Ch 22- After having the peace of death ripped away from him and crawling out of his grave, Jason felt like one of those stray dogs that wandered his street growing up, starving and desperate and snapping at the world. He was supposed to be dead and then he wasn’t, and no one would give him a reason why.
So Talia gave him one: Shepherd the good and slaughter the bad.
Her versions of good and bad were wildly different than his, but the statement stood strong. Jason’s second chance was forced upon him. She told him to wring it out for all it was worth.
Jason had spent the last several years trying to do just that. He tried to balance his give with his take. He felt like he was making a difference, if not a small one, on his little corner of the world. It gave him purpose.
His body was a weapon and a tool, and it served him and his purpose well. It took years to grow into it and even longer to appreciate it, not for it's looks but for what it allowed him do. An ugly hilt could still hold a sharp sword.
But Jason’s being was a cosmic abnormality. He should be dead, he was dead, and then he wasn’t. He was he was kicked out of Heaven, put back together wrong, and made into something bad, and people could tell. His mere presence made the hair on the back of people’s necks stand up.
He didn’t have to do anything to make that cashier nervous. Jason didn’t threaten him or show a weapon, he just stood there.
It stung at the dead kid in him who wanted to be good and trustworthy, who wanted to be Robin.
But he had learned to live with it. Brush it off. Use it to his advantage.
His body was a tool and it served him well, and for that he could appreciate it. - ch 22
