Chapter Text
Chapter 1.
Deacon and Chase had been discussing plans for the upcoming book that they would be going into.
The only thing separating this book from the others was that Deacon had written it (with a little help from Bronze).
“Wait, you promise that there’s no prince that’s going to pick me up? I’m not going to have to sleep in a dungeon again am I?” Chase asked as he brushed his fingers over Deacon's book.
“No Chase, in this story you are a young woman with the ability to manipulate air, and I am your twin brother. Our goal is to find a stolen artifact before an evil sorceress does.”
Chase looked up at Deacon with a goofy smile stretched across his face. “You mean Buddy is going to a sorceress?”
What happened to obsessing over pop stars? Deacon looked down at the book. There was still time to rewrite it but he didn’t want to waste anymore ink otherwise Grandpa Ralph might get suspicious.
“Yeah, but don’t make me rewrite the story.” Deacon threatened emptily.
Deacon understood that his cousin liked Buddy but the last thing he wanted to do was encourage him. Buddy’s a stranger, no less a criminal (probably). They knew nothing about him and getting too close could only end up hurting someone.
“I wanna go into that book too! It sounds better than these lame kiddie books.” Prunella scoffed from the corner of the room.
Goldie sat on Pru’s hat patting her head with his little metallic hands. “Worry not Prunella, we shall have fun on our own time!”
Prunella looked at the pile of books Chase had
bought for her. “If by fun you mean learning about morals through little forest animals.”
“Prunella keep this up and you’ll be learning morals from little forest animals, and me!” Chase hissed.
Deacon nodded toward the book he wrote. There lie printed sheets of paper stapled together with a thin cardboard sheet covering the front and bottom of the book. On the top of the makeshift book cover Deacon had written “The Golden Mirror”. It wasn’t a very good title but it was his.
Under the title a small illustration beamed. Silver had drawn a small illustration of a mirror using Chases glitter pens and highlighters. She was very proud of her art so Chase had taken a photo using his polaroid camera and given it to Silver so she could paste it into her little house.
“Chase, are you ready?” Deacon asked.
“If Silver and Bronze are!” He replied eagerly.
“I’m ready,” Silver said, lifting her arms to motion Chase to pick her up. Bronze did not reply to Chase but he still stepped onto his hand along with his sister.
“Have fun!” Goldie shouted as Deacon and Chase started to shift into the book.
The book world was just as Deacon had expected it to be.
The sky was painted a dusty blue, and the breeze was calm. Wildflowers in all different shades of vibrant colors carpeted the forest floor while the tree's long branches touched the sky.
“Pretty…” whispered Chase.
He was wearing a salmon pink colored jumpsuit with a lavender shawl that had tiny flowers embroidered into the fabric. A pale bag was draped across Chase's shoulder as well.
“Thanks, Bronze helped me map out the scenery,”Deacon replied.
Chase shook his head slightly. “I was talking about Buddy” he sighed, attempting to cover his blushing face with his salmon pink sleeves.
How can anyone be attracted to that? Yeesh everytime I see him I swear he’s wearing less clothes. At least in this book he has a shirt on. Deacon thought, glancing out across to his left where Buddy sat leaning against a tree.
The young man was dressed in all black. When was he not?
He had a long black coat on which held embedded icey blue shiny stones that covered his shoulders and arms. Under the big coat a Gray tank top hid. Within the tanktops chest area there was an
opening. A boob-window is what Deacon assumed it was. Buddy's legs were covered in what
looked to be leather.
The only thing interesting about his outfit was a pair of shiny black boots that Deacon secretly wished he had.
Deacon stared down at his shoes. The typical loafers he wore in and out of stories. Other than that Deacon was impressed with his fit. Bronze wasn’t upset about anything from what Deacon had understood and had given him a nice white button up with ruffled sleeves and a simple but elegant pair of khakis.
Deacon also had a cloak that was very similar to Chases although Deacon's cloak was peach colored and had two layers. It was also a bit longer than Chase’s. Bribing Bronze with peanut butter filled pretzels was a win.
Deacon turned to Chase to give him the notes for the story but his cousin was not next to him.
“Chase!” Deacon called as he hurriedly followed after him. I haven’t even given him his notes yet and off he goes to find his pretend boyfriend.
“Missed me.” Buddy said smugly, leaning in close to Chase.
Chase just smiled, staring back longingly.
“Your notes, and make sure you actually read them this time.” Deacon said, handing over some note cards to Chase.
There it was. That feeling that someone was trying to tear into his spine with their eyes. If looks could kill.
Buddy stop looking at me like that.
“Uh… Chase when you're done, meet me over by the stream so we can begin the book.”
Chase shot Deacon a smile and turned back towards Buddy.
Maybe I should have written Buddy out of this book.
Deacon stood by the stream watching the water pool down over the large rocks.
He looked across to where Chase and Buddy still stood. It’s been 5 minutes. Can’t they flirt later or something.
Deacon scooped up a small pebble from the stream and began rolling it in his hand.
Finally! He thought as Chase had started skipping towards the stream.
“Hey man! So what are we doing at the stream?” Chase asked.
Did he not read the notes I spent 2 hours writing?
“While Aella, that’s you and her brother Iason are talking together by a stream they notice their family artifact is gone.”
Chase nodded as he listened to Deacon speak.
“The artifact is the golden mirror that was in my bag earlier, right?” Chase asked.
“Yes. The golden mirror is an artifact.”
Chase was now starting to look nervous.
“Okay that’s cool… what happens next because Buddy totally stole my bag a few minutes ago and I just realized it now…”
Of course he did. How was Buddy ahead of the book? I was the one to write this. He shouldn’t be able to beat me and my own game. Should he? Deacon's thoughts started to race. Maybe Ex Libris has a way of knowing the summary of a book before they enter.
“Deacon?” Chase said, pulling his cousin out of his thoughts.
“Oh right! Well we go on a journey to find the stolen artifact. You start by flying up and look to see which way the sorceress went.”
Chase looked back at Deacon with an odd expression.
“Fly? You want me to fly! Dorkin I don’t have any wings! I’m not a bird!”
Omg! Just look at your notes! I even told you before we started this book that you had the ability to manipulate air.
“Chase, you can manipulate air. That includes flying! In this book anyways.”
Chase stared back at his cousin, his eyes narrowed “If you say so, Dorkin.”
