i hate u | sza
"if you wondered if i hate you (fuck you)"
school was exhausting, and it had only been a few months into your third year at aoba johsai. the reason you were so exhausted had nothing to do with the homework you had. no, the endless assignments, tests, and quizzes were the least of your concerns.
what made school so exhausting, this year especially, was that the one person you couldn't stand was in all of your classes.
every. single. class.
there was no way this was possible. and yet here you were, stuck with the douchebag himself, oikawa tooru.
it wasn't just his pompous attitude, the constant attention he received from the girls in your grade, or even his surprisingly great grades that made you dislike him. it went way deeper. and unfortunately for you, he made it his goal to annoy the hell out of you.
"y/n, is that gum in your backpack?" the brown-haired boy asked loudly from across the table.
the two of you were in science class. outside food, even gum, was strictly prohibited by the teacher, sensei himari.
you glared daggers at the boy whose smug grin only pissed you off you even more.
"y/n, is this true? you know my rules about that sort of thing—" your teacher chided, looking up from her laptop.
you quickly shook your head, zipping your backpack as inconspicuously as you could under the desk. "of course not, sensei! i don't have gum with me. i have no idea what oikawa could be talking about."
she tsk'd and went back to her work as the room flooded with a quiet hush of giggles from the girls and snickers from the boys.
"lucky break," oikawa whispered to you with a pointed look in his eyes.
"oh shut up," you hissed with a frown.
oikawa rolled his eyes at you, sticking out his tongue.
this guy is insufferable!
when the bell rang you quickly gathered your things, eager to get out of the classroom as soon as possible. however, in your rush out the door, you bumped into someone. your phone clattered loudly to the floor.
"oh, y/n. sorry, i didn't see you there," the boy apologized, your name sounding stiff on his tongue.
he knelt down, picked up your phone, and handed it to you.
"iwaizumi." you replied in cold acknowledgement, recognizing the boy in front of you as oikawa's best friend and your ex-best friend.
he winced slightly at hearing you say his last name.
when you met his eyes you could imagine a young iwaizumi again: small, knees covered in bandaids, grinning ear to ear.
but after meeting oikawa, he disappeared from your life.
you gave him a scrutinized look before walking out to the seijoh parking lot. there was no reason for you to hang around the school. football (soccer) pre-season would begin in a few weeks with the regular season starting a couple months after.
plus, your friends had invited you to a party tonight. with tomorrow being the start of the weekend and your dad being out of town, per usual, it was the perfect time to go.

"iwaaaa," oikawa whined, "why can't you just stay after practice with me for an hour or two? you can sleep in tomorrow anyways."
iwaizumi shook his head and scoffed. "you work too damn hard. plus, tonight's the party and i'd rather be there than staying after practice and working my ass off."
oikawa frowned, falling slightly behind the pace of his friend as the two of them made their way to seijoh's gymnasium.
"you should come," iwaizumi continued.
"to the party? i don't think so, the interhigh tournament is in a couple of weeks, and i need to lock in."
"you've been working hard enough. the whole team has! just take a break tonight and then no more parties until after the tournament. one night won't hurt."
oikawa sighed, considering his friend's offer. it was tempting: loud music, drinks, a good time. but the interhigh tournament—karasuno—
"fine," he replied after a couple moments of contemplative silence, i'll go. but just tonight and then no more parties."
"deal," iwaizumi agreed, giving oikawa a rough pat on the back.

honk honk!
that must be my friends, you thought to yourself with a smile.
quickly applying some lipgloss, stuffing your phone and wallet in a small purse, and tying up your shoes, you ran out the door to meet your friends in the car.
"damn girl, you look good!" your best friend aishi yelled from the driver's seat out the open passenger window. "get shotgun, the other girls are in the back."
you got in the car and greeted all your friends. everyone was wearing their usual party outfits with their hair and makeup done to perfection.
"i'm so ready for this night," you said aloud as aishi began her reckless drive to the party.
"same girl," your friend kimmi replied, "mattie throws the best ones: seijoh's finest man!"
"other than oikawa, obviously," your other friend sam added with a giggle.
"oh please," you scoffed, "that guy isn't shit."
"we know you hate him," aishi replied, "but that doesn't mean we can't appreciate a good looking guy. even you have to admit, he's hot as hell."
"whatever."
your mind wandered to class today. how bothersome oikawa was. how you had seen iwaizumi after class. as far as you were concerned, oikawa was a nothing but a dick and iwaizumi was no different.
you leaned over to turn the music up, and the four of you screamed the lyrics to pitbull for the rest of the drive.
finally, aishi pulled up to the house. it rested in the middle of a very spacious yard with houses several meters away on either side.
low bass could be heard from outside the home, and through the window blinds you all could vaguely see strobe lights and dancing silhouettes.
the four of you walked up to the door, adjusting your outfits, hair, and lipgloss as you did so. aishi opened the door and the sound was almost deafening. you all grinned, suddenly hit with a blast of dopamine from the energy in the house.
the host was waiting at the door ready to greet his guests.
