Chapter Text
“So, wait,” Haruki put his hands up, taking a breath while processing what he just heard. “The HPSC wants to send the U.A hero course students to quote-unquote ‘intern’ under us?”
Doppo nodded from where he was standing next to the whiteboard, a projection of a badly made powerpoint presentation on the U.A students of the first year hero course on it. The older blond looked as equally tired and annoyed as the rest of them were.
“After the shitshow that is their training camp?” Again, Doppo nodded. “After, oh I don’t know, almost destroying the entirety of Kamino ward??”
Doppo nodded again. Haruki let his head fall onto the meeting table with a dull ‘thud’.
“After all the shit they’ve pulled, you would’ve thought they’d have the decency to never step foot into Yokohama again,” Jun’ichiro said from beside Haruki, flipping through the files in his hands.
“Apparently, this is their attempt for a truce from the HPSC,” Atsushi looked up from another file he was reading. “Something about regaining the Yokohama’s citizen’s trust in heroes,”
“They should’ve sent actual pro-heroes than literal children then,” Kyouka said, voice as monotone as ever. Akiko snorted. “God knows what goes through their minds,” The doctor said without a care, not even reading any of the files strewn on the table.
“We literally got it handled, though. Kamino, I mean,” Kenji piped up, “We even already evacuated the civilians in the ward and was about to strike ourself when they showed up,”
“It’s kinda funny seeing them scramble around in panic looking for civilians trapped under the rubble without knowing we already got them all cleared out,” Haruki tilted his head on the table, looking at his coworkers. “I think I would rather they send a gratitude parcel for making their job easier back then instead of a bunch of children,”
Doppo tapped the whiteboard with a marker a couple of times, gaining their attention. “No matter how much you complain, we can’t exactly refuse them either,” He pinched the bridge of his nose. “Damned rat with his damned favours,”
“I still want to know how Nedzu managed to gain a favor with shachou,” Jun’ichiro wondered aloud. “Even with the rat’s reputation, I doubt shachou would’ve fallen for his tricks-”
The meeting room door slammed open, and came in Osamu in all his wet bandaged glory, looking way too smug of himself, with a very exasperated and equally soaked Naomi trailing behind him.
“Found the suicidal freak,” Naomi deadpanned, before falling into a chair next to Jun’ichiro and letting her head fall onto the table with a wet ‘plop’. Jun’ichiro started fretting over her while Kyouka went up to get a towel from somewhere.
“Hello my dearest coworkers~! I bet all of you missed me-”
“Oh you missed a lot that’s for sure,” Ranpo spoke up for the first time in a while, pausing the game he was playing on a console. He took a candy from the packet sitting in front of him and threw it into his mouth.
“Hm?” With a faux-confused smile on his face, he glanced around the room, his eyes falling onto the projection on the whiteboard, and promptly stepped back out. With a grumble, Doppo stomped out to grab the running away Osamu by the scruff before dragging him back in.
“If we’re doing this, so are you,” Doppo said, forcing Osamu to sit on a chair before walking back to the front. Ranpo offered him a piece of candy. Kenji snatched it out of his hand and ate it himself.
“Right, well. I think we're pretty much discussed everything. Even with the U.A students coming here, it’s probably impossible for all of us to take care of them with the flood of cases we’ve been getting since the Kamino incident. So, Jun’ichiro, Atsushi, Haruki, Naomi, Kyouka, and Kenji, do you guys mind taking care of all these while the rest of us work on the normal cases?”
The addressed people nodded with little enthusiasm, and Doppo clapped his hands. “Alright, that settles it. We’ll probably have another meeting or two to discuss accommodations and arrangements for the U.A students, but for now, we're dismissed!”
One by one the older detectives left the meeting room, leaving the younger ones to gather the file folders and dealing with the headaches that were about to come.
“Hey, Haruki -kun?” Jun’ichiro tapped Haruki’s shoulder on their way out, hands full with files. “Hm?” Haruki hummed, looking up from his phone.
“Don’t your younger brother go to U.A?” The ginger asked. Haruki nodded. “Yeah, he does. He goes to the general course though; he didn’t pass the practical exam for the hero course,” He messed up his dyed blond hair in frustration. “The practical exam was biased for students with powerful and flashy quirks,”
Jun’ichiro huffed. “Of course it is,”
“How’s Kafka by the way?” Naomi suddenly asked, popping up from beside Jun’ichiro. He yelped, before playfully whacking Naomi’s head who stuck out her tongue at her older brother.
“He’s doing fine last time I checked,” Haruki answered, “Been settling well in his new dorm. Natori- san has apparently bought him the new novel from his favorite book series as a gift,”
Haruki went to his desk, putting down the file folders for him to check over later. He looked at the time, noting that it was lunch time already.
Grabbing his phone, he dialled a familiar number.
“Nedzu, are you fucking serious?! Yokohama?!” Shota slammed the meeting table. Some of the U.A staff present winced at the sound, but Shota didn’t pay them any mind.
“I’m not going to send my class to Yokohama! Are you out of your mind!” Shota bristled.
“Shota -kun , calm down.” Nedzu said, “I also do not want to send my students to the infamous crime-filled quirkless city, but this is a direct order from The HPSC,”
“Hero commision be damned! This is our students’ lives on the line!” Sekijiro growled.
