Most of the time, Neil was still too afraid to speak. He thought about all the times he had spoken at the wrong time and things had gone wrong, or all the times he and his mother had been caught because he hadn’t lied well enough. With these lips, he had condemned her to pain and, ultimately, death. These lips had pressed against the softest parts of Andrew’s skin and made promises and told lies. Everything had been done with these two lips and the words they formed, the shapes and sounds they made as they curved. Yet, right now, his lips wished Andrew could just read his thoughts because the truth was, Neil hoped he would never have to say any of this, these thoughts, out loud.
What he said, when he forced his voice out, was the one truth that would never — and always — kill him.
“I love you.”