"you made it!" he grinned. "welcome in kimmi and friends to the humble home of your own issei matsukawa!"
seijoh's best blocker stepped aside and let you all in, offering his arm to kimmi.
she had been invited by matsukawa to the party a few days ago and convinced you all to join her.
he whisked her through the crowd to the kitchen and dining area as you all followed. the long table was filled to the brim with snacks, a chocolate fountain, and bottles of soda and alcohol.
"if any of you want a mixed drink, i'll be somewhere in the game room upstairs. i'll open up the pool at midnight!" with that matsukawa took kimmi with him, leaving you all in the middle of a crowded house.
the music blasted from the various speakers along the walls and people filled almost every inch of the place. it was hard to distinguish between the dancers and the people hooking up in the middle of all the chaos.
"i want to go find the volleyball team," sam said, popping some chips from the table in her mouth.
"i'll go with you," aishi replied. "wanna come with us?"
you thought for a second and shook your head.
"maybe later, i'm going to make myself a drink and go dance."
the two left you at the table in search of the volleyball team. you poured some vodka in a red solo cup and took a swig. the buzz it left almost immediately put you at ease. you poured another splash of vodka into your cup and made you way to the dance circle.
you made eye contact with some other girls from your classes and went to join them.
"y/n! so you did decide to come!"
you laughed. "yeah, i couldn't miss this."
you all made small talk and danced to the loud music. the vodka was like fuel to fire and soon you'd abandoned the small talk to just dancing.
latin music was now blasting and the other girls you were with joined you.
your head spun and you felt high on glee and alcohol.
as you danced and jumped around with your classmates, you bumped into a tall figure and lost your balance.
"hey, watch it!" you frowned, facing the person who had invaded your space.
is that oikawa tooru? i thought everyone says he always spends his evenings training in the gymnasium? why is he at this party?
he met your fiery eyes. "maybe you should watch where you're dancing."
you stuck your tongue out at him, dizzily taking another drink from your cup only to find it empty.
i'm so thirsty.
you decided to ignore oikawa for now and made your way to the table with all the drinks. someone tapped on your shoulder as your refilled your cup. you whipped around, relieved to see aishi.
"hey girl!" you said with a smile, leaning in to give her a huge hug.
"geez, y/n, you look like you've had a good time!"
she brushed some stray hairs out of your face and poured herself a drink.
"where are the other girls?" you asked.
"with matsukawa and the other volleyball guys dancing. but i'm glad i found you, i had a question."
"yeah, what's up?"
"want to come with us to the volleyball tournament next weekend?"
this wasn't the first time during your high school career that your friends had made this offer. and your answer had stayed the same each and every time.
"not really, no," you replied.
"but you should, it would be so fun!"
"did kimmi set you up for this? i know she's like obsessed with matsukawa, but i'm really not a fan of volleyball."
"why not? it's one of the best sports." an all too familiar voice interrupted.
you turned to glare at the source of the voice, making eye contact with oikawa. next to him was iwaizumi who wore an embarrassed expression.
not this guy again.
"volleyball is not one of the best sports." you argued.
"tell that to my undying fans."
"i don't see them anywhere!"
"you will if you just come to our game."
"i won't."
"fine," he said with a frown.
"fine!"
you angrily pushed past the two boys, aishi just a few steps behind.
"sorry about her," you heard her whisper behind you.
i'm not sorry for shit.
heat rushed to your face as you went back to the dance floor. you saw kimmi and sam jumping up and down with the other members of the volleyball team.
"i can't stand being around them," you complained with a frown.
"i know, girl," aishi sympathized, "but it is their party. c'mon, we can make the most of it!"
you sighed and let aishi drag you to the floor, taking another drink from your cup to prepare yourself.
"y/n, there you are! come dance with us!" sam called out to you with a buzzed smile.
"mattie was just saying how there's a tournament next weekend that we should go to!" kimmi told you.
"yeah, you ladies should for sure come out and support," matsukawa added, his arm slung around kimmi's shoulders.
you shrugged. "maybe, but football's starting up soon and i'm hoping to get some weekend training in."
"c'mon, y/n, just come with us! please?" kimmi asked, batting her eyelashes.
"i'll think about it!"
"what can we do to convince you?" matsukawa proposed.
you took a swig of your vodka and opened your mouth to respond, but someone from behind cut you off.
"she's not coming. thinks she's too good for our sport."
by now you were hot. this was like the third time oikawa had felt the need to butt in. all you had wanted was a nice night out with your friends, but this killjoy felt the need to ruin every moment.
you huffed, turning to face the volleyball captain. his brown eyes sparkled with playfullness, but the vodka running through your system didn't care.
