“Raven!”
I can hear him yell my name.
“Raven! Oh my god, Raven!”
He’s on the brink of sobbing. I can hear his unsteady breath. It’s ragged as he tries not to choke on his tears. I can’t see him.
“Raven, say something!”
A pair of warm arms wrap around my limp body. He’s bringing me closer to him. The heat radiating off him starts to engulf me as he grows closer. All I can do is give him a weak breath as a sign I’m still alive. I begin feeling wetness on my forehead.
“Please… I’m begging you.”
His voice is so soft and sounds crushed. I’ve never heard him sound like this before. He was usually so confident and excitable. The sturdiness he expressed seemed like it could never waver, but now I knew that hadn’t been as true as I thought. He was scared.
I wasn’t sure what he was scared of, though. My empathy felt dim. I haven’t felt my powers be so muted before.
“Please… don’t leave me.”
The sobs he was producing became louder. He was losing his cool. Whatever hope he was holding onto seemed to be slipping from him. I don’t understand why. Why be worried about me? He should be more worried about himself…
Then there was silence.
When I opened my eyes next, the overstimulating noises I had last heard were gone. It was eerily silent compared to the alarms that had been screeching and the flames that burned furiously. I felt dizzy as I tried grounding myself in reality.
I must have passed out from the pain , I thought to myself.
Gazing around, my eyes settled on a forest green hand holding my own on my left side. Tracing the outline of that hand led me to rest my eyes on a certain pointy-eared teammate of mine who was in a deep sleep. It was Beast Boy, aka Garfield Logan, and he was out of uniform wearing lots of bandages. The white straps went around his arms and led up his sleeves where I couldn't see where they ended. He must have taken a major beating during the battle.
The battle I know the team must have lost. I had been their last hope, and I know I failed them. My dark magic had been deflected and used against me. How could I not see that coming? I should have been quicker and smarter. I should have planned my moves more carefully, but it happened all so rapidly. Everyone had been taken out by their abilities; what made me think I would be any different?
My thoughts were interrupted by a sudden purr coming from somewhere. It was easy to guess where it was coming from, and my suspicions had been right when I saw Garfield pressing the side of his face onto the top of the hand he was holding. His eyes were now open and looking back at me. He must have awakened from his slumber while I was distracted.
“Rae,” Garfield spoke with a full heart, his purr making it hard for him to say much of anything else. His eyes looked like they wanted to tell me so much, yet I felt like he didn’t need to say anything for me to understand. My heart felt like it skipped a beat. How juvenile.
I tried to say a snarky comment I was thinking, but my throat felt scratchy. Well, it looked like that wasn't going to happen. All that came out of my parted lips was a painful groan. Garfield frowned as he noticed what I had tried to do. His purring grew louder as he moved up my arm to smother his face.
