What could have been

You are 32 years old, you and Bruno have been together for a few years now.
After a fight with Pepa, Bruno finally asked THE Question.
Alma however isn't so happy.

Chapter Text

The whole Family is in the living room, Bruno is in the Kitchen helping Julieta making dinner.

Mirabel is reading a book, Camilo is making Luisa laugh with some jokes, Pepa is talking to Abuela Alma, Isabela is on the couch doodling in a sketchbook while Antonio is on the floor on a rug playing with his toys and some Smaller animals.

I arrive home, finally.

"Hola Familia"

Everyone stops what they were doing and looks and you, they are surprised to see you. Mirabel looks up from her book and smiles.

"Mh?" I squeak in confusion.

Isabela looks at you and she raises an eyebrow.

Camilo raises his hand to ask you something , but before he can ask Bruno speaks first.

He clears his throat "So.....where have you been?"

"Oh! I was getting a few things at the Market, i guess i forgot the Time" i giggle not knowing that i was gone for 4 Hours.

Everbody stares at you in disbelief.

Bruno's eyebrows are raised and Mirabel looks worried and Pepa...is trying really not to make a Hurricane, She. Is. Mad.

"Is there a problem" I ask carefully.

Pepa suddenly gets loud "A Problem?!, You left for 4 hours and didn't even told anyone?!"

"No I told Augustin!"

She scoffs "Oh now you are going to blame Augustin?"

"No... I told Augustin to tell you! I would never lie about that!"

She crosses her Arms "then where is he? Why isn't he here to explain this to me huh?"

"I don't know where he is, Julieta where IS your Husband?" I look at her.

Julieta shrugs but with a worried face."He said he was going out for a bit and then getting some more wood so.."

"That's wierd I thought he was Home" I said.

Pepa scoffs again "So your telling me that both of you left the House without telling anyone and now neither of you know where the other is?"

"Well I know where I AM, I told Augustin to tell you" I cross my arms "I bet he fell asleep like last time I went out with Bruno for 2 hours and came home to you yelling at Augustin for not telling you" I told Pepa with a hint of annoyance.

Pepa's face gets as red as her Hair " That was different!! He was supposed to be watching the kids and he just...left"

"He left? Didn't Antonio said he was sleeping on the Couch?"

The little boy nods "yeah I saw him on the couch when I went to the Kitchen to get a snack"

"See." I turn to Pepa and wave my at in Antonio's direction.

Pepa is speechless, she doesn't know what to say. Bruno walk into the room and looks at everyone.

He notices the Tension.

"Hola mi Amor" I look at Bruno

He smiles at you "Hola mi vida " He walks over and wraps his arms around you,Pepa rolls her eyes.

I ignore her "what's for dinner?"

He kisses your cheek " I'm making your Favourite"

My face lights up " Empanadas?!"

He nods "ofcourse. You know I can't say no to you when it comes to food"

"Oh Bruno how I love you" I giggle

He smiles and pulls you closer " I love you too" He kisses your Forehead and you can see Pepa glaring at you both with Camily gaging in the background.

"Well I should wash up before dinner" I let Bruno go and start to wake towards the bathroom.

Pepa speaks up "You're not going anywhere until we have a little chat"

"We can have a chat after dinner,

my dear Sister-in-law"

Pepa glares at you, She's obviously not happy about that. Bruno speaks up "I think you should listen to her, and please calmate " He indicates to the big black cloud around Pepas head.

"Ugh" I start to walk to our room

Pepa follow you. Bruno looks worried and follows behind. You van hear the rest of the Family whispering about what just happened.

I enter our Room.

Pepa closes the door behind her. Bruno is still standing near the doorway looking concerned. Pepas voice is still loud and angry and her cloud ist still big.

"What is it now Hermana?" I ask

She crosses her Arms "I want to know where you were for 4 Hours. And don't lie to me"

"What you think I would cheat on my beloved Brunito?"

She stares you down for a moment before speaking "No....but I don't believe that you were just Shopping"

"Well if you don't believe me, check my bag if you will!" I point at my Bagy which are still closed and on the table.

Pepa walks over to the bags and starts opening then. Bruno is still standing near the door, he's Worried that this is going to turn into a fight.

I watch Pepa opening my stuff.

She takes everything out and checks each item.

