Work Text:
The last thing Tony expected at 8pm on a Tuesday night when he was relaxing with Pepper was to be interrupted by a phone call from Peter Parker. Tony had warned him to call for emergencies only, and Peter was usually home from patrol now, so obviously he was concerned.
“Talk to me, Pete.” He said almost immediately after answering the phone, trying to mask his concern.
“Hi, um, I know you said only call for emergencies, but…” Peter began, not sure on how to form this conversation.
Tony sighed and rolled his eyes; his worry being replaced by annoyance. “Spit it out, Parker.”
“Can you venmo me some money for a burrito? I had to buy a new backpack and Aunt May already made dinner but-“
Peter was cut off by Tony. “Your metabolism. I get it, 40 enough?”
“Plus, my healing factor doesn’t work without energy.” Peter continued blabbing then paused. “40? 40 dollars?” He questioned in disbelief.
“What’re you healing?” Tony asked, sternly, concern returning.
“Just… a little flesh wound.” Peter lied.
“Try again.” Tony said, done with the boy’s lies.
Peter sighed and tried to think of a way to say it that wouldn’t freak him out. “Fine, I may or may not have been… shot at by a few guys.” He finally says.
“Shot at? A few? How many?” Tony demanded a response and Peter wasn’t going to deprive him of one.
“8… maybe 9.” Peter confirmed.
“Nine?!” Tony repeated in shock. “What made you think you could take on nine guys?”
“I don’t know, I was hungry I wasn’t thinking straight.” Peter said, shrugging it off like he always did.
Tony scoffed and tried to track the boy down to no avail. “Where are you? Your phone says you’re at the Washington Monument. Am I reading that right?”
“Huh, that’s where it went.” Peter said.
“Why didn’t you tell me you lost your phone?” Tony asked, annoyance only growing.
“I didn’t lose it!” Peter said defensively, then added. “I dropped it.”
“What, when you were saving your classmates?” Tony asked, curious.
“No.” Peter said it like it was obvious, which only aggravated Tony more. “I was getting a couple selfies for Ned.”
“I swear to god you give me grey hairs.” Tony muttered. “What’re you calling me from?”
“A payphone.” Peter added. “I had to steal some quarters from a fountain, do you think I’ll get in trouble?”
Tony sighed once again. “A payphone? Why didn’t you call me from your suit?”
“Me and Ned accidentally disabled it.” He couldn’t lie to the man again. “Okay, fine, it was on purpose. But you need to have more trust in me!”
Tony scoffed. “How am I supposed to trust you when you didn’t tell me that you got shot?”
Peter sighed, clearly tired of the argument. “What so now I’m supposed to tell you when I get shot?”
Tonys concern only increased at this. “Yes!”
“Wait, are you mad at me?” Peter asked.
Tony couldn’t even formulate a reply. “Am I- god, you know what? I’m sending a car to you, and you’re gonna get in it, come to the tower and we’re gonna have a conversation about relevant things to mention on a phone call, alright?”
Peter sighed again. “Fine. Can I still get my burrito?”
Tony ended the phone there, he had enough of the kid for now. He returned to the couch where Pepper was waiting for him and sat down with a huff. He didn’t get much peace as Peppers phone began ringing. An unknown number, yet they both knew who it was.
“Miss Potts? Is he mad at me?” Peter asked the second the line connected.
“Just a little.” Pepper said, sharing the man’s annoyance.
“He said I have to call him every time I get shot; you know how often I get shot?” Peter rolled his eyes, unknowing of the effect of his words.
“Peter Benjamin Parker, I swear-“ Pepper started, only to get cut off by Peter.
“Are you mad at me too?” Peter asked, confused as to why they were both mad.
“We can talk when you get here.” Pepper said sternly, trying to keep herself composed.
“Can you ask him if I can get my bur-“ He didn’t get to finish as Tony hung up Peppers phone.
Unsurprisingly, the car showed up to the payphone minutes later, and Peter got in. The familiar smell of cheeseburgers filled his senses and only made his stomach growl louder. He then noticed it was coming from a takeout bag on the seat beside him, and he eyed up the bag, practically drooling.
“No. Don’t even dare.” The driver, who Peter soon realised was Happy, demanded. “Not yet.” Peter sighed in annoyance and opened his mouth to argue but Happy was having none of it. “I swear to god, kid, one word out of you and it’ll be your last.” And with that Peter finally shut up, which helped him hear Happy muttering irritably. “Missed the tonight show now, great.”
Not long after, they arrived at the tower, and Peter hobbled to the elevator, bag in hand, up to the penthouse. He tried to prepare himself in the elevator, tried to imagine what they were doing now. He had a mini heart attack when the doors opened to reveal Tony and Pepper already stood there, and they looked pissed. Peter gulped and stepped out.
“Uh, hey guys.” He greeted meekly.
“Put the bag over here.” Tony told him, guiding the boy to the coffee table and gesturing to an empty armchair. “Sit.” Peter obeyed immediately and watched as the man ripped open the bag, throwing a burger to Peter and taking one himself. Pepper rejected hers as they both sat across from the boy, who was now eating his burger.
“Don’t get blood on my couch.” Pepper said, taking in the boy’s state.
Peter glanced down at his suit and smiled, trying to lighten the mood. “Uh, that’s been dry for a few hours now.”
Tony shook his head and sighed. “Why didn’t you call sooner? Even for that dumbass burrito?” He asked, genuinely curious.
Peter braced himself for the conversation as he finished the bite in his mouth. “Well, uh, remember that bag I was telling you about? I might’ve left it in the same alley and… misplaced it.”
“Your new one?” Tony asked, resisting the urge to scoff in his face.
“Yeah, yeah, that one. I was hungry and it had some money in it, so I went looking for it for an hour. Didn’t find it, then I called you.” Peter explained, hoping the explanation would somehow save him.
Tony stared at the boy in disbelief. “Let me get this straight, you lost your phone-“
“Dropped.” Peter interrupted but was immediately shut up by Peppers glare.
“And your new backpack? Are you serious?” Tony asked.
Peter shrugged; he didn’t really know what to say. “Maybe.”
Tony scoffed. “What am I gonna do with you?”
“Forgive me forever and ever?” Peter suggested hopefully.
Tony eyed him, showing he wasn’t up for the boys’ games right now. “No more patrol for a week.” Peters mouth opened in shock and Tony could sense backchat so put a hand up. “Or I tell May.”
Peter sighed like a sulky child, which he was. “Fine.”
“I’ll order you a backpack and your suit needs tweaking, so leave it here.” Tony demanded.
“But- my clothes are drenched in blood.” Peter said.
Tony groaned in annoyance and a little while later Peter re-entered with an AC/DC t-shirt and sweatpants. “You’re not keeping that shirt.” Tony pointed out, which Peter pouted at. “Fine, keep it you little stinker. Tell your aunt you’re sleeping at Nelsons and-“
“Neds.” Peter corrected once again.
“I swear to god, shut your mouth before I order a unicorn backpack.” Tony sighed. “Bedtime. I’m sick of you.”
“But its 9pm!” Peter argued.
“You’re confusing me with someone who cares.” Tony said.
After a lot of wearing down, Tony and Peter ended up on the couch watching a Star Wars movie, which Peter fell asleep to halfway through. A week later, he then received his suit back, but it now had pockets and all of Peter’s tweaks had been overridden, leaving him stuck on the Training Wheels Program until further notice.
