Work Text:

With the busy schedule he worked, eating healthy wasn't always an option for Alex, but on the occasion where he had the time to make a decent meal, he wanted it to be something good for himself. He often preferred to buy organic whenever he could. That being said, it really shouldn't have been much of a surprise when he started to insist on paying a visit to the local farmers market that they often passed by on the way home, but apparently it was, as Slade certainly had a few choice words to say as he was dragged along with him in the process.

“Is this all really necessary?” Slade complained, attempting to pull his arm away as he was continuously dragged about. “We have plenty of food at home, Alex. I don't see why we need to be here buying—”

“How many times do I have to tell you that those frozen television dinners you insist on eating don't count?” Alex cut in abruptly, finally releasing the tight grip he had on Slade's arm as he reached for a bag. “If you didn't whine so much about wastefulness, I would just throw them out. You need real food, Slade. Something with sustenance that isn't packed full of preservatives, and I don't even know what else.”

“Aren't you the biggest fucking hypocrite today? My television dinners are perfectly healthy, Alex.” Slade argued, seeming almost offended at the statements being made. “I may not have the highest standards for the food I consume, but at least I'm not a—”

However, before Slade really had the chance to complain, a smoothie was placed in his hand, similar to how one might give something to a child to keep them distracted, which effectively worked as the complaints abruptly ceased, giving Alex the chance to speak. It was something he had learned early on, and it never failed how easy Slade was to please.

“We won't be here long, alright? I just want to grab a few things for dinner and maybe get some things to make those smoothies you like so much.” Alex explained, knowing how much Slade loved those protein-based smoothies. “I know you like the ones with bananas and strawberries..”

With that, Alex proceeded to drag Slade around the market as he purchased a variety of different products, but it didn't take him long to take notice of the fact that somewhere during all this, Slade had found himself snacking on some kind of fruit-based cake that he seemingly took off some random table. He wasn't quite sure whether to be annoyed or fascinated by what he was witnessing.

“What?” Slade questioned between bites, having taken notice of the way Alex was staring at him. “Do I have something on my face?”

“You have to pay for that.” Alex acknowledged, still yet seeming in disbelief. “You don't steal food, Slade.”

“I didn't steal it. I bought it.” Slade argued, seeming annoyed with such an accusation being made. “I used your credit card, actually.”

In all truth, that really didn't surprise Alex as he handed the bags over to Slade to carry. He bought nearly everything when it came to Slade, with Slade even having a credit card of his own in his name.

“Why am I not surprised?” Alex sighed, shaking his head as he headed back towards the car. "Well, that should be everything.”

“I want another smoothie before we leave.” Slade mentioned, having just finished the one he was drinking. “Make it banana and chocolate.”

“Fine, Slade.” Alex sighed, deciding to just give in considering how cooperative he had been during all of this. “Just don't ruin your appetite. I'm making that stir-fry dish tonight.”

There was no denying just how much Slade loved those smoothies, and with that being said, he doubted that this would be the last time they'd be visiting the market because of it.
