Work Text:

It was a little under half a year since Shuichi and Kokichi had officially became a couple, which meant this was their first Christmas together. Shuichi had been a bit nervous at first, but Kaito had ended up giving him a slap on the back and saying that Kokichi would be happy with whatever he got him.

So, with that reassurance in mind, he quickly dressed himself and grabbed Kokichi’s (somewhat shoddily wrapped) present. They were planning to exchange gifts before heading to the party Kaede was throwing for their class.

When he opened his dorm’s door, Kokichi was already waiting outside. He wasted no time, that’s for sure.

“My beloved, I thought I was gonna be waiting for you foreeeever!” Kokichi dragged out the last word dramatically.

Shuichi rolled his eyes, a fond smile on his face. “All I had to do was get changed and do my makeup, it wasn’t that long.”

“You had to put on your emo eyeliner.” Kokichi said. “An~y~way, let me in, it’s present time!”

“In here? I thought you’d want to go somewhere else.”

“Why not? The place doesn’t matter.”

Shuichi shrugged at that, he supposed it was fair, and held the door open for Kokichi. The smaller boy immediately ran in and threw himself onto Shuichi’s bed, messing up his nice clothes.

“Now, what has my beloved Saihara-chan decided is a fitting gift for someone with as high a status as moi.” Kokichi definitely never was short on dramatics, that was for sure.

“I hope you like it.” Shuichi nervously handed Kokichi the box, who didn’t waste a second before ripping off the wrapping paper like an animal. Inside was a purple penguin plush wearing a checkered scarf which matched Kokichi’s own and a box of grape flavored soda candies.

“It’s perfect, Shuichi, thanks! That’s not a lie, by the way.” Kokichi wore a big grin when he saw his gift. It made Shuichi feel a bit embarrassed to be honest. “And here’s yours!”

Kokichi handed Shuichi a small box. He was a bit tempted to shake it and try to guess what was inside, but he just peeled off the wrapping paper instead. It seemed to be a jewelry box.

Shuichi carefully opened it and was met with a beautiful silver ring. It wasn't what he was expecting from Kokichi, but he still loved it.

“It’s great, thank you.” Shuichi knew he was blushing a bit, but he couldn’t help it.

“Nishishi, sounds like you accept then!” Kokichi was making that face he always made when messing with people.

“Accept what?”

“My marriage proposal, of course!” Kokichi said that so nonchalantly yet it completely flustered Shuichi.

“W-what?! We can’t get married, we aren’t even adults yet!”

“I know, that was a lie. I won’t propose to you til after we graduate.” Kokichi was still wearing his ‘mischief making’ face, but somehow Shuichi thought that he might be completely serious. Then again, he wasn’t opposed to them getting married in the future.

“Let’s just get going or we’ll be late.” Shuichi knew they weren’t running behind at all but he feared if this conversation continued he might die of embarrassment.

“Very well then.” Kokichi offered his hand to Shuichi like he was a fairytale prince. Shuichi slipped the gifted ring onto his finger before accepting.

The two walked hand in hand the short distance to the dining hall. There, almost all of their classmates were already partying. The room was covered in festive decorations and someone, probably Iruma, had somehow managed to set up a disco ball.

“Yo, bro! I thought you two might be later.” Kaito greeted Shuichi as he ran over.

“Hi Kaito. You look nice.”

“Thanks! You look pretty good yourself.”

Kokichi interrupted them. “Momota-chan, stop flirting with my boyfriend. Don’t you have to go make out with Maki Roll or something?”

“What?! I’m not flirting with him! I’m just saying he looks nice!” Kaito shouted, visibly flustered.

“Yeah yeah, sure. Anyways, Shumai, I need to go annoy Miu. Wanna come?”

Shuichi shook his head, “No, that’s fine. I’ll find you later once everyone starts eating.”

“Ok, bye-bye for now, Saihara-chan.” Kokichi pressed a quick peck on Shuichi’s cheek before running off.

“I still don’t get what you see in him.” Kaito grumbled. “Anyway, as I was saying, you look good. I like that ring, is it new?”

“Oh, yeah.” Shuichi blushed slightly, “Kokichi got it for me.”

“Huh, not at all what I expected from a guy like him. I woulda thought he’d get you some gag gift, but that? That thing looks expensive.” Kaito grimaced thinking of the price.

“I know. I’m starting to think that what I got him might not be enough.” Shuichi admitted.

“Bro, don’t worry about it. Actually…” Kaito hesitated for a moment. “Ouma came to talk to me a couple days ago. He was freaking out ‘cause he didn’t know what to get you. It kinda surprised me, but apparently he only asked me ‘cause we’re friends. I ended up telling him the same thing I told you; that’d you guys would be happy just getting anything from each other. I was kinda worried how he might take that but I guess it worked out.”

That surprised Shuichi quite a bit. Kokichi had acted confident about his present from the moment he arrived, but it was somewhat comforting to know they were having the same worries all along.

“Thanks for that Kaito. I didn’t realize he felt that way.”

“Yeah, that guy keeps throwing me for a loop. But you both seem happy so who am I to judge? Oh, anyway, Maki Roll and I were gonna—”

Shuichi zoned out a bit hearing Kaito start rambling about something or other. He could help but glance at Kokichi across the room, seemingly still bothering Iruma (and poor Kiibo who always got caught up in their nonsense.) The day had ended up going really well so far, and it seemed like there were no signs of it stopping.

Shuichi hoped this was just the first of many Christmases they could spend together.