She is not finding anything that would make her think you were lying, she is getting mote frustrated as she continues to search.

"Well?" I ask amused

Pepa Is silent foe a moment, She's not sure what to say. She looks at you with a look of disappointment.

Bruno is still at the door looking at the both of you.

"Do you really think I would cheat on Bruno? I love him and He's the only Man I want to be with!"

She looks away from you, she knows she's being unreasonable. She sighs "I'm sorry, I don't know what got into me, I just......I was worried"

"Well...its late, I'm gonna go to bed early" I walk past her and towards the Bed-area.

Pepa follows you but Bruno steps infant of her and blocks her way. He speaks quietly so only you can. Hear him.

"Bruno?"

He whispers "I'm sorry for what she said, She's just being overprotective, She's just worried about me.

I climb into bed as Pepa leaves the room, I snuggle into the Blanket.

"Mhh"

He gets in bed with you and wraps his arms around you.

I cuddle up to him

He holds you close and kisses your Forehead,He whispers "I love you"

"Te amo Mi vida"

He smiles and pulls you even closer. He kisses your cheek and his eyes start to get heavy, he's starting to fall asleep.

I fall asleep before Bruno.

The next morning you wake up to find Bruno still asleep. He's wrapped around you, his face buried in your neck. You can hear the rest of the Family talking in the other room.

I smile, Bruno is sleeping like a baby.

You hear a knock on the door, its Mirabel, She's holding a tray of food and she's looking a little worried.

I yawn and look at Mirabel "mhmm yes?"

She whispers "can I talk to you for a moment?"

"Sure thing sweetpea, come in" I sit up slightly and pull the covers up to my waist.

She walks in and closes the door behind her. She looks at you nervously.

"What is it?" I say, trying to sound calm

The young girl takes a deep breath "I'm worried about you, I heard what happend with Tia Pepa last night"

"..Oh.. I see"

She sits on the edge of the bed as to not disturb the still sleeping Bruno. "I know you two don't always get along, but she's just looking out for him"

"So she thinks I'm cheating on him huh? ....I wasn't..I would never..."

She shakes her head "I know Tia, I believe you.

But she's just worried about him. She's afraid that he'll get hurt again"

"Again??..What do you mean 'again'?"

She hesitates for a moment "I don't think I should be the one to tell you this"

"Mirabel." I speak in a stern voice

She looks away, she know she can't keep this from you as you are Tios Girlfriend.

She takes a deep breath.

"Tell me" I say, trying not to sound angry

She looks back at you, her eyes are filled with sadness "it's was a long time ago...but Tio Bruno had a girlfriend before he met you, before he even went into the walls.."

"And..?"

She shallows hard "She was...not a good person, she was...was abusive"

I stay silent for a few moments "He never told me.."

She shakes her head "He didn't want to talk about it, he is too ashamed, but.. he still has some scars from her and her disgusting nails, like claws"

I look away, im starting to feel guilty for yelling at Prpa last night.

"Its not your fault.She shouldnt have accused you of something like that"

"No shes just looking out for her Brother, i can understand"

I look at Brunos sleeping form, he's still asleep, he looks so peacefull. You cant help but smile at him. Mirabel notice this

"Mira can you make sure your Papá is alright..you know how he is"

She nods "ofcourse, ill go check on him"

"Thank you"

She smiles and leaves the room, your alone with Bruno now.

I gently kiss his Forehead, he starts to stir, his eyes are starting to open. He smiles when he sees you.

"Buenos dias amor " i smile

He pulls you close and kisses you "Buenos Dias, how did you sleep?"

"Good..i feel like im going to be in triuble though"

Ge raises an eyebrow "why? What did you do?"

"Pepa thinks i cheated on you"

His eyes widen "she said what?!"

He sits up and pulls you into his arms "She has no right to say that. I know you wouldn't do anything like that"

I start to tear up "uhhhu"

He wipes away your Tears "Hey don't cry its okay, I believe you, that's all that matters"

"God I don't know what's going on with me, I get so emotional recently " I wipe at my eyes

He pulls you close and kisses your Head "You're just going through a lot right now. You've been stressed and it's taking a toll on you"

We hear a knock on the door. He looks over at the door "who is it?"

Dolores voice calls from the other side "it's me can I come in?"

