Recovery

Summary:

As Kakuzu is recovering from a hip replacement, Hidan takes care of him.

Notes:

Day 7: Therapy

For the last installment of KakuHida Week 2024, I thought I'd end it on modern au. Kakuzu would absolutely hate the idea of a hip replacement surgery and would do anything to save money even have Hidan study exercises he needs to do for his Physical Therapy. I really had fun with this this year and I'm really looking forwards to doing the week next year too.

It's not beta read, hope you enjoy!

Work Text:

"You know Hidan..."

"Mhm."

"I must say when you agreed to this I was a little surprised. You don't seem like the type to do this sort of thing."

"You know just because I'm an asshole doesn't mean I'm incapable of taking care of you, old man."

Kakuzu grunted, then wheezed a bit as he has his leg lifted up and gently pushed back before he hissed when some pain runs through him. The younger man raised a brow before he slowly looked around to get a look at the bandaged stiches that were in his boyfriend's hip. He felt the urge to give the wound a poke and see how much it's actually healed, but then the ache o the bruise on his head where the older man had smacked him the last time he did reminds him that it was best not to give in to temptation.

"Come on you gotta do as it says in the book you know," Hidan then slowly had Kakuzu extend the leg, "Honestly Kakuzu couldn't you have just sucked it up and gone to a rehab center for physical therapy?"

A grumble left the old man as he turned his face away, "And pay those hacks money for exercises I could just do here with you? No thank you."

"Yet you trusted them to put a new hip in your body?" Hidan repeated the movement, before Kakuzu could answer, watching the older man wince and hiss in pain. Sometimes he forgets that Kakuzu is in his mid sixties; he had a handsome scarred face and a very toned, muscular body that would put most younger guys to shame. His hair hasn't even begun greying yet!

Kakuzu crossed his arms, "I would have refused if you had not insisted that I get the damned hip replacement."

"You fell in the tub and broke it twice," Hidan shot back, "Stretch your fucking leg out then slowly move back your foot, don't want you to atrophy, then later we gotta try and walk around the house got it?"

"Uugh..." Kakuzu tilted back his head to glare at the ceiling.

He's been extra cranky since he got home from the hip replacement surgery; the fact that they had him trying to do physical therapy just a day after had him in for a loop and he had to bargain with Hidan to get him discharged. It was only by a miracle he convinced his foul mouthed lover to look up the usual exercises so he could get moving again.

Hidan grimaced a little. He wouldn't admit it, not even if Jashin himself commanded it, but he had been terrified when he came home those two times to Kakuzu's injury. The first time he had fallen outside with the four mastiffs, attempting to take them out. He had lost his footing and landed on the porch steps with his hip horribly black and blue and looking wrong. With Kakuzu knocked out Hidan didn't think when he brought him to the hospital.

They had insisted that he get a hip replacement but the old man was stubborn and just asked for the medicine he needed and how long the recover would be while using crutches. Hidan hadn't protested back then because to him, his lover has always been someone who valued his independence above all else. He had gotten better and was back on his feet.

However the second time he broke his hip? Hidan had come home from grocery shopping to the giant balls of fluffy whining and trying to get Kakuzu to wake up as he had passed out. It nearly sent the jashinist into hysterics. The second time it happened, and Kakuzu tried to leave instead of the replacement they had had a very bad argument over it, one Hidan refused to back down from and by some miracle he won it.

"Come on, let's get you to the couch yeah? Bet that'll feel loads better than the recliner," Hidan stands up as he gently placed the leg back down, "C'mon old man..."

"No no I can't have my leg elevated over the hip," Kakuzu hissed at him, "This is fine. You don't have to hover over me I'm not an invalid."

The silver haired young man for once in his life takes a slow breath and even puts his hands together as if he was about to pray, "Not saying you're an invalid, though you came pretty fucking close! Fine I'll go make something."

"Hidan-"

"Sandwiches. I'm fucking making sandwiches, and no I'm not using the toaster. Don't need you trying to get up off the seat and pop the thing loose," Hidan huffed as he goes to the kitchen with the sound of big paws happily clacking behind him in the hopes he might toss them a cold cut from the counter. He pet each of their fluffy heads and goes to get started on making the sandwiches

For once Kakuzu doesn't snap after him, as he gets started. He ignores the tension that has just settled between them since they came home from the hospital. Neither one of them wanted to acknowledge it, a silent agreement that they both just wanted things to get back to normal. Besides it wasn't as if the physical therapy wasn't helping as Kakuzu has been able to manage to move a few steps at a time without help. It wasn't perfect but it was something.

