Work Text:
It wasn't bad at first.
It started off with a few whispers of the word "kraut" from Wilhelm II's cousins, George V and Nicholas II.
Wilhelm ignored it at first, but it just kept getting worse, and he couldn't ignore the slurs anymore. They got more personal, more targeted.
"It isn't that big of a deal, Wilhelm" is what Woodrow Wilson would have said.
Wilhelm would just fake a smile and just agree with everything Woodrow said about Germanophobia, because it's really not that big of a deal, is it? It's not like there was a supremacist organization killing German people for fun, or German people being forced work on plantations for being German.
He tried to ignore all the slurs and jokes; he really did. But every night after every meeting, he would flop onto his bed, bursting into tears, thinking of all the xenophobia he experienced.
Some nights, Wilhelm would have a panic attack. Most of them were severe, making him gasp for air and his heart race all night.
And after those long nights, Wilhelm would pretend everything is fine and continue on the day like normal, because Germanophobia isn't really a big deal, is it?
