Summary
A snap, like the crack of a branch underfoot, rang out, followed by a low hum. The ground beneath him erupted in a pulse of green light, a shimmering circle of glyphs flaring to life around his paws. Yuma yelped, a guttural sound of pain and surprise, as an invisible force surged up his legs, pinning him in place. He thrashed, claws scraping at the soil, but the trap held firm, its glow intensifying with every desperate movement.
“Well, well,” the man said, his voice smooth and almost amused. In his hand, he held what looked like an orb of ivory and scarlet. “What do have we here?”
Yuma’s growl rumbled low in his throat, but it was all he could muster. The green glow of the trap burned against his fur, sapping his strength with every passing second. The man crouched just outside the circle, tilting his head as though inspecting a curious specimen.
“A dire wolf?” he mused, his lips curling into a smile.
With a flick of his wrist, the man raised his orb. The trap’s glow flared again, and Yuma’s vision swam. The last thing he saw before the darkness claimed him was the stranger’s sharp, calculating eyes, glinting like a predator who had just caught his prey.