"that's not true!" you protested, "i just have better things to do with my time!"
"you don't have to come, y/n, we get it," iwaizumi butt in.
"no, iwa, let her finish," oikawa asserted. "she clearly has a lot to say."
"i don't need your sass, oikawa tooru. and i definitely don't need to see you play."
"well that's good, because we don't need your support to win," oikawa took a step towards you, now looking down at you with a frown.
you took a step closer, refusing to back down. "oh please. i'm surprised that you're even here instead of working your ass off in the gym."
"well at least i'm not drowning myself in vodka to have fun."
"i don't need vodka to have fun!"
by this point the two of you were so close you could smell his strong cologne, making you feel slightly dizzy. the strobe lights illuminated his hair, which was sticking up every which way. sweat glistened off of his exposed arms. and his eyes, piercing, stared straight through you.
you felt exposed, the air tense enough to be cut by a knife.
"oikawa, y/n, chill out." iwaizumi barked with gritted teeth, finally breaking the tension and pushing the two of you apart. he looked at you both disappointedly, making you feel even more flushed and overwhelmed.
all your friends looked at each other awkwardly before moving to your side. you saw iwaizumi not so subtly elbow oikawa in the side. he glared at his friend, bent over slightly and holding his side. oikawa cleared his throat and straightened up, about to say something until he was interrupted by the music stopping.
matsukawa had somehow made it to the top of the stairs and was talking loudly about the tournament next weekend. this being the start to a fun year. the pool opening. blah blah blah.
everyone around you was listening intently, but you couldn't take your eyes off of oikawa. seemingly sensing you, he turned to look your way.
kimmi pulled at your arm, desperately trying to prevent another showdown between you and oikawa. "y/n, let's go! mattie promised that he would make us mixed drinks!"
you let her take you away, feeling quite pleased with yourself when you heard iwaizumi and oikawa arguing behind you.
"so ladies, how's the party? enjoying yourselves?" matsukawa asked as he began making his signature party concoction for you all to have a cup of.
"yeah, it's been great!" you said with a quick smile before your friends could say otherwise.
"perfect. i hope you all come to our tournament next weekend." he replied, pouring his mix into four cups.
you all took one, wincing slightly as the strong mix of alcohol hit your throats. matsukawa laughed at the faces you guys made.
"it's a pretty strong drink, i know. careful not to have too much of it. i'm going to go ahead and open up the pool, hope to see you ladies out there!"
matsukawa left you all by the drinks and opened up the large doors to his backyard. the crowd in the house flooded out, desperate for some fresh air. iwaizumi walked out with everyone else, dragging oikawa behind him. the two of you made eye contact, eliciting a hot feeling in your core that made you extremely uncomfortable.
i can't stand that guy, you thought to yourself, finishing off the strong drink and pouring yourself another full cup.
"y/n, mattie said not to drink too much," kimmi chided.
you didn't reply. you couldn't stop thinking about your argument with oikawa. how easily you both had gotten under each other's skin. it was frustrating how easily he could piss you off. you wanted nothing more than to witness that smug grin melt off of his face.
you then thought of the tournament next weekend. there was always the possibility of a loss—
"you know," you mumbled quietly, "maybe we should go to the tournament next weekend."
"ah, yay!" kimmi cheered.
"i'm down!" sam agreed eagerly.
aishi looked at you for confirmation.
you nodded, giving in.
you wanted to see exactly why oikawa loved volleyball so much. but even moreso, you wanted to see him lose.
⋇⊶⊰❣⊱⊷⋇
the party was fun, but you were glad to finally be home after aishi dropped you off. you settled in to a nice weekend at home, managing to recover pretty well from the alcohol you had drowned at matsukawa's.
during school that monday you did your best to avoid oikawa. but there was only so much you could do considering how many classes of yours he was in. however, you managed. it helped that he seemed to be avoiding you as well.
although, there was the odd occasion where the two of you would make eye contact. the hot feeling in your core that you felt at the party came back every time this happened. it was an odd feeling, and you were not the biggest fan of it.
probably just my ever growing dislike for this guy—
unfortunately, your science teacher had not forgotten the gum incident. and oikawa's involvement in the little conversation had not gotten unnoticed by your sensei.
"class, instead of having an end of quarter assessment, i will be assigning group projects as your major grade."
the amount of horror that filled you was immeasurable. knowing your teacher, there was no way you were going to be in a good group.
"now, don't worry. i can see the panic in your eyes. i won't be assigning big groups, just partners! the paper in front of you has the different project choices, so after i assign the partners please choose one and let me know by the end of class."
she started reading the names off as you anxiously began listening for your name to be called. your heart dropped to the pit of your stomach when it finally was.
"and finally, oikawa and y/n! now keep in mind, i am not blocking off classtime to work on this. so make sure you and your partner are diligent in working outside of class! let me know if you have any questions!"
and with that, your fate was sealed.
