Work Text:

Jinx woke up screaming again.

“Powder?”

A hand tried to wrap around her. She shoved her attacker back, hearing a dull thud. It took her a second to realize where she was and that she’d pushed Ekko off the bed and onto the floor.

“Ow,” he said, getting up carefully.

Oh shit, oh shit, I hurt him. I hurt him and now he’ll hate me and he’ll leave me and I ruined everything and I always ruin everything and I’m a fucking Jinx and—

She smashed her head against the wall. The sharp pain cleared her head and sent her shrieking thoughts to a sudden halt.

“Uh-oh,” she muttered.

Her hand automatically went to her head and came away damp and red. Well, shit. That had been a stupid thing to do. She looked over at Ekko, guilty.

“I’m sorry.”

He sighed.

“Don’t apologize. Let me see it.”

She turned around, trying not to flinch, and he parted her blue hair with his hands. Damn it, now she’s probably going to end up in the infirmary. All over a stupid dream she couldn’t even remember.

“It doesn’t look too bad,” Ekko said. “But you should still get it checked out.”

Called it.

“I can go myself,” she said. “You should get some sleep. I shouldn’t have woken you.”

Ekko scoffed.

“Sure. Leaving you alone right now sounds like a great idea.”

“I didn’t mean to—“

“You never do.”

“I’m sorry,” she repeated.

“Hey,” he said, grabbing her chin and forcing her to look him in the eye. “This is not your fault. You’re just…sick. You shouldn’t be apologizing or worrying about me when you’re the one bleeding.”

“Okay,” she said, trying to pull away, but Ekko didn’t let her.

“Say it. Say it’s not your fault.”

“You have a very aggressive way of getting me to be nice to myself.”

“Jinx.”

“Fine,” she said. “It’s not my fault I banged up my head like an idiot.”

He sighed, letting go of her chin.

“I’ll take it. But let’s cut the idiot next time.”

“Quit telling me what to do,” she grumbled.

“Quit beating up my wife.”

“I’m trying.”

“Try harder.”

“Wow, super supportive there,” Jinx said. “I hate you so much.”

“Mutual baby,” Ekko said, giving her a quick kiss. “Now let’s make sure you don’t have another concussion.”