"Come in Sobrina"

Dolores walks in, she is holding a Flower bouquet

Bruno smiles at her "What are those for?"

She smiles "for you! I'm sorry how things have gotten with Mama yesterday " she hands me the flowers and smiles softly

I smell them "they're beautiful Lores, thank you and don't think too hard on yesterday I'm sure thinks work out"

"Also Tio.." she says and takes something out of her pocket "we were just looking in the attic and found something I heard you would want" She snickerd.

She pulls out a small box

"What's that?" I ask a little curious

He opens the box and his eyes widen. He looks at Dolores, his expression is one of surprise

I look over at Bruno, my curiosity growing

Inside the box was a matching ring set of White-gold with deep blue sapphire gem stones, it was the Wedding rings of Pedro's Parents, a real Madrigal Heirloom.

Bruno had thought about proposing to you a few times but never found a ring good enough for you in his sight.

He looked at Dolores and smiled.

Now it's the Perfect time.

Dolores leaves to give us some privacy

I look at Bruno with big eyes.

"Bruno, something wrong?"

He shakes his head "No..I just..I.. have a question for you "

"Yes?" I tilt my head, he loves when I do that

He smiles and takes a deep breath

"Do you remember the day we met?"

"How could I forget? It was the most magical day of my life"

He blushes and looks away "I'm glad you think so. But.. do you remember what I said to you that day ?"

I giggled "you asked me if I was an Angel because there would be now way I could be a Normal Human and THIS Beautiful"

He smiles "That's right. And I meant every Word but I also said something else.."

"You told me you were in love with me" I blush

He nods" and I still am, I love you more than anything in the world but there is something als I still have to say"

"Yes?" My heart starts to beat faster

He takes a deep breath, gets out of bed and kneels down on one knee, still in his pyjama, with a lovestruck expression on his face and the box in his hand

I gasp and cover my Mouth

"I know we've only been together for a few years, but I know you're the one for me and u want you to know that I would do anything for you, so I'm asking you...

My eyes are filling with tears

He takes a deep breath and continues

"Will you marry me? With bad Visions and Rats?"

I laugh and jump into his arms, he catches me and we both fall on to the floor laughing

"Yes! Yes I'll marry you! "

He pulls you close and kisses you, Dolores who is standing outside the door ofcourse heard everything and is smiling, happy for her Tio.

The thud from us both falling was so heavy that it alerted the Family, who then came to the Tower to see if everything is alright, Dolores let them in

"Is everything alright in there" we can hear Julieta asking from the now open door.

I yell " come see for yourself"

God I can't stop smiling, I'm so happy.

Bruno is still holding me close

Everyone, well almost everyone come into the room and is gatherd around us. They all look so surprised and some of the are even crying.

Pepa is the only one who doesn't look happy

Julieta runs over and hugs us both "I'm so Happy for you two!"

Pepa stays silent and just stares at us. Her Faces is unreadable. Bruno looks over at her, he seems worried.

"T-that was...everything was so unexpected..i-i-i dias mio I'm so Happy" my face hurts a bit from smiling so much

Pepa finally speaks "This is all happening too fast. You two have only been together for a few years, how do you know this is what you want?"

"Pepa,Bruno proposed to me. THATS how we know, you don't have to be part of OUR Wedding if you don't want to ... its not like I WANT a Hurricane at my Wedding"

Pepa is taken back by your response. She looks away and doesn't say anything. Bruno is still holding you close and he looks worried....again

I look at Bruno "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that"

"So when's the Wedding?" Isabela asks excitingly

Bruno speaks first " I think we should wait a few months, you know Planning, clothes, Food, etc"

I nod "yeah I think so aanndd now that you mentioned clothes.." I look at Mirabel "I would like Mirabel to make my Wedding dress "I smile

Mirabel smiles back "Ofcourse! I'd be happy to "

Pepa is still silent, but she's listening to the conversation

"I really want to wear my mother's old one, it just needs some touch up"

Mirabel nods "I can take care of that. It'll be ready by the time the Wedding comes around"

"Thank you Mirabel!" I hug her, she hugs you back. " your welcome , I'm so happy for you "

"So...how will we tell Alma that were getting Married?" I ask, a little worried

Bruno takes a deep breath " I'll talk to her, ill make sure she's okay with this"

"No, I don't want you to have to deal with her.I'll do it"

"Are you sure? She going to be angry..."

