The dull ache in Charlie's back was drowned out by the weight pressed against her chest and her shoulder. The dragon egg resting in her arms while Zaris head and arms took up space on and around her shoulder and waist. Charlie's arms at an awkward angle to accommodate them both.
It was unfair how cute Zari looked wrapped around her, sleepy. She was just tired enough that she would let her cuddly side out. Charlie can already imagine Zari doing that throat clearing thing she does when she wakes up, aware enough to be slightly embarrassed.
The legends had back to back missions of more magical creatures seemlying getting more difficult to figure out how to handle. Finally after the last one, chasing a trickster gnome. The legends had come back to the waverider and their separate rooms to collapse from exhaustion. Charlie had decided to QB this time to keep an eye on the egg.
It was times like this Charlie can almost imagine settling down in one place, just her and a family. But Charlie had done that before, way before the legends and way before she was even “herself”.
Some beautiful hard working farmer in her heart. A house built poorly but with love and a kid with her smile. She left one day to travel and when she came back the whole village had been slaughtered, with her sister Atropos at the center of it all. Holding her husband and child cut threads, mocking her for not knowing how easy it was to find her because “it was easy to sense demigods” while looking at Charlie's daughters cut thread in disgust. She didn't try to run again for a long time.
It was definitely a mistake getting this comfortable again….
or just maybe sometimes a family is a sarcastic hacker from the future, an ancient Greek fate, a dragon egg and a bunch of queer D-list time traveling superheroes.
“Hey Z, what do you think about the name Charlie jr?”
“No.” Zari simply replies without even opening her eyes.
“Zari jr then? I always knew you were more vain than you let on.” Charlie jokes, gripping the egg slightly tighter in her arms.
A light pinch to her side is all the response she gets pulling a laugh out of her lungs.
“We should move to the bed ya know?”
“Move and I'll kill you.” Zari replies, wrapping her arms tighter around her, trying to bury her head into Charlie's shoulder to get more comfortable.
Jokes on her, Charlie wanted to get cuddled to death.
She leans back closing her eyes and tries to drift off for a little while
