Chapter 1

Summary:

“You’re supposed to be dead?”

Chapter Text

“What..?” This couldn’t be happening. No it had to be some type of nightmare. Right? There’s no way this is real. “Nothing… Not anything?”
“No. Who even are you?” She asked, still obviously shocked. I mean it’s probably just that she didn’t recognize me. After all, it's been 4 years. 4 years since the ‘Accident’.
“My name is Zara? Like your friend?” Max only looked more confused which only made me want to cry more.
“I’ve never had a friend named Zara…” She muttered looking down.

“Oh.” Honestly I just wanted to cry again so bad. I waited so long thinking she was dead, just to come back and forget everything. What does someone even do in this situation? Put a gun to their head? I guess I'll take her to see someone else. She obviously doesn’t remember me, maybe she’ll remember someone else.
“Well… You should see someone else,” I said, trying my best not to let my voice crack.
“Who? And why should I trust you?” Maxine stared at me.
“What else are you going to do?”
———
Yeah, I know, great idea, bring the girl with amnesia to her older brother's ex-girlfriend who also happens to be my sister. What could go wrong?
After about 10 sets of stairs we finally reached the Headmaster, my uncle's office. Riley was out for a few days so Keira and Alice were in charge of everything.
“Why are we here?” Max asked, holding my hand. She looked worried.
“To find someone.” I knocked on the door. Three times before it opened. There stood a blond blue eyed girl with pointed ears, wearing extremely distorted jeans and a Sabrina Carpenter T-shirt. Alice LeBlanc, the Time Element. Who just kind of stared at us for a while fidgeting with the necklace she wore that had our parent’s wedding rings on it.

“What… You're supposed to be… Your brother is going to kill me.” She stumbled before collecting herself and opening the door all the way. “Come inside.”
Without much choice Max and I followed. She sat down on the desk in the middle of the room while Maxine and I sat in the chairs.
“Now… If you don’t mind me asking. What happened? She’s supposed to be dead, Zara.” Well here we go. I looked over at Max, for being completely confused she was pretty cute.
“Honestly… she just appeared. I don’t know how or where I was just walking through… walking around the school and saw her.” I said. Alice stared at me more, she’s pretty threatening when she does this.
“So I’m supposed to believe-“ Max cut her off before she could finish.

“Who are you? Where are we even?” She asked.
“I’m your brother’s… My name’s Alice, I’m Zara’s older sister.” She paused, probably waiting for Max to respond, which she never did. “You have amnesia don’t you?” Max yet again never said anything out loud but silently nodded. Alice walked over to her and held her hands. Surprisingly Max let her.
“What’s the last thing you remember?” Her tone was a lot lighter than when she talked to me. They sat there like that for a minute or two before Maxine spoke up.
“Looking at the stars with someone and a boy talking to me. I can’t remember what they looked like though,” Max whispered.
Alice went back to her spot on the desk staring at the two of us.

“Tout ce dont elle se souvient, c'est de regarder les étoiles avec Zara et son frère…” She speaks in French when she’s worried or doesn’t want anyone hearing what she's saying. Only our Mother, Keira knows a bit of French and even that’s not enough to piece together what she's saying. I looked over at Max again. She was pretty, even more so now than before. Not like she wasn’t pretty.
“Zara.” I forgot she was there.
“Yes?” I could basically hear Alice regretting everything.

“Take Maxine to your dorm, she’ll stay there until we find a better place. Tell mother what’s going on, after all she’s the one who has to tell Riley when he gets back. And I’ll call her brother, if he even answers.” She exhaled. “Got it?”
I nodded.
What could possibly go wrong. Sharing a room with your somewhat ‘friend’ who doesn’t remember you for a while.
———
“Where are we?” Max was yet again holding onto my hand. We were standing at the front of my room. My bed was shoved against the left wall parallel to the window. On the same wall as the window there was a shelf with books and a collection of records and movies. There was a collection of posters and drawings next to the shelf too. I used to have to share it with Zikai but he got his own room last year.
“My room, or dorm. Doesnt matter to me.” I sat down on my bed. Max sat next to me looking out of the window. For the first time I actually looked at her. Her hair was longer, and she was taller than me by a few inches. Her curly chocolate brown hair was longer and her hazel eyes looked different though I couldn’t tell why. Her scar was still there She was wearing a black zip up sweater, purple crop top and a pair of light blue jeans.

“So… Where am I going to sleep?” Max asked, finally looking at me. That was a good question. I would feel bad if I got her to sleep on the floor but, I also want to sleep in my bed.
“I have no idea, what do you think?” I asked. Max thought for a minute.
“What if we share the bed?” She replied. My face was definitely hot. After all that’s the girl I had a crush on for like a year and the girl who I like now. Sharing a bed for who knows how long? There’s no way I could do that.
“Sure!” I‘ll probably regret saying that after two nights. But, I could always just sleep on the floor myself or turn into an animal if it came down to it.
“Also…” Max paused for a second, “Do you have a shower?”
“That way.” I said pointing to the door down the wall