"Well I don't care if she likes it or not, I AM going to be her Daughter-in-law!"

He smiles and pulls you close " I love how you have confidence enough for both of us, but u still want to be the one to talk to her"

"I know but this is my fight too. I'm going to be your Wife, I need to be able to stand up for myself, ill be fine, I can handle anything"

I kiss his cheek

"I'm going to find her now"

He nods " just be careful. And remember ill always be here for you"

"I know" I walk out of the room, which in now empty except for isabela, Dolores, Bruno and Julieta. I go and try to find Abuela Alma only to find her in the Kitchen sitting at the Dinner table drinking some tea, she looks up when you enter.

"Hola Alma" I smile at her

She looks at you for a moment, her expression is unreadable, she never wanted you and Bruno to be together. She puts her pen down and leans back in her chair.

"May I have a word with you?" I ask politely

She nods and gestures for you to sit down and pour you a cup of tea but with a different sugar.

"Its a new one, The Suagar i mean,..so What is it that you want to talk about dear?"

"Its about Bruno.." I take a deep breath

She raises an eyebrow "What about my son?"

"Well..he and i...are..going to get Married" i talk slowly do to being so nervous

Her eyes widen "your ..what?"

My heart starts to pound in my chest

"I know it's a bit sudden but we've been together for a few years now and we're in Love.

We want to be together forever."

She stares at you for a few seconds

You can't tell what she's thinking

Finally, she speaks " How long have you two been together?"

This is not how I thought this was going to go

"I-its been about 3 years now.."

Her expression softens a little bit

"I see. And how old are you?"

"32"

She's quite for a moment. Then she nods

"And you're sure you want to marry him, he is 20 years older then you.."

"Yes..I love him more than anything"

She looks at you for a long time, she seems to be thinking about something. Finally she speaks,

"I have one condition"

Your taken back by this, you were expecting her to be upset, but not to have a condition, "what is it?"

She stands up and walks over to the window, looking out at the Village. she takes a deep breath and turns back to you " you have to promise me something"

"And that is?"

She pauses for a moment, then she says

"You can't have children"

My.Jaw.DROPS "w-why?!"

She takes a breath " I can't allow the Madrigal bloodline to be diluted. It's too important"

"D-diluted?! But you agreed to your Daughters when they married, why not your son?"

She looks at you, her eyes are cold

"My daughters married men who were of equal status. Bruno wants to marry YOU, a nothing in the Encanto, I can not allow that to happen!"

I look shocked...betrayed

She sees your expression and she sighs

"I know this Is a lot to take in. But it's for the best, your a good person and I know you would be a good wife to my Brunito, but I can't let you have children who will be as hated as there Fahter by the Town"

My eyes fill with tears "So I have to choose between having a Family with the Man I love or being with him at all?"

She looks away " I'm sorry, it's the only way, I won't allow my Family's legacy to be ruined, for A child's life to be ruined"

I feel dizzy and sick, I don't think I can stand much longer

She sees your reaction and she seems a little worried "Listen, I know this is hard but I'm only looking out for the Family"

"I-i-i.." I am Speechless, the sick feeling is getting worse, Iam getting paler by the minute

She notices how pale your getting and how fast

"Are you okay? You don't look well.."

I start to feel as if the room is spinning

"I feel like im gonna be sick..."

I lay my head on the desk, I am shaking, The world is just spinning and spinning around me.

Alma come with a glass of water and sits next to you

"Here drink this, I know this is a lot to take in but you'll be fine just take a few minutes to collect yourself"

I hear People getting downstairs, but I can't recognise any Of the Voices, I stand up but and up stumbling against a Wall, I try to hold myself up on it.

The Voices get louder as they get closer, You hear Bruno's voice among them, he sounds worried

My Vision starts to blur and my ears ring

You can hear someone calling your name. Bruno.

He sounds panicked, he rushes over and grabs your arms, at the same moment my legs give out and I fall to the ground.

He catches you and pulls you close.

His face is full of worry

"Are you okay?! What happened?!"

The later was probably towards Alma. I try to speak but I can't. I just stare at him, my eyes full of tears.