Hidan could only do so much. He wasn't a damned trained professional yet Kakuzu was putting his health in his hands like it was no big deal and sometimes Hidan worries he'll fuck up his hip somehow or make some mistake where they have to take him back and get is fixed all over again and-and-

He is brought out of his thoughts when he hears a shaky breath from the living room. Immediately he moves to peak out and see what was happening and drops the knife he had been using to cut through some tomatoes when he sees Kakuzu with his face buried in his hands. Immediately he rushes out and over, trying not to step on the dogs paws-they made the most heartbreaking and guilt inducing yelps even when they aren't hurt-and he makes his way over.

"Kuzu?! Kuzu! What's wrong? Did something pop?! Ack! Move you mountains of fucking fur, it's not play time!" He huffed as he practically hopped around them to get to their owner, his lover, the man he called his husband and then moves to crouch in front of him and reached up to hold his shoulders, "Kakuzu, what's wrong?"

The brunette with scars and stitch tattoos looked up slowly, gritting his teeth, "..I hate this."

The dogs whine as they soon move and sit around the pair, looking at their owner worriedly with those dark brown eyes of theirs. One of them even rests his paw on his good leg.

"...I hate needing help," Kakuzu said quietly as he glared down at his hands, "..I hate that this damned hip broke twice...I hate that I can't move around or go anywhere without supervision...I hate that I spent so much money on something that I'll probably end up having to get replaced again and again because for some reason i can't move around this place without losing my balance...! I hate...I hate..."

"Hey hey hey, Kakuzu..." Hidan tried to catch his eyes with his, "Kakuzu, come on it's not like this is going to keep you down forever. This is temporary, soon you'll be walking like it's not big deal and ya know we could probably put some adjustments on the house and-"

"I don't want adjustments to the house, I want my body to just not break so easily! Dammit, I never had problems like this before, am...am I really getting that fucking old? Is..is this how life is going to be? You taking care of me because my body has started to decline? I just...it swims in my head every time I think about the fucking replacement! It..." he takes a harsh breath in and goes quiet as he pinched the bridge of his nose.

It's quiet for a moment save for the quiet pacing and heavy panting of the four tibetan mastiffs. For a moment Kakuzu thinks he might have upset Hidan and he slowly looked up at him.

Hidan was red in the face as he looked like he was struggling to breathe before something in him breaks, "PFFFT BAHAHAHA! AHAHAHAHAHAHAH!" he covered his face, his shoulders shaking and grinning, "Is..is that what's been bugging you Kuzu?! Oh man you had me really scared for a second man...! I mean yeah it sucks that you're human like the rest of us, but you know what? I don't really mind all that much considering I knew what I was getting into when we got together. Idiot you think I didn't know what I was signing up for being with a geezer like you? Pfft..."

Kakuzu grimaced, "Hidan..."

"No no listen listen...I wouldn't be with you if i was scared of you falling and breaking your hip a bunch. I mean sure I was scared for you when it happened but you are the most fucking stubborn old man i have ever met. It's why you're going to heal from this in no time and soon things will be back to normal, you'll see."

"Still you're stuck until-"

Hidan kissed him. He kissed him slow and kissed him deep, holding his cheek and running his thumb over one of the scars on his cheek before breaking it.

"Kakuzu, trust me, I am the furthest from being stuck with you. I'm not here out of obligation, I'm here because I want to be with you and get you back on your feet just as bad. Got it?' He gently pushed his hair back from his face before very gently nudged his nose to his, "Now...get those thoughts out of your head before i knock them out with the plate your sandwich is on."

He sat there, stunned and his cheeks darkened in a soft blush at how forwards Hidan was. He needed a minute to process, a moment to just take in what's happened before his words make sense. By then Hidan has already gotten up and gone back to the kitchen like nothing happened and Kakuzu slowly reached up and touched his lips as they were still warm.

Perhaps physical therapy with Hidan was going to pay off after all.
