Work Text:
Bones walks up to Jim. “Hey,” he says. “You ready to go yet?”
Jim stares down at the tombstone of Admiral Pike. “No,” he says in a small voice. “I’m not ready to say goodbye.”
The doctor sighs and rubs Jim’s back. “I know,” he says. “But it’s getting late. We should go.”
The captain blinks and rubs his eyes. “I was mad at him the last time we talked," Jim confesses. "I should have told him how much I appreciated him instead.”
“He knew,” Bones says, taking his friend’s arm and pulling him away. “I promise you, he knew.”