He wipes away the tears from your face, he's crying himself

In my vision there are now black spots, I start to lose consciousness

He notices this and is now officially Panicking, he holds you close and shakes you gently

"Hey!Hey! Stay with me, please just stay awake!"

Julieta and Augustin are bringing Abuela Alma to her room and Felix is making sure the young ones are all in Isabelas room for the time being, especially Antonio.

My eyes flutter shut and I fell limp in his arms

He's terrified. He looks around for help but with only Pepa there Frozen with shock, he picks you up gently and carries you to the bedroom. He lays you down and sits next to you, holding your Hand and hoping that Julieta would come quickly.

In the next minute the elder Triplet come into the room and starts to check you over, Bruno still next to me on the bed looking incredibly nervous, Augustin now joined Felix and started to calm The Children down as best as they can

Julieta checks your pulse and listens to your breathing. She looks very concerned. She looks at Bruno "How long has she been like this?"

"Like what?"

"The dizziness, a bit difficult breathing, being sick, THAT"

"a..a few weeks but it has been nothing so serious"

She is shocked "a few weeks? How did I not notice this...and my food didn't help?

"No not really..she told me its probablyjust a stomachbug or tge flu, she has been a bit feverish and has...started to throw up every other Morning"

"She has also been really tired and has been losing weight, I thought it was just stress but.."

Julieta's face turns pale "How much weight?"

Around...10 pounds over the past few weeks"

She takes a deep breath" I think I know what's going on"

Julieta takes another deep breath " I need you to listen to me very carefully. It's very likely....that..she's pregnant.."

He's speechless, he just stares at her in shock

"No..there. is no way..she ..she would have told me"

She shakes her head "she may not have even realised it herself. But I'm almost certain that what it is."

"So she pregnant..with MY Child?"

She nods "Yes, im sorry to break it to you like this, but there is no denying it"

He turns to look at me

Julieta puts a hand on his shoulder " I know this is a lot to take in. But you need to think about what you want to do. Do you want to be a Father?"

"I love her more than anything.but I don't know if I'm ready to be a father..."

"At your age its not common to have children I'm mean were almost 52..Have you two ever talked about it?"

He sighs " No, we've always said we'd wait until we're ready but.. I think i might be ready now"

She smiles a bit "you really think so?"

He nods "I do, I love her and if we're going to have a Family together, I want to be a good father"

She smiles "then I think you should tell her, she is going to be so happy"

"..I'm going to be a Father.."

He looks down at me, I am still unconscious in his arms.

"Your gonna be a father, and a great one at that"

Afterwards Julieta takes her leave

He sits there, holding you in his arms,he is still in shock, he whispers to himself "I'm gonna to be a Father "

He holds you tightly "I don't know what to do now, I don't want to hurt you but I also don't want to hurt ...our child..our child"

He keeps holding you, still in disbelief. He doesn't know how to handle this situation. He wants to be a good father, but he's also worried about how it will affect you. He wants to protect you both

After a while the Sun sets, the Family gets ready to sleep and Bruno is already at my side in Bed still holding me

He's still awake, thinking about everything that has happened. He looks at you and can't help but smile.

He's going to be a Father, and he's going to do everything he can to be the best one he can be.

He holds you close and whispers "I love you"

The first few Sunshine peak throught the curtain and hit him in the face, he wakes up

He opens his eyes and sits up, he looks at you. You're still sleeping peacefully in his arms. He smiles and kisses his Forehead.

He notices that my Body Temperature is noticeably higher then usually and I have not woken up yet.

He feels your forehead and he's concerned. Your temperature is definitely higher than it should be. He checks your pulse and its also faster than normal.He starting to get anxious.

Then he sees that there is a little puddle of blood in my pants and the covers, he checks my lower parts and sure enough..

I am having a miscarriage.

He grabs a towel and tries to stop the bleeding, he's shaking, not sure what to do, he calls for Julieta, but she doesn't answer.

He starts to panic evern more, he picks you up and rushes to the Kitchen to find His Sister.

Julieta is making Breakfast for everyone. She looks up when she hears him rushing in. Her face turns white when she sees you

"WHAT DO I DO?!" He is still holding me with tears streaming down his face

She looks at you sees the blood and fears for what is happening, she grabs some towels and rushes over to you, she puts them under you to try and stop the bleeding, she looks at you with concern.

