“Kids, get out of the building, out of London. We’re surrendering to GUN,” Tom’s voice spoke through Shadow’s earpiece. He turned his attention away from Gerald and spoke into his communicator.
“What? Why?” he barked.
“Sonic’s hurt, he needs medical attention now. We don’t have a choice.”
“Wait, you can’t do that,” Shadow breathed, his terror choking him. “You don’t know what they’ll do to him.”

“I didn’t know her, kid, so I might be wrong. I think growing up in her grandfather’s lab or in military bases would be pretty lonely. Then she met you. I think you gave her a whole lot of love she’d been missing, too.”
Shadow blinked up at Tom, stunned. He’d never considered himself a good thing in Maria’s life. Just as the wretched thing she took into her arms. Tom wasn’t wrong, though. Maria had been lonely before Shadow. She had no one except a grandfather who had no time for her. No parents, no siblings, no friends. No one to watch movies or do her nails with. She’d been so lonely, she saw an alien for the first time and wondered if this strange creature could finally be a friend to her.
He made her happy. For a little while, Shadow made her happy, too.
“You’re gonna be alright, kid,” Tom promised. “Someday, the love will overpower the pain. It always does.”
Tom left Shadow to his thoughts, and he stared up at the big, blue sky like he’d never seen it before.

“I like him a lot, Maddie,” Sonic confessed in a hushed, reverent tone. “I think I love him.”
“Yeah, I think you do, too,” she teased. “You should see the look on your face when you see him. You have it bad.”
“So it’s okay? That I love him?”
“It’s wonderful, Sonic. You’re good for each other. Whenever you’re ready to tell him, I think you’ll find he loves you, too. He looks at you the same way you look at him.”
Did Sonic do the same stars-in-his-eyes expression at Shadow that Shadow made towards him? Yeah, that sounded about right.
