Summary:

"The always singe inducing air of hell has nothing of the heat of the embarrassment that prickles at Astra skin right now as she (literally) lays her soul bare for Spooner right now."

Gay people say I love in weird ways

For Femslash February 2025 Day: 12

Notes:

Is this a loose interpretation of the prompt? I guess so. Also my first attempt at writing esperastra. Don't think I quite got their voices/dynamic the way I wanted but no harm in trying

Work Text:

Astra watches and feels the coin as she twirls it between her fingers. Her other hand starts to get that tingling feeling right before it goes to sleep as her head rests on it.

She was in the kitchen, it was empty. The other legends were off in their separate rooms, packing their things. She had already packed her things the day before, in disorganized anger.

It was finale. They were forced into retirement. No one really fought against it that hard, especially Spooner. Astra lets out a deep sigh as she sits up straight.

“That's a big sigh. Are you also having trouble figuring out how you're going to move all your stuff too?”

It's Spooner, sauntering into the kitchen. A small amount of amusement tickles in Astras mind as she thinks about how she nailed Spooner's walk not too long ago.

“I didn't realize you had so much stuff, your majesty.”

Spooner scoffs at the playful jibe thrown their way.

“Well I have more than I came here with.”

It's true, Astra was the same. It's crazy just how much she had to call her own after her few years with legends now.

Astra twirls the coin in her hand, absentmindedly.

“What's that?”

Spooner voices takes Astra out of her musings. Astra follows Spooner’s gaze to where it's focused on Astra's hand, more specifically the coin in it. She instinctively grips it tighter. She could calm up and keep it to herself. But is that really how she wants one of their last memories on the ship together to go?

“It's my soul coin.”

As the confusion passes over their features Astra remembered they had no extended knowledge or experience with this hell stuff like she did.

“All humans have these, but in hell it's basically a bargaining chip, whoever owns it. Owns you.”

She watches as Spooner almost cringes at the info. If it's from the info itself or if it's from the bluntness of the words, she can't tell.

Spooner shifts, awkwardly. An anxious movement like they were considering if they wanted to speak their next words

“I don't pretend to get or understand all the hell stuff but I know you are incredibly strong having gone through it.”

Strong? It was less about being strong and more about it being the only means of survival. But Astra could tell Spooner didn't mean it in a patronizing way. Spooner always said things so matter of factly, you always knew where you stood with them. It was always just easy with them.

Astra decides what she wants to do right then.

“Here.” Astra says as she extends the coin in her now open hand towards Spooner.

Spooner looks squigged out by the offer

“After what you just said about that thing? And how you fought to get it back. Why would you offer it to me?”

Spooner makes an excellent point. Why was Astra offering it to them? She rolls ideas and feelings around in her head before she settles on one that fits in the missing piece of her sentence like a puzzle.

“This is the first I've gotten to choose what happens to my life and my soul. Keep it, to remind you that you're one of the only people I trust.”

The always singe inducing air of hell has nothing of the heat of the embarrassment that prickles at Astra skin right now as she (literally) lays her soul bare for Spooner right now.

“Astra.” Spooner sighs her name out like she gave them puppy dog eyes they just couldn't resist.

They take it from her hand.

“Just so you know I am NOT keeping it because I'm going to see you again.” Spooner closes the distance to whisper it in Astras ear so evil Gideon doesn't over hear.

If Astra is being honest she doesn't care if she never gets it back, as long as it's Spooner that has it.
