up from a nap and didn’t know where or when they were.
“Hi, Foury! Did you have a good nap?” X asked pleasantly. It was hard not to be pleasant in such a beautiful and safe place.
“Yeah.” Four replied. He was very out of it and clearly needed to go back to sleep. “I’m going to our room now.”
“Oh, I’ll come too! Just let me finish packing up the melon!” X added. After he had finished packing the watermelon rinds back into the original container they used to carry them up to the roof in the first place, they snuck back down to their shared room, careful to not make too much noises as the hotel’s residents were currently sleeping, it was around 11pm at this point.
They held each other’s hand and tried to suppress their giggles as they crept back to their room. X quickly dumped the watermelon grinds in the kitchen’s compost on the way there, and they luckily managed to get al they way back to their room without awakening any contestants.
X brushed his teeth and slipped into bed first, his side being closer to the wall and patiently waited for Four to finish brushing his teeth and join him. When he did, they began cuddling wordlessly, as they did every night, and fell asleep quite quickly. The sound of leaves rustling through the yellow trees outside was the only noise that filled the room, aside from the hushed breathed of the two sleeping algebraliens on their queen sized mattress. All was good.
