Something Dumb to Do

Summary:

It was a quiet night in the lair with only Casey and Donnie still awake.

Casey was simply lazing around boredly when he is suddenly struck with a brilliant way for him and his boyfriend to spend the rest of their night.

Story idea and title from the song: Marry You by Bruno Mars

Work Text:

It was a Tuesday night.

A late Tuesday night.

Casey had had a difficult day at work, nearly getting bulldozed by a truck as he made his pizza delivery being the worst of it. He slowly nursed the beer he stole from Raph's stash at the back of the fridge and stared at the TV with glassy eyes. He wasn't drunk- hell he was barely even buzzed- but he couldn't get himself to pay attention to the old Japanese anime playing on the screen.

He was slouched on one of the few bean bags in the lair, the room around him dark and quiet. It was just late enough that only people with the worst insomnia would still be awake. Hence why the only sound other than the characters softly speaking in Japanese on the TV was the clicking of Don's laptop as he worked on some project, really only sitting out in the living room with Casey to have some company.

Lulling his head back, Casey looked up at his boyfriend, pouting when Donnie didn't look back at him, too immersed in his laptop to sense his starring.

Casey could see the artificial blue light reflecting in Donnie's reddish-brown irises. His fingers moved across the keyboard without hesitation and Casey briefly wondered what it was the other was working on.

It could be just some work for his job, or even just some plans for one of his many unfinished projects. But, he knew Donnie couldn't help but continuously come up with new plans, new ideas, new projects. Anything his wonderful brain could think of. Casey truly believed that Donnie could build anything if given the right materials.

Despite the soothing sound of Donnie working and the nice dim lighting, Casey didn't feel tired. If anything, he felt bored.

He had the urge to go out and do something.

He wanted to do something fun. Maybe even a little crazy.

Despite his crappy day, it was still a pretty beautiful night when he had walked to the lair earlier.

"It's a nice night." He said quietly, breaking the silence.

"Hm?" Donnie questioned after a moment, pausing his typing to give Casey his attention.

Casey grinned and shifted in his spot to sit up.

"I said it's nice out tonight."

"Okay..." Donnie's eyes squinted just a bit as he observed him, clearly wondering what Casey was getting at. Casey found it adorable.

"I want to do something."

Donnie rolled his eyes, a fond smile creeping onto his face as he looked back to his screen, continuing his typing. "Then go do something," he sassed.

"I want to do something with you."

Donnie gave a sigh that Casey was all too familiar with. It was his "why-do-I-love-this-idiot-and-why-am-I-about-to-say-yes-to-whatever-stupid-thing-that-comes-out-of-his-mouth" sigh.

"Okay. What do you want to do?" Donnie asked, still typing away on his laptop.

"I think I want to marry you."

Donnie's fingers froze over his keyboard and his head whipped over to look at Casey so fast that Casey would have laughed if his heart didn't suddenly feel like it was trying to beat out of his chest. It was as if his brain had no idea his mouth was going to say that.

He didn't really know what compelled him to say it. He wasn't sure if it was the beautiful tapestry of color in Donnie's eyes or the beer warming in his hand, but now that he had said it... Casey wasn't sure that he had ever wanted to do anything more in his life.

"Very funny, Casey." Donnie muttered, turning back to his screen. The look on his face made Casey's heart sink and he quickly scrambled to get up, setting his beer down on the ground and moving to sit next to the other.

"I'm serious, Baby." Donnie looked at him with a raised brow and he continued. "I know this guy from work- he's like professionally ordained or something. He took some online test and everything. He always does stuff like this at this little chapel-arch thing down by the river. I've got the cash, I could just give him a call. We could have him turn away. We could go there and no one would see us. No one would even know."

With a huff, Donnie set his laptop on the other side of him and turned to face Casey. "Are you being serious right now? How many beers have you had?"

Casey gently takes one of Donnie's hands with both of his own. He looked up, into Donnie's eyes, their colors dark and deep in the dim lighting. The paycheck that he had forgotten to cash in earlier felt like it was burning a hole in his pocket. His hands probably felt clammy and his heart was still racing.

"C'mon Dee. I know this feels like this is coming out of nowhere but... you are the best thing to ever happen to me. I love you so much it hurts. I think that we could do this."

Casey watched as Donnie's jaw dropped open, struggling to form any words.

Casey waited in anxious anticipation.

"You're drunk," he said, his voice dripping with disbelief.

"I'm not." Casey squeezed Donnie's hand as he spoke, his voice firm.

Donnie floundered some more and under any other circumstances, if this were any other conversation, Casey would be making fun of him.

"What do you want me to say?" Donnie's perfect eyes were becoming glassy, his voice choked.

"Just say yes."

Casey watched as Donnie once again looked him over with a critical eye. He had once told Casey that talking to him was like trying to figure out an answer to one of the crazy equations he's always working on in his lab.

"Hey," Casey said after a moment, his stomach starting to feel swirly. "It's okay if you don't want to. Hell, if you wanted we could go out and do it and y'know, just be reckless- act like stupid teenagers again- and tomorrow if you change your mind, if you want to undo it or break up or whatever you want, that's okay too. I will always love you, no matter what."

Donnie worried his bottom lip between his teeth for a moment, looking away from Casey.

Casey felt his heart sink to his feet and carefully extracted his hands from Donnie's, preparing to scoot back and give the other space.

But- before he could fully pull away- Donnie was grabbing both of his hands and pulling him close again.

Casey quickly looked up to meet the other's eyes. They had this wonderful sparkle to them.

"Yes."

Casey felt his breath stutter in his chest. "Yes?" He whispered.

"Yes," Donnie grinned, "let's get married."

Casey couldn't help the grin that broke out on his face.

He then immediately pulled Donnie into a kiss who let out a small squeak of surprise.

By tomorrow, Casey would be kissing his husband.

edit: okay since some people apparently like this I shall leave this up. This story was kind of a test for me to see if I could handle writing one based on a song.
