Chapter Text
Birds chirped in the morning sky, flying overhead as Amy stood and enjoyed the breeze. It seemed peaceful, scattered clouds moved across the sky forming shapes you could assign to something. One looked like a dolphin, another looked like a bunny. She smiled, and closed her eyes. Her mind was clear…
But all good things come to an end. She felt weightless, like she was floating. She gasped for air, her eyes unable to open. She strained, trying to open her eyes, she needed to open them. None of this was real, she just needed to open her eyes and see. Open them! Open them, dammit! ….
Everything slowed. Her eyes finally opened, and she looked around. She wasn’t looking at the morning sky anymore, she was in some kind of… space station? She put a foot forward, testing if she could move. She walked closer to the giant window, gently putting a hand on it. She stared out into the endless void of space. She could see Earth, and hundreds of stars shining in the abyss. Her eyes wandered, seeing the moon as well. It was weird… she didn’t realize just how beautiful the Earth was. Patches of green and blue, splotches of white and beige.
The soft patter of feet against a metal floor broke her from her trance. Her eyes glanced over to the side, where now a strangely familiar red and black hedgehog stood. He looked blurry though, almost as if he was an oil painting. His face looked smeared, the details muddy. As she looked at him, trying to visualize the details of his face in her mind, the scene changed.
She blinked and suddenly she was running, holding that same hedgehog's hand. Why were they running? What was going on? Her heart was racing as she looked around, trying to identify the threat. Her gaze made it behind her, where she saw multiple people chasing them with guns. She gasped, turning her head and continuing on.
She blinked once more and was now in a room, holding onto a giant lever. She looked up and saw the hedgehog in a capsule. He was… banging his fists on the glass. He was yelling something, but the glass muffled it. She stared back down at the lever, her brain going foggy. Was she… talking? She felt her lips move to form words but even her own voice was muffled. Her body moved on its own, preparing to pull the lever as tears welled up in her eyes. The door behind her slammed open, everything sounded muffled, she couldn't understand anything. What was happening? Why was she going through this? Why would they–
A loud piercing shot rang through the air, and pain radiated through her stomach. It buckled her knees and she collapsed to the ground, still clutching onto the lever. With the last bit of her strength, she pulled it…
The only sound that she heard clearly was the agonizing scream of her friend as her vision faded away.
She was back home now. Her eyes opened to the morning sky, like nothing happened. And nothing did happen, it was all in her head. Just something her mind came up with. She was fine. She took a deep breath in, telling herself that what she saw meant nothing. It all meant nothing… She shook her head and looked out into the distance. She needed to stop thinking about it, and how real it felt.
Out in the distance, a blue blur darted around, headed towards her over the terrain. Amy knew who it was, and she exhaled. A sense of relief washed over her, she would have a good distraction now. Sonic always brought some kind of trouble or chaos with him, something she never thought she’d crave as badly as she did. Sonic dashed to her, unraveling himself and stopping a few feet in front of her with a big grin.
“Hey Ames!” He spoke, waving as he did. Amy smiled back at him, “Hey Sonic.” She rested her hands on her hips, “Anything exciting happening?”
“Just the usual, Egghead was terrorizing a village with a new badnik and I put a stop to it.” The hedgehog smirks, placing his hands behind his head in faux relaxation.
“Again? He really doesn’t know when to give up, does he?”
“Eggman? Giving up? I don’t think he even knows what those words mean!”
“Good thing you’re always around to stop him, he’d probably have taken over the world by now if you weren’t here.”
Sonic looked down and chuckled, rubbing his nose. “I guess you’re right.” Amy rolled her eyes, giggling at his humility. She sighed, glancing around for a moment while she thought. After a few seconds, she spoke. “Hey, why don’t we hang out a bit? I have the stuff to make cupcakes back at home, we could bake them together!”
Sonic hummed, shrugging his shoulders. “Eh, why not. Eggman should be done for a while.”
“And it’s not like you have anything better to do, hm?”
Sonic feigned hurt, clutching his chest dramatically. “You wound me Amy…” She laughed, starting to walk towards her small home. “Come on, drama queen!” Sonic shook his head, smiling. He ran to catch up, now walking at her pace as they began chatting.
Once inside Amy’s home, she headed for the kitchen, motioning Sonic to follow. She grabbed two aprons, red and blue, handing the red to Sonic while she had the blue. She swiftly tied the apron around her, adjusting it for comfort.
“Have you ever baked before?” She glanced at Sonic, who was struggling to tie the apron on in the back. She chuckled, earning a pouty glare from the speedster. She motioned for him to turn around, and he did.
“No, it seems easy enough to do though. You just put stuff in a bowl and mix, right?” He said while she took the straps and tied them neatly to secure the apron on him. He adjusted it slightly, giving her a thumbs up after.
She shook her head, “Baking is way more than just mixing the ingredients! You have to measure them out correctly, mix them well, separate the batter evenly into the tray, put into the oven for a specific amount of-”
“I don’t need the full rundown, Ames. I got this!” Sonic interrupted, leaning onto the counter with his arms crossed and a cocky smile on his face.
Amy stared at him, “Alright. If you’re so confident, then how about you handle the wet ingredients? You need milk, eggs, sour cream, butter and vanilla extract.” She smiled and turned, beginning to grab the dry ingredients.
Sonic nodded, mainly to himself. He walked to the fridge, opening it and staring inside. He hesitated for a second, before grabbing a carton of milk and a carton of eggs. He set them on the counter next to the fridge, grabbing the other things Amy said he needed.
He closed the fridge door, staring at the items he had in front of him. He had them all except the vanilla, he couldn’t find it in the fridge, but he wasn’t sure how much of everything he needed. He looked around, seeing a cabinet with bowls in it. He walked to it and grabbed one, looking it over and deciding it was big enough. He then spent the next minute or so just staring at everything.
Amy noticed, and was holding back a snicker. She had already measured and whisked the dry ingredients, so she grabbed the paper the recipe was on and left it in a place where Sonic could easily find it before leaving to go to the bathroom. When she left, Sonic looked around trying to figure out what to do. He saw the recipe and grabbed it, exhaling in relief. He put it next to him and the bowl, attempting to measure out all the ingredients.
He grabbed a measuring cup and put in the milk, crouching to make sure it was the right amount. He poured it into the bowl, setting the cup down. He carefully measured the other components, putting them into the bowl and mixing them together at the end. He still didn’t know where the vanilla was, and began looking around for it.
Amy returned and grimaced at the mess Sonic had managed to make. “What are you looking for?” She asked, walking towards him searching a cabinet. He turned his head, “The vanilla stuff, it wasn’t in the fridge.” She sighed, opening another cabinet right next to them and grabbing the bottle of vanilla extract. He watched, sighing in disappointment at himself. “I swear I checked that cabinet…” She handed it to him and went to preheat the oven. Sonic mixed the vanilla in and set it aside. Amy motioned for him to bring his bowl over, and when he did she poured it into hers. She handed him a whisk and went to clean up a little.
He began whisking, “Geez, how do you mix this without tiring your arm out?” He asked, looking over at Amy.
“It’s not that hard.” She replied, filling the now empty bowl with water to soak in the sink. She wiped down the counter and took care of all the containers. She watched over Sonic’s whisking, giggling at him struggling a little bit. She shooed him away, taking over the whisking. She finished it up fast, pointing him over to the cupcake tray and papers.
She felt peace once more with Sonic as they baked, and hoped it would last longer than last time. Life had other plans, as Eggman was plotting off in the distance.
And this time, it would be the ultimate way to get rid of that blue rat...
