Chapter Text
It was early in the morning and students were now arriving to their assigned classrooms. Once the bell rang every student were sitting in their assigned seats. Aizawa, who was laying on his sleeping bag in the floor began to stand up; “okay class, the school has brought a health educator and I expect all of you to be in your best behavior” he said in his usual monotone voice while climbing back to his sleeping bag.
“Aw man this sucks” Kaminari groaned out as he laid his head down onto the desk. The bakusquad sighed and agreed with him except for a spiky haired boy. Iida hearing this started chopping his arms in the air while lecturing Kaminari on why health was important in their case; but it was cut short when the door slid open, at this the class stopped whatever they were doing and stared as a young looking woman entered the class with papers in hand. “Good morning!” She said cheerily as she set the papers in the teacher desk.
The class quickly replied with a good morning as well. When there was silence once again she began talking “My name is Saki; as you know I’m a health educator and today I will be taking about seizures/epilepsy” she informed while smiling politely. At this Kaminari, who was doodling in a piece of paper stopped what he was doing and looked at Saki bewildered. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing, felt anxious and excited at the thought of someone teaching students about the topic. You see; none of the schools he’s ever been to (which have been a couple) ever talk about this, something he was born with and deals with in the daily.
“Now who here nows what a seizure is?” she asked clamping her hands together looking around the classroom. At this, most people who has heard the word or knew what it was raised their hand up; Kaminari included. “That’s good!” Saki exclaimed. “For those who don’t know what a seizure is; Normally, your brain sends signals through your nervous system in a predictable, organized way. But sometimes, these signals get mixed up and cause a seizure. You might experience a seizure as a sudden change in how your brain works. It's like a burst of electrical activity that disrupts your normal brain function. This can cause you to feel confused for a short time, have uncontrollable movements, stare blankly, or even lose consciousness altogether. Seizures can happen for many reasons, and they can be mild or severe.” Saki explains to the class.
She made sure to stop and ask the class if anyone had a question; when they replied with a no she continued.“The most common cause of seizures is a condition called epilepsy, a brain disorder that causes nerve cells in your brain to get mixed up.” With that she finishes. “Now I will be mentioning some of the causes of seizures; Sleep deprivation, fever, substance use, stress, flashing lights, poor nutrition, hormonal changes, and not following medication protocols are some of the most common seizure triggers.” She listed making a counting motion with her fingers.
“Now, who knows what to do during a seizure?” She asked looking around the class. Before Kaminari got the chance to raise his hand Iida beat him to it. “Yes?” She asked looking towards Iida “A person experiencing a seizure should be put onto their sides till the end of it” Iida exclaimed cupping his hand in the air. “Yes that’s correct; If someone around you has a seizure, roll them onto their side and place something soft under their head, making sure nothing is in their mouth. Speak to them in a steady, reassuring tone of voice. If they’ve never had a seizure before, the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes, or if they have trouble breathing or waking up after the seizure, call 911.” She informed the class.
Then she asked the question/part Kaminari was waiting for ever since she mentioned what today’s topic was;he felt like a child the day before Christmas. “Moving on, who here knows the types of seizures there are.” She asked looking around the class, expecting nothing out of the students due to them staying quiet with a focused puzzled face at the information they were receiving; but to her surprise there was a kid in the class who raised their hand with a big smile on their face.
Said kid was none other than Denki Kaminari; who had raised his hand faster than the speed of lightning. The class seeing this looked at Kaminari with a confused face because why would the person who was always having trouble in class and never participated in class by their own will be raising their hand to answer something they all thought he didn’t know about. Knowing him he was either going to say something dumb and offensive or make a fool of himself. But before anyone could say any to him Saki had asked for his answer.
“Yes?” She asked intrigued with what the student had to say. “There are three main types of seizures; which are Focal seizures, Generalized seizures and unknown-onset seizures. The Generalized seizures are, clonic seizures, Tonic seiuncures, Tonic-clonic seizures, Atonic seizures, Myoclonic seizures and Absence seizures. And the Focal seizures are; focal onset aware seizures and focal impaired awareness seizures; but overall there are more than 30 different types of seizures.” He said with the most genuine smile the class has ever seen Kaminari give. The class stilled flabbergasted with the amount of information that came out of Kaminari, they didn’t know who that was because there was no way that was Kaminari they were now looking at. Pretty much everyone had their jaws in their desks, even Bakugou stared in bewilderment with his mouth slightly gaped.
Saki was beyond impressed with the answer the student had given her, coming out of her shock she lightly laughed while clapping her hands “ Yeah! That is very correct, you couldn’t have put it more beautifully, what’s your name?” She asked very interested on who the student was. “Kaminari Denki” he said with a small smile “Well Kaminari, you seem to be well educated on this topic” she said with a smile of her own. “well yeah! I myself have epilepsy” he replied. “ I see, what types do you have?” She asked “oh! Um I experience Generalized seizures as well as absence seizures.” He answered back “Well, it’s good to know you are well educated on this” she told him with an understanding smile. Before they could talk about anything else they were interrupted by the bell.
“Looks like my times up, thank you for your undivided attention; before you go be sure to take a paper from the desk,it was a pleasure meeting you all.” With that she bowed her head and left. “She was nice” Kaminari was heard saying briefly, when he looked up he was met with the whole class was now looking at him as if he had grown two heads. “Do I have something on my face” he asked looking at the bakusquad for an answe. Breaking out of their trance Kirishima was the first to speak. “Dude you have epilepsy?” He asked “Yeah man you’ve never mentioned it to us” Sero added while Mina nodded “pft what are y’all on about”
But seeing their faces stay with a concerned look he figured out they were being serious. “You guys didn’t know?” He said genuinely curious “ of course we didn’t know, you never told us!” Jirou exclaimed “what do you mean?” Kaminari asked. “No. What do YOU mean Dunce face” Bakugou yelled, patience obviously out the window. “ well I thought you guys knew, given the fact I be having seizures all the time in front of you guys” he replied as If it were the most obvious thing in the world. “No you don’t, we would know” Mina said slowly. “Yes I do, matter of fact I literally had one yesterday after training” he retorted back.
At this point everyone was looking back at their memories to see if anyone had noticed Kaminari having a Seizure, A seizure! But nothing, absolutely nobody could recall that happening. Kaminari sighed “You guys call it “Whey mode”” he said looking around to everyone a second passed and then all hell broke loose. “WHAT?!” Kaminari felt uncomfortable with all the attention he had now; he felt a wave of recognition of the situation. He’s been here before; back in middle school when his classmates at that time learned that he had epilepsy ; and that didn’t end up pretty. All the excitement and confidence with the situation quickly faded in a matter of seconds; he felt his heart accelerating.“Wait! You mean to tell me we’ve been making fun of you all this time while you were having seizures?” Jirou exclaimed “yeah… but it’s okay! Don’t worry about it” he said trying to get out of the center of attention.
“Don’t worry about it?! Kami this is serious.” Mina said voice full of worry. “Yeah man, you cannot just drop a bomb and expect us to say nothing.” Sero backed up. “Why didn’t you tell us?” Kirishima asked, to which most of the class nodded along. “I…” was all Kaminari said, stopping himself when he felt a sting in his throat, now playing with the hems of his school blazer with shaky hands. He decided to simply shrug and look away from his classmates eyes. A few seconds passed and he felt the tension of the room rise; putting the best smile he could at the moment which was shaking slightly downward, he looked slightly up to the bakusquad and said “I don’t… I’m gonna…” he said pointing at the door while backing away to go grab his stuff. With that he left the classroom hurriedly leaving the class in complete shock, guilt and worry.