“Gentlemen, again, calm down.” Nedzu said with a cold glare, and the glare is enough to send the two teachers back onto their seats.
“As I said, there is not much I can do due to this being a direct order from the higher ups. I’ve gotten quite lucky that I even got a say in this, even though I couldn’t exactly say no. I even managed to pull in a favor from an old friend to make sure our students are guaranteed safety while in Yokohama,” The rat-bear-dog thing sipped on his tea that has definitely gone cold.
“And besides, this isn’t just about a random field trip,”
The lights in the meeting room dimmed out. The projector turned on and on it was a man who looked to be in his mid-forties. He has long gray hair, metallic blue eyes, and wore a green yukata under a black haori. Beside his photo is a list of what seems to be his profile.
“Fukuzawa Yukichi, forty-five years old, founder and president of the Armed Detective Agency. Also an old friend of mine that I just mentioned,” Nedzu chuckled. “Quite an impressive man he is. I would have to apologize to him after all of this is over and done,” He clicked on a remote.
The screen changed, and on it were ten photos of different people. Four of them were adults, maybe even still in their early twenties, while the rest were clearly young, some even too young.
Nedzu cleared his throat. “These ten are all of the core members of the Armed Detective Agency. They all have different and important roles within the agency,”
Silence fell.
“But, Nedzu, it seems like the other six are…children..?” Toshinori asked.
“Yes, they are,” Nedzu replied.
A growing horror started to grow in Shota’s gut.
“Now, Shota-kun, Sekijiro-kun.” Shota looked at Nedzu. “I have a special assignment for the first years of the hero course,”
Kafka frowned.
“I’m sorry- Yokohama?” Shinsou asked from beside him. Aizawa nodded.
“The two first years hero classes A and B has been informed, and all of them are going. Since you guys are well on your way to transfer, we thought that letting you guys come would be a good additional training,”
“Didn’t the heroes almost destroy the Kamino ward?” Kafka bluntly asked, remembering all those times his older brother had complained about the paperwork the Kamino incident gave the agency. “Us going there would surely make everything worse,”
“This is an attempt at a truce,” Aizawa explained. “You guys would be interning under the Armed Detective Agency, a private detective agency specialising in cases the police couldn’t handle,”
Kafka glanced at Shinsou, who glanced back at him. Shinsou raised an eyebrow. Kafka shrugged.
Kafka looked back at Aizawa. “There’s something more than just interning is there?”
Aizawa hummed, proud if the grin hidden in his capture scarf was anything to go by. “Want to take a guess?”
“An attempt at a truce…except, there’s no way the HPSC would do that,” Shinsou rested a finger underneath his chin. “...the agency we’re interning at, the Armed Detective Agency right?”
Aizawa nodded. Shinsou frowned. “The A.D.A is a private detective agency specialising in cases most police and heroes couldn’t handle. I heard the core agents are ability users…?” Shinsou trailed off hesitantly. Again, Aizawa nodded.
“You know quite a lot,”
“Half of the underground feared them. You said it yourself,” Shinsou shrugged, an attempt at nonchalant.
Kafka shoved his hands into his pockets, looking at his shoes in thought. Nii-chan probably isn’t too happy about this, Kafka thought with a snicker. I kinda want to surprise him by going there.
Why risk sending literal heroes-in-training to a supposedly dangerous place though… Of course, Kafka doesn’t believe the A.D.A or Yokohama as a whole is a dangerous place. He was born there, and his older brother works at said A.D.A. Hell, he visited the city at least twice a month to visit his brother and his coworkers. But surely that was not what the HPSC thought…
Kafka abruptly looked up, glaring sharply at Aizawa. “The HPSC wanted us to gather information on the ability users working in the A.D.A.”
Aizawa’s hidden grin widened. “Three minutes. Clear, short, and the deduction was almost on point. You ought to learn a thing or two from Murakami, Shinsou,”
“His older brother is a detective, of course he’d be able to do that,” Shinsou grumbled. Kafka grinned cheekily and lightly shoved the purple-haired boy’s arm.
Aizawa’s eyebrow rose in question. “I didn’t know your older brother is a detective, Murakami. What’s his name? Maybe I knew him from the police force,”
Kafka waved him off. “Nah. You won’t know him. He works at a private agency,” Aizawa stared at him for a moment longer, before sighing.
“Well, Murakami’s deduction was almost correct. Yes, the HPSC wants you guys to gather information. But it’s not only on the ability users working in the A.D.A, but possibly other ability users in Yokohama as well. The ‘interning under the A.D.A’ was a cover so as to not draw suspicion from local Yokohama civilians and the ability users you’re targeting.”
“Wow,” Shinsou huffed. “Might as well investigate the entirety of Yokohama- what’s next, Teyvat Academy?” He sarcastically said, crossing his arms.
“Allogenes are a different matter,” Aizawa said, “Please don’t give Nedzu any ideas. I’m already suffering with arranging your field trip to Yokohama,”
Both Kafka and Shinsou simultaneously looked up at where they knew the security camera was located. Kafka grinned and waved at the camera. The camera wiggled back and forth in response. Shinsou cackled as Aizawa let out another deep, heavy, sigh.
“I’ll give you the details after school, so come to the teacher’s lounge. Now, get back to class you brats,”
