Work Text:
Your phone had been blowing up despite it's being 3 AM. A low curse word was muttered by you. It was being a shit week and now you couldn't even sleep. Problems at work were driving you mad already and to top all of it you and Jason had broken up.
You reached for your phone and saw Tim's contact on the screen, along with a few missed calls.
"Oh dear god..." you groaned, not so delighted to talk with your ex's family members. But it was 3 AM, you knew Tim would have a logical reason to call. So you called him back.
"Thank fucking god! I've been trying to reach to you!"
"Thank you for apologizing about ruining my sleep, Tim."
"Yeah, that. Look, I'm so sorry but it's important."
You sat up in the bed, confused and concerned.
"What happened?"
"Jason is... He had been shot. It was a close call."
You froze. Close call? He had never got a close call during your relationship. It terrified you, after all it was still a fresh breakup.
"Close...call?"
"He's okay now, though. His vitals are normal and he's awake from the surgery."
Sighing harshly, you rubbed your eyes. You wanted to smack Tim for giving you the news like this.
"For fuck's sake, Tim, couldn't you say that earlier?! And why the hell would you call me? What am I supposed to do?"
Tim paused on the other end of the line then huffed.
"He's still under the effects of anesthesia. He's asking for you."
"For me?"
"Yeah, he's not shutting up and I mean it. He just keeps repeating your name and tries to get out of the bed to see you. He tried to rip off the IV drip and I'm begging you, please come to put him to sleep or I will sedate him."
You couldn't help but snort a laugh. The truth was, you were ragingly worried. And he had been asking for you? You had a feeling that this breakup wasn't gonna last long.
"I'll be there in ten. Keep him busy."

When you walked into the medbay of the cave, you saw Tim sitting beside the cot and listening Jason's ramblings, a frown of boredom on his face.
"And did ya know... That Mary Shelly had to write Frankenstein under her... husband's name? Becuz they didn't let her..."
You chuckled. It was weird and interesting to see him like this, pouting and tossing around despite Tim's loud warnings to not to. And the fact that he had asked to see you first had your heart swelling.
"Literature ramblings, huh?"
Jason whipped his head towards you, his eyes glimmering at your sight. He had a huge bandage over his chest, you assumed that the shot was bad.
"Baby..." he called out, using the petname despite of the situation of your relationship. You walked closer to him and damn, he looked adorable with his eyes blown wide with affection.
"Hey there birdie. Your brother told me you were shot."
"'M as tough... as nails..." he slurred "A bullet can't take me down..."
You turned to Tim, trying not to laugh.
"What did you guys give him? He's out of his mind."
"It took more than a normal amount of anesthesia for your tank built boyfriend."
"'M not a tank I'm Jason..."
Sighing, you raked your fingers trough his hair. He was really, really adorable.
"Yes, you are Jason."
"And you came..." he giggled "Thank youu..."
"Don't mention it. You scared the shit out of me."
"Pshh! Didn't even hurt!.." he tried to turn on his injured side and Tim pushed him away firmly. You heard him mutter something and you leaned in a bit. Hamlet. He was fucking quoting Hamlet.
"Are you serious right now?"
"To be... Or not..."
You had to force yourself to not burst into a loud laughter. So you just brushed his bangs and smiled at him.
"Okay, birdie, I think you should get some sleep so Timmy can take a break from listening to Hamlet all night.
"I wish it was just Hamlet."
"Little Women is a masterpiece!.."
"Yeah, yeah. That's enough literature for tonight." Grabbing the covers, you pulled them onto him. He looked up at you and pouted. Fucking pouted.
"Leavin' already?.."
"I'll be waiting until you fall asleep, no worries."
"Stay. Please..."
"Jason, I can't-"
His pouting lower lip started trembling and he bursted into tears. You weren't sure if it was because of anesthesia or was he genuinely upset.
"Please, please... 'll be good, stay..."
Your heart broke into pieces in your chest. You just couldn't help yourself but reach and wipe his tears off of his bruised cheek.
"No, no, no. You were good, you were good to me, Jay. We just... We couldn't see eye to eye lately. That's okay." You tried to talk some sense into him despite his situation.
"Then I'll be better... Please."
Jason's eyelids were growing heavy as your gender hand combed through his hair and hushed him.
"Please... Love you..."
Giving in, you sat where Tim was sitting moments ago. His sobs died down slowly as sleep engulfed him and you couldn't help but sigh.
You watched him sleep peacefully, realizing how much you had missed this sight. Until you were jolted with a voice coming behind you.
"I wasn't expecting for you to come."
Bruce stood there, bags under his eyes giving away his fatigue and worry.
"He kept on asking for you again and again. I know you guys are not on the best terms but thank you. For coming to see him."
"Of course I would. My heart dropped when Tim called me and told me Jason was shot."
"Hm, I bet he didn't include the part that he was alive."
"He didn't."
"Mhm."
Both of you stared at each other in silence for a while as Jason's soft breathings filled the room. You weren't sure if you should be there or just leave already. And as much as you hated to accept, you had missed him.
"He misses you. A lot."
"I... I missed him too."
Bruce sighed softly and placed his hand on your shoulder with a supporting manner.
"I believe that you can make through this too. He loves you. And well, you're a wonderful partner."
"Am I really?"
"Pretty sure about that. You should rest a bit too. I can look after him."
"I want to stay."
You saw a faint smile on the older man's lips as he nods. And you knew he was right. Jason would be alright, you would make it alright. So you just rested your head on next to him on the cot.
*
"Fuck... My head..."
Jason could swear that his head was splitting into two for some reason. And something on his chest was so tight, a full bangade. He slowly became aware of the situation, he was shot. He had almost died.
"Hey."
What he wasn't expecting when he snapped his head to his side was you, sitting next to him and holding hid hand. His hand.
"Wait-"
"Hey, hey. Easy, don't rip your stitches you idiot."
He laid back down with a huff.
"Why are you here?"
"Well, Tim called me last night. He said you had been asking to see me. And you begged me to stay. So I did."
"Fucking anesthesia..." Jason groaned in embarrasment. His cheeks were tinted with pink.
"How many times did I tell you to not forget your bulletproof west in your suit? Huh?"
"Yeah, yeah. Quit scolding, I'm aware I never listen. That's why we broke up."
He flopped back on the pillow, regretting his words all of a sudden.
"Exactly. So maybe start listening to me from now on."
Looking up at you, he saw nothing but tenderness. You weren't joking, you weren't messing with him.
"You mean?.."
"I missed you too, Jay. A lot. Maybe we can try it again."
His smile afterwards was beaming. A genuine, beautiful smile.
"I love you."
"I love you too. And never scare me like that again."
"Fine, fine. But I'm pretty sure you had fun with my ass high on anesthesia."
"Let's say that Tim didn't."
Next an hour spent with you telling the details about his medicated state and him groaning and begging for someone to put that bullet back in his chest in a joking manner.
