Work Text:
“Here we are,” Echo says.
Rex’s jaw drops. “The Batch live here?”
Echo chuckles. “I’ll admit, the flower boxes surprised me too when I first saw them.”
“Well, it’s all of it,” Rex admits. “It’s so…domestic.”
“What did you expect? A field tent on the beach?”
Rex rolls his eyes. “Of course not.”
Maybe.
The door opens and Omega bursts out. “Echo! You’re home!”
“Hey, kiddo,” Echo says, wrapping her in a one armed embrace when she crashes into him. “And look who decided to tag along this time.”
Omega’s eyes find Rex, and she smiles at him with all the warmth of a sun. “Rex!” and she flies to him next, arms wrapping around his middle. “What do you think of Pabu?”
“It’s beautiful,” Rex tells her, carding his fingers through her blond curls. “You’ll have to show me around.”
Omega steps back, bouncing on her toes. “Really? Are you staying longer than just tonight?”
“How does three nights sound?” Echo asks her and laughs when the question earns a squee of approval from their little sister.
They follow Omega inside, put their bags down in the main room, then go out to the back veranda overlooking the sea. The sun is starting to set, early dusk painting the sky.
“The others should be home soon. They were helping down at the docks today,” Omega says.
“Who’s making dinner tonight?” Echo asks, sitting down at the table.
Omega grins, a mischievous glint in her eye. “Don’t worry, it’s not Hunter.”
“Thank the force,” Echo sighs.
“Is he really that bad?” Rex asks.
Echo nods.
Omega makes a face but says, graciously, “He’s…learning.”
They hear the Batch returning before they see them. While Rex can’t make out distinct words, the carefree contentment in their voices is tangible. He glances at Echo, catching his brother’s eye. Echo smiles, and Rex suddenly understands why he had him come: so he can see for himself that what they are still fighting for can end like this.
