Work Text:
It wasn’t that you were insecure.
No, you grew out of that phase when you hit your twenties, sure you sometimes felt that maybe having a more athletic body would advantage you in the career path you found yourself on, but life happens.
It also didn’t help that the ‘people’ that surrounded you were literally picture perfect but they were sketched to be that way.
Waking up in the D.C universe was jarring, especially for a marvel fan.
Waking up in Gotham was terrifying, as a detective.
Especially to you who were plus sized and female.
From the moment you woke up you discovered a few things about yourself, the past ‘you’ and the present you.
One was that you were close to Jim Gordon, in that he was impressed with your work as a detective and appreciated the fact you helped make his life easier by being one of the few competent people in the department ( not that the bar was high in that area). You managed to boost the level of camaraderie, with a bit of luck and a whole lot of knights spent studying you managed to become a decent detective.
Two, that you were naturally good with guns, this surprised you as you had never really handled a gun in your life before, but it sure helped in maintaining your cover and surviving in Gotham. Some practice with Gordon helped to make you an excellent shooter, aiding in not only getting more brownie points with the commissioner but also your general peace of mind. ( as someone living in Gotham)
Three, you were an orphan in this world, a fact that had you cashing in on some of your leave days to cry about because screw truck man, you loved your parents. It helped that you didn’t need to pretend to be someone's child but it hurt you to not be able to just run to the safety of your parents home when life became overwhelming.
Four, you now have a stalker problem in the shape of a family of bats thanks to the first two points.
The first time you noticed a member of the bat clan was when you bumped into Barbara Gordon near her fathers office, she was a pleasant enough girl, not really someone you could see yourself becoming close to, but a fine acquaintance nonetheless. The problem was who she was with, Richard ‘Call me Dick’ Grayson-Wayne. A young man who was in university, Nightwing was handsome both in and out of his mask that much you could admit.
As a casual fan of the DC universe you had no knowledge of Gotham, apart from some facts that were widely known so to find out some characters existed and some didn't was a bit of a shock to you but hey, less backstories to recall. The main characters you checked on were the Bats, the supes and og justice league heroes who existed in this multiverse. You felt… relieved because even though you could recall most facts about them, of course you needed to cross-check the information due to the entire characters not existing thing, but that was easy for you as a detective.
Dick was not a nuisance at first, still isn’t but his presence definitely lingered since that first run in near the commissioners office.
The first time you noticed the stalking was well after you met his siblings and father, both in and out of costume in a series of events that were both highly entertaining and dangerous ( Guns, birthday cake and trauma was involved), a package was what tipped you off. An unassuming container with clothes from your favourite clothing brand, things you didn’t order or pay for but were both to your taste and size.
“Well, lucky me I guess?”
