Work Text:
The rhythmic humming of the bus does nothing to soothe the uneasiness that has taken up space in Charlie's stomach. Though the feeling had always been there, ever since she had destroyed the loom all those years ago. When she was younger, never a child but younger. And it had been growing ever since she felt the loom pieces were all back on this earth.
A movement from the corner of her eye draws her attention. It's Zari moving to occupy the seat next to her.
She's bundled up in some tweed jacket and thicker pants than the party dress she had on earlier. Head covered in some cute hat and a scarf wrapped neatly around her neck, feet covered by more sensible shoes now. The outfit was so not something she'd wear around the ship but the little details made it uniquely her.
“John's having his Hamlet woe is me monologue back there.”
“Oh, it must be Tuesday then.” Charlie jokes back, turning her gaze back to the window.
She shifts a little trying to settle into having this new company and just when she's starting to
“It's dreary.”
“Hmm?” Charlie questions resigning to the fact that her current companion is chatty. Not that she minds, Zari is better company than the chewed gum sticking to the underside of her seat.
“I mean it's so foggy out here, I'm not sure how Mick can even drive in all this.”
“You should see every other day around here,it's foggy AND it's rainy.”
“How quaint.” Zari replies with sarcastic cheerfulness.
Charlie's lips twitch into a small smile.
“Though there's nothing quite like the nightlife in London. The bars, the shops and the restaurants.”
“The food it's actually a point against it.”
Charlie raises an eyebrow at the women. Zari shrugs
“I'm just saying, I traveled there in the future and the food was never really anything to write home about soooo.”
“The trick to getting good food in the UK is to know the right places to go. The multicultural restaurants are where it's at. Hell, I could show you the best places if we were back in the 70's.”
“Is that so? I could be down for that. Though I bet I could show you better places in 2044 New York.”
“Is that so?” Charlie parrots back. “Guess I'll have to take you up on that.”
“It's a date then.”
Charlie turns and watches as a perfectly manicured eyebrow raises, waiting for a response. It's an invitation, to finally take a shot at this thing her and Zari had been dancing around with flirty remarks and quick glances. Or to simply play it off, go back to their status quo.
Charlie doesn't believe any of them will make it out of this mission alive but Charlie also didn't think the legends would make it this far against her sisters, maybe, just maybe there's hope. Or maybe it's the smile Zari is throwing her way that fills her with that feeling.
Charlie can feel herself smile for the first time today
“It's a date.”