"I can't lose her!" He's crying and holding you tightly

"Bruno calm down, were going to do everything we can to help her but you need to stay strong.

I know this is hard but you can't let your emotions get the best of you now!"

"please..I can't lose her"
Julieta takes a deep breath "I know, but you have too keep it together. I need you to let me help her okay?"

He steps away so Julieta can do anything she can
She quickly checks your Pulse and breathing, She's trying to stay calm, She's starting to panic too.
She looks at you and knows she has to act fast.

"What is happening?!" Yells Felix who just walk into the kitchen, (where I am lying on a Corner-couch.)
He looks at me and then at Bruno, he has never seen him so panicked and crying before.

Julieta tries to explain what is happening
"She's loosing the baby, we have to get her staple as soon as possible!"

Felix looks at Bruno, who is completely stunned and devastated, he runs over to him
"Bruno I'm so sorry.."
He doesn't say anything, he just stares at you in shock, he doesn't want to believe that this is really happening

Everbody does what they can, Pepa and Alma keep the children upstairs but they also not really know what going on, in the end Julieta is covered in my blood, the baby...is lost.
Bruno who is devastated and crying in Felix arms.

Julieta looks at you, exhausted from trying to save you too, she is trying to stay strong but she's also struggling to hold back her tears. She looks at her Brother and she sees how much this is affecting him.
She walks over to him and puts her hand on his shoulder.

"I lost her....I.lost our child"
Julieta hugs him tightly "I'm so sorry Hermano"

He is silent, his whole world has just been shattered
She keeps holding him, She's not sure what to say.She just wants to comfort him and make him feel better.
But she knows there's nothing she can do to take away the pain he's feeling.

After a while you're were brought to our room and put in bed.
Julieta sits beside you and she's still trying to process what she just did and why.
She looks at you she's worried, she wants to talk to you, but she again doesn't know what to say, she can only sit there hoping you'll wake up soon.

...

A few hours later, the sun is starting to set, I wake up, stirring do to the pain, I try to sit but didn't, my vision is quite blurry and I feel an odd emptiness inside of me.

Julieta hears you moving and she comes over to the bed.
She's surprised to see that you're awake and sits down next to you, she looks at you with concern and takes your hand
"Can you hear me?"

I try to speak but my voice is hoarse so I just nod weakly.
She smiles a little "That's good, I was so worried about you. How are you feeling?"

I look away, I can't even look at her.
She notices that you're avoiding eye contact and she's worried. She gently turns your Face towards her "Please look at me.."

I stare at her with tears in my eyes.
She wipes away the tears from your eyes "I know this is hard, but you need to try and stay strong. I know you're in a lot of pain right now but you have to be brave."
"Bru-no?.."
She looks away and her voice breaks "I'm so sorry.."

"W-where is he?"
She hesitates for a moment, she doesn't know if she should tell you or not. She takes a deep breath and she looks at you again.
She looks down at the floor, she doesn't know how to say this
"He..he's downstairs.."
My eyes fill with tears "is..he okay?"
Her eyes are now also filling with tears "No..he's not"

"I need to see him!" I try to sit up, it hurts.
She puts her hands on your shoulders and stops you from getting up "You're not ready to get up yet, you need rest!"
"Rest from what? .. what happened Julieta?"
She sighs and breath in "We did everything we could to save the baby..but we couldn't"

"B-baby...what baby..?"
She looks at you, she has to tell you the truth
"You were..with child"
My heart immediately sinks..
"I was..pregnant..?"
She nods, her eyes are overflowing with tears
"I'm so so sorry, lo siento mucho"
"I..I was carrying his child.." she nods again " I know this is a lot to take in, but you have to be strong. Bruno is devastated, he doesn't know what to do with himself.."
"T-the Baby..is..gone?"
She nods, she can't bring herself to say it out loud
"I w-want to see him, please let me see him"

She hesitates for a moment, then she nods "I'll go get him, but please, take it easy with your body"
I lay back in bed and wait for him to come.
She goes downstairs and she walks over to Bruno who is sitting in the Kitchen. He looks like he hasn't slept in day, which was true. She puts a hand on his shoulder and whispers
"Bruno, Hermano can i talk to you for a second?"

"Not now juli...I can't deal with anyone als right now"
"This is important I need you to come with me.."
She look at him, her expression is serious
